For the weekend of August 27th - 30th
Good afternoon, fellow Houstonites, and welcome to yet another H-Town Rock. The week may have started off light, but there is plenty afoot in the music scene this weekend, so get out that calendar and mark down some shows.
If you didn't get your fill of 80s girl-rock at the Blondie / Pat Benatar show, make sure to catch Heart tonight at Arena Theatre [our dear father would be there, but he's tied up with work all weekend]. One of Houston's top pop songwriters, Arthur Yoria is playing at Artcetera, Jody Seabody & The Whirls have a tour kickoff at The Mink, Springfield Riots has a free show at Boondocks, and there's a crazy rooftop show at 2808 Milam that we just might have to see.
Friday night Austin DJ Car Stereo Wars will be popping by Boondocks, and Black Congress drops a new 7" at Rudyard's. Houston noise will be plentiful at Super Happy Fun Land, While You Were Gone unleashes their new CD out in the boonies, and punk legends The Melvins will be playing not one, but TWO sets at The Meridian.
Saturday is host to Rad Rich's bash, an all day event which will consume both Avant Garden and Mango's. We're going to make sure we start the day off right by catching Elaine Greer at Cactus Music and sipping on some bubbly St. Arnold's. Houstonist strongly recommends making it to Mango's for what will be the final show by The McKenzies [and likely The Tontons final show of the year as frontwoman Asli Omar goes off to New York for school]. Plus, Fat Tony is performing, so we know it'll be worth it.
Sunday - ah what the hell - we'll drive out to the far north and sit on the grass for Depeche Mode, who happen to have indie heartthrobs Peter, Bjorn & John in tow. Not that we're going to drop the money for a ticket, we'll just sit outside and listen. Houstonist is broke, y'all, so feel free to buy us a beer if you see us out and about this weekend.
As always, we'd love to hear where you'll be found, so put it in the comments.
