Local filmmaker frenzy in the Bayou City

Two cool film-related blurbs for our 13 gentle readers:

Houstonian Robbie Pickering is trying to get his film made as part of the Netflix Find Your Voice film competition. (We know that link says he's from Austin, but trust us.)

Pickering has made it through several rounds of the competition and his film "Natural Selection" is now one of six finalists. If picked as the winner, Pickering will get a $350,000 prize package, half of which is a production grant to help get the movie made. Sexy Josh Brolin is a judge, which was more than enough to get us to vote.

You can view the trailer for the film here.

In tangentially-related news, Donald Kilgore, also a Houstonian, had a video featured on the front page of Vimeo earlier this month, garnering lots of attention and comments. The short documentary is about a man...

"who lives on the streets downtown and makes flowers out of napkins and other paper garbage that he finds, in the video he sings a short song that tells his story."

Paper Flowers & A Little Patience from Donald Kilgore on Vimeo.

The video-sharing website is a higher-rent version of YouTube that focuses more on original-content videos as opposed to bootlegged films and TV show clips.
