Jugglers, performers on stilts, dancing girls, horn players, a bass player, drummers and percussionist all converged on Market Square as the sun went down for a little free early evening entertainment. It was Portland's own MarchFourth Marching Band who provided Friday nights free show and we posted about them earlier in the day. So we took our own advice and headed down there to catch this unique and highly entertaining show. As we strolled... more ›

::OpMom Web 2.0 Launch Party at Benjy's:: Three things we love: Moms, Web 2.0, and Benjy's. Can't go wrong here. And Houstonist has your ticket to this private launch party. Unless you've been living under a Web 1.0 rock, you are probably aware that Houston has recently been a hot bed for Social Media Startups, as Brad Hem reported this weekend. One of these ventures, the locally-based OpMom, tonight celebrates their own jaunt into Web... more ›

Spent all your cash on girlie drinks and shattered dreams again this weekend, didn't you? No worries - Thriftster gives you the lowdown on cheap stuff to do until Paycheck Friday. The best part about a 3 day weekend: A 4 day work week. Bonus! So happy Tuesday. The weekend's just around the corner. After visiting the HCP last week for the SPIN Party, we realized just how little we visit this art space, considering all the great programs they offer. Like First Tuesday! Yes, we are THAT excited it's Tuesday. First Tuesday provides an opportunity for local photographers and media-based artists to share their work... more ›

Ever wanted to be that lucky schlub who gets to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Major League Baseball game? Are you good at whoring yourself out for attention? Great! Missed Connections activity was all over the place this week. The grammatical debate from last week raged on amid newer posts, likely spoofs, stirring the pot. Chicks welcomed the freaky deaky and showed off their crotchular regions, or frotch as grandma says. Health clubbers didn't miss many connections, but there were still a lot of M4M misses. Luby's? Mmm. Ewww! One lady offered her advice to dudes seeking dudes - impromptu package checks. Grocery... more ›

If you haven't yet seen Whitney Casey's (of Great Day Houston and CNN fame) new weekly Chronicle column "Relationships with Whit," then, by most accounts, you're pretty lucky. We usually leave hating on the Chron to other local blogs, but we couldn't help but notice some of the snitty reactions to Casey's column. From James Campbell's About:Chron blog: So the Chronicle has hired Whitney Casey to do a column on relationships? This is a woman... more ›

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. I’m thinking of buying my first new car, and I’m terrified of the whole process. I just know I’m going to get screwed. Do you have any tips for me? I don’t know what undercoating is! You need two basic items when traveling the murky waters of car buying: education and the ability to walk away. The first one is easy; the second... more ›

Well, the peak pricing proposal for the Westpark Tollway died more quickly than we expected: On Thursday, Harris County Judge Ed Emmett said the county commissioners will cancel the proposed doubling of Westpark tolls at rush hour, a decision that "was certainly influenced by the public's reaction." Under the proposal, transactions along the Westpark would have doubled from $1.25 (after a general 25-cent increase across the entire county toll road system to $2.50 from 6... more ›

Not too long after having a minor heart attack, Frank Piazza drove down Bissonett to eat some healthy food at Cleburne's, heeding the advice of the cardiologist who fixed him up. On his way there, at the intersection of Wakeforest, he eyed an available corner suite in a strip center that used to house a Philly Cheesesteak Connection. The space, with its prominent location, long profile, and spacious windows, immediately caught Frank's eye. Already... more ›

This week, we told you all about the upcoming opening of the much talked about Hotel ZaZa in the Museum District. Seems like the new hotel is on everyone's radar. Including New York Magazine. This week, the popular entertainment and culture magazine's website (www.nymag.com) featured Houston as their Weekend Escape Destination, describing a stay at the "highly theatrical" Hotel ZaZa as a way to earn some street cred in the Bayou City. The article... more ›

Trash pickup, like a lot of public services, is one of those things we never give much thought to — aside from the times when a holiday pre-empts our regular trash day (like this week) and we have to figure out when to roll our beloved black city trash bin out to the curb. But come July 2, one in six Houston households will have to turn their thoughts to garbage: On that day, new trash collection routes will go into effect for around 67,000 households in the city. more ›

When we were little, Mama Houstonist always told us not to take shelter under a tree during a lightning storm. And though we followed her advice, we were always a little skeptical: People don't really get hit by lightning if they're standing under a tree, do they? Actually, yes, they do — just ask the four guys who were struck yesterday at Bear Creek Park. The men were playing soccer at the park when a... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Ever been to Podunk, Texas? You have if you've ever visited the east Houston neighborhood of Denver Harbor, which was affectionately called Podunk during the Great Depression because it was then far enough east to seem semi-rural. And as of yesterday, thanks to a state House resolution, Podunk is the Official Mythical Town of Texas. Grady got the resolution passed by gathering 700 signatures on a petition and persuading the area's... more ›

