Monday: We are confused about the Sona play date, so let's try again shall we? This week, Phillyist saw the waters of a landmark fountain run red for a Showtime marketing stunt, the Phils pull ahead, and some serious nostalgia. They also got a chance to review an awesome tribute album, reminded folks to see the King and appreciated their beautiful skyline. Chicagoist knows what it's like to like the Cubs. But naming your kid Wrigley Fields? At least they can breathe a little easier now that Grossman's out and...
With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse. Luckily, even with all the things we have to do, we still managed to get together to let you know what we've all been up to. After cooling down from a hot weekend of many badass Sunset Junction Street Fair photo dispatches, LAist asked...
Good morning, Houston. The AP reports on an interesting phenomenon: According to preschoolers, anything tastes better if it's wrapped in McDonald's packaging — even carrots, milk and apple juice. The study was done by Stanford University researcher Tom Robinson, whose subjects were 63 low-income children aged between 3 and 5; Robinson's conclusion was that the kids' perception of foods' taste was "physically altered by the branding." Anyone want to make the argument that marketing...
Good morning, Houston. Does all this rain make you feel like crap? There may be a medical reason: It's called non-allergic rhinitis, and it can be triggered by changes in air pressure — you know, the kind that accompany bad weather. Rhinitis symptoms are a lot like those that come with allergies: congestion, sinus pressure and post-nasal drip. Decongestants, saline washes and nasal sprays can help, but the only thing that'll really make you...
We noticed a news story yesterday afternoon about a 5-year-old boy who was reportedly in a woman's car when it was stolen from a north Houston gas station — but it turns out that the woman's report was totally fabricated, and now she may face misdemeanor charges. Marissa Aguillar, 29, initially reported that her son, Jordan Rodriguez, was in her gold Chevrolet Impala that was stolen while she was getting gas at the Exxon station...
Good morning, Houston. If you're looking forward to Earthquest, the $600 million-plus, 250-acre theme park being planned for east Montgomery County, you should be happy to know that the park plan has gotten a boost: Earlier this month, Gov. Rick Perry signed legislation to enable tax incentives for the project. The park, to be built on Caney Creek near Highway 59 and FM 1485 in New Caney, is the brainchild of paleontologist Don Lessem,...
Good morning, Houston. If you happened to be in the Medical Center yesterday afternoon, we're pretty sure you noticed the natural gas leak. Even if you didn't see it, chances are you got caught in the massive traffic snarls it created after Main Street was closed between University and Sunset. Officials with The Methodist Hospital said a construction crew accidentally broke the gas line around noon, and it took most of the day to...
So we're all familiar with the Emergency Alert System, right? It's the thing that breaks into television and radio broadcasts to let us know about emergency situations, from explosions or terrorist attacks down to severe weather. Well, the local EAS system is on the blink right now — and, ironically enough, it was taken out by severe weather. The antenna for the radio-based alert system is atop the 31-story Five Greenway Plaza, and it seems...
More people made it through last month in Houston than last April, according to unofficial HPD statistics. This April recorded 30 homicides, compared to last year's 31. That brings the 2007 total to 119, also down from last year's 123. Within that number, only about 2 each month involved Katrina evacuees, compared to the 20% of last year's total number. But every silver lining has its dark cloud. While the number of homicides has decreased...
Good morning, Houston. If you spend your days worried that an asteroid will slam into Earth, killing us all, this probably won't do much to ease your mind: NASA says it can identify all the asteroids that could hit the Earth, but it's not sure it has the money to do so. The agency estimates it would cost $1 billion to find at least 90 percent of the 20,000 potentially hazardous asteroids and comets...
Good morning, Houston. Some good news: It's Friday. Some bad news: If you entered a contest on the Chronicle's website, your personal information could have been made public. SecurityProNews discovered a public section of the site that contained the names, addresses, phone numbers and e-mail addresses of thousands of people trying to win stuff from the Chron — and though the information has been removed, there's still the chance that John Q. Public could...
Good morning, Houston. If you attended mass on Ash Wednesday, we hope it went more smoothly than one at the cathedral in Santa Fe, N.M. During the mass, CD players duct-taped to the undersides of pews began blasting sexually explicit language — as you might expect, it was disruptive. Church staff members took the CD players to the basement, after which a bomb squad arrived and blew two of the three players up. For...
