For the weekend of November 27th - 29th, 2009
Phew! Forgive us for taking yesterday off, but Houstonist was busy with all of our Turkey Day endeavors. After a day full of tryptophan and football, we're ready to switch to booze and concerts. There are plenty of shows going on this weekend, so get out there and partake of the musical feast.
Tonight is especially packed, and if we get brave enough to leave the house before 6 pm we'll wind up at Cactus for the in-store James McMurtry performance. We'll leave some room for non-turkey dinner [we just can't touch leftovers until Saturday] and then spend our evening at the corner of Westheimer & Taft for a pair of great local shows. The Tontons are playing at Avant Garden, and we're willing to bet it'll be one of the few shows they play before Asli leaves for New York. Ben Wesley's Basses Loaded will be playing a farewell gig next door at Mango's, and the supporting lineups at both venues look pretty sweet.
Saturday, post-turkey sandwich lunch, we'll head over to Cactus to catch Spain Colored Orange and down a couple beverages from our dear Saint Arnold. We could go see a Danzig-less Misfits at House of Blues, but that'd be like watching Braveheart sans Mel Gibson - potentially entertaining but lacking the star power. There's a great local rock/hardcore show at Fitzgerald's [for a change] and we plan to go scope out Cavernous again because they melted faces at Block Party.
Houstonist refuses to believe in Christmas until December, so we'll pass on Mannheim Steamroller Sunday night. We'll either be caught honky-tonking, dancing off that deep fried turkey - or you'll find us at 2808 Milam, head-bobbing to the latest of Lance Higdon's Resonant Internal Sound Series.
