We just ran across this synergistic video that features Houston Dynamo midfielder Stuart Holden and Rockets point guard Kyle Lowry goofing off on the basketball court for an Adidas shoot. Holden shows Lowry a kick basket combo, as Lowry jokes about lowering the net for Holden. more ›
Londonist, feeling distinctly peckish, enjoyed a gourmet breakfast, the "best pizza outside of Italy", a Brick Lane curry and some bathtub-cooked salmon.

As we've all seen, the Rockets v. Lakers series has had its ups and downs. One thing's for sure, though: It's good basketball, which is all the more reason to head over to Discovery Green tomorrow night (that's Thursday, 5/14) to cheer the Rockets on. The game will be shown on Disco Green's big inflatable screen right in front of the Anheuser-Busch stage; tipoff is at 8:30 p.m., but if you want to show up earlier, you can spend some quality time with The Hollisters (performing as part of the park's Thursdays Rock concert series). Seriously: Texas rock, sweet potato fries from the Lake House and basketball on a giant inflatable TV — what's not to love?
If you travel around the south side of the Medical Center area, you may have noticed the derelict midcentury fire station at the corner of Fannin and South Braeswood. Houston Fire Department's Station 33 was built in 1950 but was replaced in 2004 by a new station about a block south down Fannin. According to the current station's web site, the old station was originally a volunteer station that also served as the city hall for unincorporated Braeswood, which was eventually annexed by Houston in 1950. For the past few years the station has been a small homeless camp and a major target for graffiti, and the owner claims to be unaware of that. There is also a City of Houston Neighborhood Protection Corps violation notice placard on the building citing violations of municipal code sections 10-542 and 10-361. 10-542 regards a public nuisance concerning visual blight and 10-361 regards dangerous buildings. The card is dated October 10, 2005, and the corrections to the problem were to be remedied by October 29, 2005. Unfortunately, the three and a half year old sign is in much better condition than the building. more ›

We were pretty disappointed to hear that there will be no embarrassing or silly mayoral bet on the Rockets/Lakers playoff series, but we're proud that it's through no fault of our own. Mayor White made an offer that we definitely wouldn't refuse: breakfast tamales from Villa Arcos, lunch at Frenchy's and, very appropriately, dinner at Yao's. Looks like Mayor Villaraigosa over in Los Angeles doesn't have quite the confidence in his team (or maybe his city's dining options) that Mayor White does --- he declined to take the bet. What gives, LA? Does Mayor Villaraigosa really think the Lakers are bound to lose like Miya Shay suggests? more ›
It's that time of year again. The time when energy moguls from around the world descend upon our fair city for the conference of conferences. The big daddy of Oil & Gas gatherings. That's right, it's OTC week! Don't even think of booking a hotel in town. (Best to hit up the Londale motel for your escapades this week.)

The American Lung Association has completed their annual State of the Air survey and Harris County has received failing marks. The survey tallies the number of orange, red and purple ozone days and the amount of particle pollution to arrive at the grades. What's worse? Harris County's scores for 2009 have risen in every category compared to our 2008 scores. more ›

Good lists. Bad lists. You name a list, we're on it. BusinessWeek's list of the twenty-five most inventive cities is certainly no exception. San Francisco is no surprise at number one, but we were excited to be the top Texas city (sorry, Dallas) on the list at number ten. As BusinessWeek notes, we have Houston's twin giants, oil and medicine, to thank for all the brain juices flowing in our city. more ›
