Happy Friday, Houston! It's like fall outside and we've had to struggle internally with the idea of playing hookey from work to soak up some fresh air. Last week, we tried our level best to get you to participate in ITALP and incorporate pirate-lingo into your football spectating. This week, we are shamelessly paying homage to boytoy seeking older bitches the illustrious University of Houston Cougar football team. Now, they were not "as" illustrious or beloved (this is "fickle-sports fans Houston", after all) prior to pulling off a win against OSU, in Stillwater - who happened to be ranked 5, BEFORE they lost to our un-ranked Coogs. We are on the hunt for a ticket for tomorrow's game (don't hurt yourself laughing at us, we are dead serious, here), should you know where we might purchase one, or more. more ›

Ahoy! Houston, tomorrow is International Talk Like a Pirate Day! We were sussing out some rum recipes and the fine folks at Cruzan provided a good one. Perfect for watching some college football and yelling pirate-isms at the television. Shiver me timbers, the Cougars are off this week resting up from their huge win over the OSU Cowboys. AARRRRR, University of Texas is playing Texas Tech tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. and the mateys at Rice are tackling OSU tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. The Aggies take on Utah State at 6:00 p.m., as well. Whip up some of these delicious cocktails tomorrow afternoon and prepare a fine list of pirate insults to lob at the tv. Yeah, it sounds retarded - but, if you impose a "pirate talk only" rule, it'll be damn entertaining!! more ›

The month of September is kinda rough on a Houstonian. We had a lovely three day weekend, St. Arnold’s released Divine No. 8 - and all goodness is followed immediately by a weekend of tragedy and disaster. Eight years ago, today - the towers came down. We urge you to take a moment to think back, remember what you felt and pay homage to those whose lives were lost. If you have the opportunity, drive by 3100 Chimney Rock, pausing to view , or stopping to visitthe 9/11 Memorial created by Mike Smith and the firefighters of Station 28. In two days, you can remember last year’s Hurricane Ike and his devastation. There are people waiting for FEMA aid, for enough insurance monies to repair their homes. Don’t kid yourself one bit - this coastal region still has a lot of “blue roofs” and uninhabitable domiciles. We’re still waiting for Hollywood celebrities to descend on Port Bolivar to help rebuild…..we are so not holding our breath. more ›

The art deco Sterling Laundry building located at 4819 Harrisburg Blvd. was about to be cleared, along with its neighbors, to make way for the newest East End incarnation of light rail in Houston. It will still be cleared, but a compromise is underway as stated in this City of Houston news release:

Vice Mayor Pro Tem Sue Lovell, District H Council Member Ed Gonzalez, and At-Large Position 3 Council Member Melissa Noriega are pleased to announce that a historic structure in Houston's East End-the Sterling Laundry & Cleaning Co. façade at 4819 Harrisburg Blvd.-has been saved. This was accomplished through an effort between the Council Members, METRO, and leaders of the surrounding neighborhood. The façade will be saved and then relocated to Eastwood Park, where it will remain a part of the streetscape on Harrisburg, as it has been since 1935. more ›

Wow, Houston had two days of "fall" weather and now......let the rain come down. We need it, bad - yards are half to mostly dead, the only plants living in the flower beds are weeds. Welcome to Labor Day weekend - and all of the grilling, barbecueing, imbibing usually outdoor gatherings (or indoor if a scattered shower crops up).
