Arts & Events: October 2009 Archives
For the weekend of October 29th - November 1st, 2009 Still haven't figured out what you're doing this weekend? Maybe that costume has been harder to pull together than you thought? Or perchance this year you just haven't gotten invited to any of the cool parties? Never fear, Houstonist is here with a full calendar of music for your weekend.
The Cultured Cocktails series at Boheme tonight features the little opera house that could, Opera in the Heights. Last year the company's home, Lambert Hall, was severely damaged by Hurricane Ike, forcing the cancellation of the opening performances of the season. This year they are back at Lambert Hall with an exciting season, including audience favorite "La Boheme".
Aww, have you been wondering what's been going on with music in this town, dear reader? Fear not, for Houstonist has been trolling teh interwebz compiling a recap for you. That's right, it's time for Rock Talk.
Ruggles Green's second Art And Wine Night Party (how did we miss the first?) will be a Halloween-themed event feature work from artists Daniel Ortiz, Tra’ Slaughter and Lisa Chow. Work from the artists will be for sale, while Republic Beverage will school people on wine and Ruggles will provide hors d'oeuvres. Yum!
For the Week of October 26th - 28th, 2009 Goodness, we at Houstonist weren't sure we would make it through the weekend, but here we are again. Here's a list of what's going on this week to brighten up that rainy Monday you're having. It might be a tad on the light side, but we're sure the weekend will make up for it.
When we got an e-mail inviting us to join the fun at Saint Arnold's 2nd annual Foam Raiser for The Orange Show, we knew we'd be fools to turn it down. Two great local acts and some super-special cask ale? There was no way Houstonist would miss it. Apparently plenty of you fine folks were wise enough to attend the festivities as well. Here's some of what we caught on camera.
Are you going to any early Halloween parties this weekend? A local band's last local show? A movie premier? Well, if you have nothing planned yet, shame on you, but Houstonist has some suggestions below.
The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo is still a few months away, but those of your hankering to boot scoot around the dance floor for a good cause should check out the 2nd Ronald McDonald House Country Ball at Firehouse Saloon on Saturday night. Country music artist Mark McKinney will be playing tracks from his latest release while y'all choke down bbq and bid on silent auction items. Proceeds from the event benefit pediatric cancer patients served by RMH Houston.
Here at H-Town Rock we've been dreaming up an interview feature for a while, so we're proud to announce our new weekly feature: Get to Know a Houston Band. This week we sat down at Rudyard's with GTRS for a chat covering their everything from their album White Night White Night, their penchant for prank calls, and their impending move to Asheville, North Carolina. Yes, they're moving, but we wanted to catch them before they split.
For the second year in a row, Houston's Jamail Skatepark is hosting Rock The Cradle For Johnny Romano.
For the Weekend of October 22nd - 25th, 2009 Come one, come all! Behold that which Houstonist presents to readers everywhere upon this fine day: a bevy of music of which to partake this weekend, all of it guaranteed to be lute and lyre-free.
We're sure you been eagerly anticipating this week's installment of Rock Talk. Houstonist has been diligently hoarding tidbits of local music news like some nut-crazed squirrel packing for winter. Here's what you may have missed.
Tonight only, Houston's Studio Movie Grill will screen the movie .
For the Week of October 19th - 21st, 2009 Did you have a good weekend? Are you ready for more music? Here at Houstonist we're constantly thinking about the next show we'll be attending. Here's a look at what's going on this week.
- ALL WEEKEND
- Rock the Republic — Not technically in Houston but wharves. Looks to be a good time. Featuring bands including The Black and White Years, Hollywood Black, Smile Smile and many more. Add to that a poetry slam and other performance art. In Bryan. Tickets are $10 for one day or $25 for all weekend.
- Festa Italiana — Can you imagine the food at this event? Makes us want to ride our Vespa's to St. Thomas, but we also want to drink as much limoncello as possible so maybe that's a bad idea. Festival open till 11 p.m. tonight and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $6, at the University of St. Thomas in the Montrose.
- Crypticon, a convention for all things horror-related, at Reliant Stadium. Advanced tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids for a single day, or $55 for the weekend.
