H-Town Rock

dinosaurjr.jpg For the Weekend of October 22nd - 25th, 2009

Come one, come all! Behold that which Houstonist presents to readers everywhere upon this fine day: a bevy of music of which to partake this weekend, all of it guaranteed to be lute and lyre-free.

We've got a lot on the calendar this weekend, so in the interest of being thrifty we'll opt for the free route on Thursday: Blaggards at Discovery Green followed by Tyagaraja at The Continental Club. Trust us, the bones you'll save on admission are better spent elsewhere.

Friday we'll run by Cactus to grab a couple drinks and catch 2 Tons of Steel - remember, it's a full calendar so every penny counts towards other shows. Among the many things we'd like to catch are Brian Regan, who will bring the proverbial ha-has, and Mat Kearney's Nashville sound. We'd love to put our dead presidents to full use by getting some Dinosaur Jr. tickets [make sure you take some ear plugs if you're fortunate enough to attend - or just plan on not hearing for a week], but we'll be at Dean's all night. Hopefully we'll get to sneak next door and catch Indian Jewelry at Notsuoh, too.

Saturday's Who Still Cares About RadioFest, erm, Buzzfest actually features an interesting headliner, but really just confirms that which Houstonist already new: 94.5 does not play "new" music. Derek Webb brings his Black Eye tour to town; tonight's laffs come courtesy of Demetri Martin - a worthy reason to empty that pocketbook if Houstonist ever saw one, and we'll choose to avoid the Lilith Fair holdouts and tweens at The Meridian. You see, Saturday is really all about two events: The Foam Raiser at The Orange Show, which features Grandfather Child, Wild Moccasins, and some special beer, and Big Star Bar hosting the final appearance of GTRS as a local band. Houstonist plans on attending both, camera in hand, but if it's any added incentive for you we hear there will be an "adult-themed" piñata at Big Star. Oh, and it's free.

Finally, we'll close out the weekend with a stop at The Continental Club to take in some honky tonk before we head over to The Meridian for Orange County rockers Project 86 and the ever-conceptual Showbread.

Phew! Houstonist is tired just typing that. Hopefully we'll see you out and about this weekend. Give us a heads up on where to find you, Houston.
