What the futsal?

Another thing to add to the Houston diversity list: a futsal facility. What exactly is futsal? Well, we’re glad you asked. Think soccer, but abbreviated. According to Wikipedia, futsal is soccer with 5 people on each side, one being the goaltender. It’s played on a hard court with a smaller ball with less bounce. It is also usually played indoors. That is, except the facility recently opened in Houston…

What was here? 7575 Kirby edition

You may have noticed the condominiums on the northeast corner of Kirby at North Braeswood - 7575 Kirby and the Brentwood directly behind it - or if you're like us, you probably noticed the smell more than anything. Anyhow, this corner of prime real estate used to be really prime waterfront property owned by Rice University (then Rice Institute), who sold it to Glenn McCarthy in 1935. His estate, Glennlee, was completed by 1938 and designed by Milton McGinty (of River Oaks Shopping Center, Holland Lodge on Montrose, Rice Stadium, Cuney Homes, Cossaboom YMCA on the South Loop East).

Washington Ave. nightlife update

There hasn't been much new to report since we heard about obnoxious club-goers leaving their mark along Washington Ave. near Sixth Ward, but locals down west on Washington are dealing with the same 'ol stuff. This beauty of a parking job comes from a residence near Ei8ht (clever!). I guess there aren't any ditches in the 'burbs..

Spotlight on Houston Breweries

Ice cold beer is synonymous with summer and Houston is home to a few great local breweries. Some of these you might be familiar with and others you might not, either way we encourage you to stop by and take a sip.

New & Improved Houstonist Mobile Site

Houstonist has a new, kickass mobile site thanks to Neil Epstein, Ist-averse Techno Czar. All 11 of you readers out there trying to hit our site from your phone (and other mobile devices) were previously taken to a crappy minimalist type web site that appeared to have been designed by some who just discovered the wonders of this thing called the Internet.

Walking for a Cause: Skip Potts Update

Way back in February, Skip Potts entered Houston during his quest to walk across the United States to increase awareness on the need to improve the education system. This weekend he will finish the walk he began in September of last year. Follow his updates on twitter and give him a hardy hey ho on accomplishing a feat that few would ever consider doing for a great cause!

West University sewage stinking up Houston

If you have ever driven along North Braeswood near Kirby, you've probably smelled the awfulness that is the West University sewage plant (and yes, it's in Houston, not West University). Now that the city has cut down trees surrounding the plant - for "homeland security" reasons - the smell is making its way south of the bayou (the facility's north-facing entrance on Braeswood has never been "shielded"). Chris Peiffer, the City of West University's Public Works Director, told KTRK that the state of Texas ordered them to cut down the trees to increase the plant's visibility "so security guards can more easily spot anyone trying to break in - it's a matter of homeland security."