When we saw that KTRK had done a Crime Tracker report on Houston movie theaters, our first thought was "Tinseltown Westchase." And it turns out we weren't too far off: the Tinseltown theater located at 3300 West Sam Houston Parkway saw the most violent crime last year, including one rape and five robberies. However, the AMC Studio 30 at 2949 Dunvale reported the most crime overall, but none of them were violent. Infractions included possession... more ›

Here's a service the city provides that we're not excited to use: you can now fill out police reports online. The purpose of the online form is to "allow Houston citizens to conveniently file police reports from home, work, or anywhere with Internet access." Which sounds just a little more charming than it really is. This online report filing and the anticipated citywide WiFi is sure to make filing police reports much easier. Why is our city so tech-savvy? more ›

Wow, this would suck: In northwest Harris County last night, a man cleaning up around his work area got his hair stuck in an industrial machine. It happened around 11 p.m. at a T-3 Energy Services facility on Cypress-North Houston Road as the unidentified 19-year-old man was sweeping up near a machine that makes metal parts for energy companies. The guy thought the machine was completely turned off, but he was wrong: His long hair became caught in two long poles that continuously spin, and co-workers had to pull the guy out of the machinery. "It pulled the scalp and actually pulled him," co-worker Quincy Daniel told KPRC. "It just snatched his hair off. It threw him on the ground. When he left, his hair was still standing right there in the machine. ... It was pretty gross, but we tried our best to help him." Now, please excuse Houstonist for a moment while we hold our hands to our head, dance around the room and yell "Ow! Ow! Ow! Ow!" more ›

Good morning, Houston. If you really love being in your car, you may be in luck: According to former Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, traffic in Houston is only going to get worse. His answer? Start planning now for new road construction and encourage people to take public transportation. Our advice: learn to multi-task. >> That ain't pretty: Looks like it could be the end of the line for a notorious Houston beauty school: On... more ›

Yesterday, Mayor Bill White announced a new plan for Old Sixth Ward - the Chronicle stated that "[Mayor White] proposed creation of a special district within the neighborhood west of downtown with design guidelines for construction and renovation, along with financial incentives to discourage demolition of historical houses." Historic, indeed: according to the Old Sixth Ward Historic District site, the neighborhood has the largest amount of Victorian homes in this region (except for Galveston,... more ›

We thought we might get some insight into convicted murderer Clara Harris's state of mind when she took the stand yesterday in the wrongful death trial brought by her in-laws — but it turns out we could have learned more form Oprah's jailhouse interview. Harris, who was convicted in 2003 of killing her husband, David, by running him down with her Mercedes, pleaded the Fifth, refusing to answer any of the 27 questions asked of... more ›

Sunday. Usually, a quiet, contemplative day in the Blogosphere. But not here in the Ist-a-Verse. Nonono! Just look below and see all of the wild and crazy stuff our staffs are up to. In Austin, bands are beginning to confirm for SXSW and the rumor mill is up and running. Good thing, too, because we all know how much Austinites love live performances. Austin also found itself in the national spotlight, with Longhorn Legend... more ›

Well, you Houstonians were really disappointing this New Years. A quick browse of this week's Missed Connections proves you aren't following our advice and speaking up to potential lovers. A whole slew of posts were from New Year's Eve parties, and most of you blamed too much alcohol for your passivity. What's the worst that could come from your candor? Your love interest could slur a messy, "Nooo," and drunkenly stumble away. You'll never learn. more ›

What's better than being the first one to see a new release (we actually wait to avoid the crowds and the cell phone toting people)? Why, seeing a new IMAX release, of course! This Friday evening, you may, if you wish, check out the opening of Night at the Museum, at the museum! Specifially, the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The ticket purchase, $12/adult or $9/member, also gets you a free pass to the rest... more ›

On Sundays, Houstonist runs opinion pieces relevant to life in Houston. The opinions expressed below are entirely those of the author. Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. Dilettante, One of my coworkers insists on pouncing on me first thing Monday morning, before I’ve had a chance to grab some coffee or even sit at my desk, to ask me how my weekend was. I think she just wants me... more ›

December is the peak of the citrus season for Houston (and the rest of Zone 9) and to celebrate, Urban Harvest and the Bayou City Farmer's Market is hosting the Second Annual Citrus Festival December 9th and 16th at the farmers market on Eastside. So, say you want to participate in the rampant consumerism associated with Black Friday. We love that term by the way. It carries with it an appropriate sense of foreboding. What's that? You don't want to stand outside in the cold (predictions are it will be in the 40s Friday morning) with a gaggle of grumpy strangers? Well, your sister needs an iPod, so shut your pie hole and take our advice. This year's... more ›

Fangirls everywhere, rejoice: Wolverine (the multi-talented Hugh Jackman, who can also sing and dance--we saw him in Oklahoma! once on stage on London) and Batman (Christian Bale, who can brood, and also brood) are together in a movie at last. more ›
