H-Town Rock

goldsounds.jpg For the weekend of February 11th - 14th

Another weekend, another teeming list of shows - it's how it goes here at Houstonist. Whether you're taking that specifal someone out on the town or going stag, we've got you covered.

Tonight is the tougher pick on the calendar - nothing screams outright for our soul to be there. Seeing as the Olympics just started in Vancouver [hear us out, it'll make sense], however, and coupling that with our appreciation for introspective folk, we'll be at Super Happy Fun Land. What's the logic? Well, Johnnie 99 makes some pretty, melodic folk tunes - oh and she's from Vancouver.

Friday we'll have no such problem. Our immediate pick, and it should be yours as well, is The Gold Sounds CD Release at Walter's on Washington. Not only do these Deer Park fellers craft solid all out rockers à la BRMC, but also the supporting cast is pretty swell. We'll suppose we can understand if you've already shelled out the thirty-five bones to see the Doggfather at House of Blues, however. If for some reason neither of those shows compels you [seriously, go see The Gold Sounds!], Mango's has a really good lineup featuring The Eastern Sea, listen listen, and Peter & The Wolf. Also of note: pale funnyman Jim Gaffigan will be at Verizon Wireless.

Start your Saturday music off right with a cold Saint Arnold brew and an in-store appearance at Cactus from - that's right - The Gold Sounds. Houstonist sat down with them yesterday and they informed us it'll be a more stripped-down set, so we'll be there as our curiousity gets the better of us. For those of you who can appreciate some left-of-the-dial tunes, head to The Mink for a Balaclavas release show [our friend describes it as listening to The Stooges while doped up on lean] that features notable Houstonians Indian Jewelry. There's a good show at Notsuoh featuring The Cocker Spaniels sleek & smart indie rock, as well as Los Skarnales at Fitzgerald's, Spain Colored Orange at Rudyard's, and a welcome rare appearance by Flamin' Hellcats at Continental Club.

How do you top off a weekend such as this? For the bizarre, head to Super Happy Fun Land. For a dose of aw shucks, head to Mucky Duck. For some skankin' [no, not skanks silly], head to Warehouse Live for The English Beat. Pro tip: if you're looking for some inspirational get down music, catch Houston Funk Factory at Continental Club. We'll be making the trek north, slumming it at Trash Bar whilst watching the epic White Rhino.

Now get out there and see some music!