For the Weekend of October 15th - 18th, 2009 Well well well, look who's back to check on a weekend full of shows! We've got everything you need to know about the weekend in Houston music right here for you, dear reader. Here's the lowdown on what we'll be seeing this weekend.
Open mic competitions can be a crap shoot. We love the excitement of being among the first to spot an undiscovered up-and-comer, so we can handle the occasional histrionic poetry reading in exchange. Actually, we love the occasional histrionic poetry reading almost as much, but for far different reasons. If you are feeling up for a surprise then tonight Coffee Groundz is the place to be. Should you find yourself witnessing a paroxysm of self-indulgent bad judgement, there's no better excuse to sneak away than the Trentino Gelato case.
Well hello there, local music aficionado, we're so glad you could make it to our weekly session. Rock Talk has been hard at work determining just what went on since we last spoke.
U2 and Reliant Stadium allowed a sneak peek of the Claw stage the band is using on their current 360 Tour.
Houston gets a bad rap, environmentally. But the Shell Center for Sustainability (no irony there) is hoping to change that by addressing the question of how to provide clean water to the city of Houston for the next 100 years.
For the Week of October 12th - 14th, 2009 Houstonist might not have made it to a show on Friday due to our little shindig, but we hope you did. Here's where we'll be this week.
Your First Look: 600 sq mi: Hidden Opening Photos
A party is breaking out at The Big Top, in the 3700 block of Main Street. A birthday party for none other than the King of the Oldies, Allen Hill! Starting around 10:00 p.m. and lasting until 11:59 p.m., there will be a precursor to "the real deal" consisting of dancing and a fabulous musical performance by The Allen Oldies Band (we know it's fabulous because it always is, we can do that math).
Crack open your smart phone's calendar entry for tomorrow and Sharpie this in: "Go check out 600 sq mi: Hidden opening reception at Xnihilo Gallery to shake ass, drink beer and appreciate art."
Mildred’s Umbrella Theater Company presents "Night of the Giant", a play by local playwright John Harvey featuring an original score by another Houstonian, Elliot Cole. Whoever wrote the plot synopsis sure knows how to pique our interest:
Art Lies is a contemporary arts quarterly journal based out of Houston. Every year, the journal pairs with The Menil to present a lecture from a notable art critic.
For the Week of October 5th - 7th, 2009 Greetings dearest reader. Allow us to pass on our lesson learned from this weekend: there is such a thing as too much free Hennessy. Don't think that killed the fun we had, however. Here's a look at what's coming up over the next few days.
Saturday is the October Full Moon which means you should spend your weekend searching for the perfect Halloween costume. What else can you do this weekend?
Explore Houston from the perspective of the bayou. Buffalo Bayou Partnership offers boat tours the second Saturday of every month. The 30-minute ride takes you from Sabine Street to Bagby. No reservation necessary, times available from 10:00am-2:00pm, weather permitting. Boat picks up at Sabine Street Bridge North Boat Landing.
You're invited to stop by the Nordstrom Galleria location tomorrow between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. to meet Denise Dameris Hazen, author of "Treat Her Like a Princess: How to Help Your Girlfriend with Breast Cancer" for a very special book signing. Denise faced Stage 3 breast cancer and won! Having endured a double mastectomy, seventeen rounds of chemotherapy and six weeks of daily radiation treatments - she emerged stronger. The treatment itself can get a girl down, but not this one! She fought with determination and unfettered positiveness - with perhaps a touch of sass for good measure.
For the Weekend of October 1st - 4th, 2009 Houstonist knows there's something going on in that next town o'er yonder this weekend, but rest assured that the music will abound here as well. For those of you not making the annual pilgrimage to the sweaty dust-fields without toilets, here's a look at what you can see here in town.
University of Houston Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts has a thriving arts program, and tonight they are giving us a taste of what's in store for the fall season. The UH Arts Open House will feature on-site screen printing, a student dance performance, readings from the Creative Writing Program, live music from the UH Jazz Trio, inflatable sculptures and free food and drink. We're excited about the possibility of fondling period garments at the costume and stage prop "petting zoo". There's nothing like a hoop skirt and petticoats to get our motor running.
