Friday, finally! The temperature has moderated some this week, but the humidity has remained high. The sultry temperatures have us thinking in terms of Gone with the Wind. We can't help but think, "We are just sweltering in minimal clothing, who in their right mind would wear a freaking corset with layered hoopy under-things beneath some big honkin' dress?" Seriously, that stupid parasol is damn near worthless when the heat index is over a hundy! This week, we're bringing you a cocktail whose name evokes visions of Miss Scarlett and Rhett (he was hot - and we ain't talking meteorologically). Whatever poison you pick to unwind (although we recommend giving this little gem a whirl) - go forth celebrate the end of the work week, we're sure you deserve it as much as we do, if not more. Please note, if you have to work weekends......well, we apologize - we'll be thinking of you, really.

It's been hotter than a three dollar hooker (or two dollar pistol - pick your euphemism, or make one up like we did) here in H-Town, and when the scattered rains broke the heat wave, the humidity went up - net effect, still steamy, still hot and we're still all sweaty. This weeks "drink" is a shot that pays homage to just how hot our beloved town can be. We'll take the heat any ole day, as we still believe that Houston is the coolest place to live (even with the traffic, bugs and the long sultry summers). We never have to shovel the driveway, the cost of living is low (compared to other major cities) and our job market is still pretty decent - even now.

W 18th St. home showcase

If you live in the Heights you may have noticed the twin townhouses that were born over a year ago but were never finished. They are located on W 18th St, and one of them has been recently completed. Its ugly and decaying sibling, however, is still next door waiting naked in embarrassment for someone to cover her up or put her out of her misery. Don't let the warped wood scare you off, though - it's nothing some stucco (or EIFS) perhaps, won't fix! Everything looks pretty normal on Google maps, but take a (current) closer look!

Londonist witnessed unecessary tabloid shock at the languages spoken by some of London's children.

  • Labor Day is right around the proverbial corner! That means a three-day weekend and a fabulous excuse to fire up the grill and have some friends over for food and drink. Sure, you can always make a "cocktail" with the kid's Guyana Punch and a shot of clear liquor (you "call" it), but there's the everpresent hazard of one of the lil' cuties quaffing it on accident. So, we're bringing you a refreshing, slushy, citrusy bukkit drink. You will need to lay hand on a lidded vessel of plastic construction that will accomodate 11 cups of liquid and the expansion from freezing and still fit in the freezer. Or, you can punt and put plastic, zip-top containers of ice in the bucket - if you're not prone to being all "fancy".

What was here? Peter Brown edition

While doing your last little bit of shopping at the soon to be defunct Alabama Bookstop, you may have noticed more condos going up alongside the center (I know - surprise!!!). While we all hope that nasty crackshacks were torn down to make room for Lovett Homes' Kipling (patio) homes, something about the location was eerily familiar.

Yes, the Houstonist Bartender is back! This weeks edition is an ode to the horrific hot and dry weather we have been having of late. Those isolated thunderstorms that allegedly roll through our 600 square miles have been completely missing our headquarters. Though we were treated to a spectacular light and sound show, albeit a rainless one, recently. Have a few of these and choreograph your very own rain dance, it can't hurt (just try not to scare the neighbors with a nekkid version - unless that's how they roll). We may actually wash the car - that almost always does the trick!

Torontoist was shocked to discover the mythical chupacabra! Actually, a raccoon with alopecia, it turned out.
