Sunday, August 10th at Shakepeare Pub there's a benefit that plans to bust out into a full open mic jam. Beginning at 2 p.m., various bands will be playing as part of a benefit forLarry Lownote Johnson (bassist for John McVey) and his wife, Angela Highnote Johnson. Angela was involved in a near fatal accident when a drunk driver rear ended her vehicle and the insurance money is simply not enough. Most artists are "self-employed"... [continue]

Tripping the Light Balsamic on July 28, 2008

Houstonist had the great fortune of attending Houston's first-ever "flavor tripping" party this past Friday, July 25th, hosted by the Houston Chowhounds. If you're anything like our friends, family and coworkers, your first question is probably, "Flavor tripping?" Which is inevitably followed quickly by, "Is that legal?" Easy answer first: yes, it's legal. And to answer the first question, flavor tripping is the newest culinary fad being embraced by curious foodies everywhere. Flavor tripping... [continue]

St. Arnold's has come up with a fabulous scavenger hunt! You don't have to run around all willy-nilly looking for stuff, and there's no geo-caching involved - but, there's beer! Here's the deal, all this week, until midnight August 3rd, you need to locate the various items on this video, or this one that have been stashed at downtown watering holes serving St. Arnold's. When you locate the item, get a photo of yourself with... [continue]

Houstonist braved the heat, crowds, light rail trains, random panhandlers and city sidewalks to enjoy this year's Houston Press Music Awards Showcase. The event was held at various spots along Main St. and points beyond. We snapped photos of as many bands as we could but couldn't be everywhere, so here are some highlights from this year's event.... University of Houston legend Wilson Whitley was posthumously inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame this past Friday in South Bend, Indiana along with 12 other players which included stars such as Heisman Trophy winner Doug Flutie and Penn St. head coach Joe Paterno. Whitley was a wrecking machine while at UH from 1972-76. His senior season was the best of all and it still remains the standard for all UH defensive players.... [continue]

Houstonist headed out to The Showgrounds at Sam Houston Race Park this past Sunday to catch skateboarding legend, Tony Hawk's traveling extreme sports show, the Boom Boom HuckJam. The weather was scorching hot but we braved the heat along with about a thousand other folks to see the show which included skateboarders, bmx bikers and motocross stunt riders. We even got a chance to see Tony Hawk prior to the show. Check out our pics!... [continue]

Flick: The Dark Knight on July 21, 2008

Believe the title, folks. This isn't your father's Bruce Wayne anymore; no campy, cartoonish or even remotely comedic elements will be found here. The second installment in Chris Nolan's increasingly deep and complex Batman series is indeed dark. Houstonist ambled up to the movie theatre on Sunday afternoon, intending to catch a matinee showing of The Dark Knight and expecting, despite reports of sold out shows across the nation, to secure a couple of... Stimulating! on July 16, 2008

With the very last of the stimulus checks being sent out to taxpayers this week, economic analysts are looking forward to viewing the full picture when it comes to how (and if) those taxpayers will use this money for its intended purpose. When the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 was passed on February 13th of this year, the idea was that low- and middle-class Americans who had made at least $3,000 in 2007 (and, more... [continue]

The Vans Warped Tour is coming to town this Sunday, July 6th at Sam Houston Race Park. Since 1995, shoe manufacturer, Vans, has sponsored this all day music and extreme sports festival which in the past has boasted up to 100 bands in a single show. In 1998 the festival went international with dates in Europe, Japan, Australia and Canada. This year, on the Houston stop of this festival, over 40 bands will be... [continue]

Unless you've just returned from a sabbatical taken underneath a rock, you'll have heard the news that Joe Horn, the Pasadena man who shot and killed two men who were robbing his neighbor's house, was cleared of any crimes by a grand jury yesterday. The decision came after seven months of private deliberation and public debate over a case that could have serious repercussions and set legal precedents for years to come. The facts are... In case you missed it, Houstonist had a crawfish boil this weekend. Over the course of three hours, we boiled and served 496 pounds of crawfish with Volcano holding the last five pounds for their own culinary delight. Thanks to everyone who made this event a success. Thanks to our 11 readers and your 109 friends for showing up to get your dine on. Thanks to Volcano Pete and his staff, particularly Andrea and... [continue]

One day after Astros pitcher Shawn Chacon went Latrell Sprewell on GM Ed Wade, the team announced today that they are parting ways with the disgruntled pitcher by placing him on waivers. If Chacon goes unclaimed, the Astros will terminate his contract and more than likely ending his MLB career. For those of you that have been living in a closet, Chacon was told yesterday to meet in manager's Cecil Cooper's office before the... [continue]

Missed Connections is a plethora of behavioral and grammatical car accidents. But, who are we to say that folks should not be seeking out some sexual chocolate, a man whore or other shimmering holes. Whatever. Everybody's gotta be somewhere. By the way, come to the crawfish boil if you're looking for guys and gals from Volcano. Dick... The Kid Rides Again on June 23, 2008

Slate takes notice of what millions of Houstonians already know: Houston, We Have No Problems (a longer version of the article can be found here, in Newsweek). Similar to the recent Kiplinger's article that named Houston as the nation's best city in which to "Live, Work and Play," the Slate article touts Houston's booming and diversified economy (we're only 50% dependent upon oil and gas, you know), the Texas Medical Center, the Port of... If the above posters look familiar to you and even if they don't, head over to Sig's Lagoon on Saturday, June 21st from 6 pm to 12 am at 3710 Main, for the opening of the Uncle Charlie Poster Show. Former local musician and artist, Uncle Charlie has been cranking out these awesome posters for about 18 years. Inspired and mentored by Austin's Frank Kozik in the mid 80's, Uncle Charlie began making posters... [continue]

The Dude Abides on June 20, 2008

Sometimes there's a man; sometimes, there's a man. Jason McElweenie of The Low End Theory is hosting the first annual Houston Lebowski Bash this Saturday, June 21st, at the Caroline Collective to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the day that man arrived on the scene. If you're a Big Lebowski-aholic, an entered Big Lebowski apprentice or simply a neophyte who's never heard of The Dude or The Jesus and simply wants to have a good... [continue]

Not too far from Houston is the town of Lumberton. It's a small and friendly community where everyone knows each other. It's also the hometown of Crystal. Of all the thousands and thousands of beautiful women who entered Maxim's Hometown Hottie Contest, Crystal was one of the elite few who made it to the semi-finals. Houstonist had a chance to talk with this Texas beauty last week on her new found fame. Crystal, can... [continue]

The Comeback Kid on May 30, 2008

It's official: Houston is the best place to live in America. At least according to Kiplinger's Personal Finance, which placed Houston at the top of their list of Best Cities to Live, Work and Play for 2008. The respected personal finance magazine named a number of reasons that Houston topped their list this year: our strong economy (in spite of any national trends), continued job growth, low cost of living, diverse cultures and vibrant...