With the corporate naming wave having swept over professional sports and now taking firm hold on college campuses, we knew it was only a matter of time before the folks in charge of corporate marketing turned their attention to the remaining untapped resource: public school systems. One of the early cases is happening right now in Conroe, where school district officials are weighing a $1 million offer to name their high school football stadium after Woodforest National Bank.
We were really happy yesterday when we heard that Isiah Ramirez, the 2-month-old kid whose drugged-out mom lost him somewhere between Houston and San Antonio, had been found in California. But it didn't take long for our feelings of relief to turn into feelings of "Wha?" And apparently, we're not the only ones wondering exactly what happened this weekend that led Isiah on his bizarre cross-country trip.
Talk about parents who shouldn't be parents: Houston FBI agents and San Antonio police are working to find a 2-month-old boy whose mother apparently misplaced him while she was on drugs. We only wish we were kidding.
On our way to work yesterday, we all experienced high water in some sort of fashion. Hell, it’s a part of life in Houston with the construction zones everywhere. For those who travel early in the morning on I-10 near Wayside, they were caught by high water on the freeway. The culprit? A $15 fuse that blew. Ah, technology.
This was not a very happy week for the -ist network as one of our own, Phillyist co-editor Star C. Foster, passed away early in the week. Her wit, intelligence, and good nature shone through the site, making Phillyist an immensely fun read. She was loved by many and will be missed by all. Phillyist paid tribute to her this week with a heartfelt letter to her and an obituary. And now, the awkward...
While the neon refinery pictured is on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science and is perfectly safe, emitting no smoke plumes, operating refineries do have their issues, at times. Yesterday afternoon, a Valero Refinery in Texas City began flaring when some steam boilers lost power, causing a Level 1 Alert to be called for the area (Houstonist wonders - what colors are assigned to these alerts? This one sounds "cerulean" to us). The Galveston Daily News had this report on the incident:
Photograph of Rick Santorum conceding defeat with his family by Gene J. Puskar/AP The -ists this week had politics on the brain. And what goes better with politics? Partying-- that's two great tastes in one. Oh, and Kevin Federline...can't forget about Kevin Federline. That's three great tastes in one. -Bostonist discussed two big state issues-- what sort of math constitutes a marriage and what kind of alcohol can be sold in most grocery stores....
Come on, you've got ten bucks to spare. Even we have ten bucks to spare, and nobody pays us. Here's how we'll be spending ours.... Saturday, November 11 The Flamenco Poets Society and Casa Ramirez Folk Art Gallery present Lorca: Poetry & Dance, a billingual reading in Spanish and English with a dance component. Houstonist didn't even know we had a Flamenco Poet's Society, but since we do, this is what we're planning to check...
Good news for you Texans fans planning to attend this weekend's game: The FBI said the threat to blow up seven NFL stadiums, including Reliant, was a hoax. The online threat, you'll remember, made the news Wednesday after the Homeland Security Department put local officials and stadium owners in the cities named in the threat — Atlanta, Cleveland, Houston, New York, Oakland, Miami and Seattle — on alert. But it turns out the bomb threat...
The Homeland Security Department has put officials and NFL stadium owners in seven U.S. cities, including Houston, on alert after a warning was posted online claiming that the cities' stadiums would be destroyed by dirty bombs this weekend — but the government says it's looking at the threat "with strong skepticism." The threat was posted Oct. 12 as part of an ongoing online conversation. It warned of attacks on NFL stadiums in Houston, Atlanta, New...
Somehow, the world of -ists managed to make it through the week despite news that Jen & Vince broke up. Chicagoist had fall on their mind as they made squash and fudge, read "House of Leaves" and ">tried to figure out what's next for the Cubs. Not fall related, but still of utmost concern, the whole skinny black pants thing. Torontoist fought off an evil scourge of raccoons and went to go see who would...
When it comes to highway construction, artistic endeavors might not work quite as planned — take, for example, the new Galveston causeway, where an undulating side wall is making some people seasick. No kidding.
The usual Hamilton crew begs your indulgence for going AWOL last week--we assume that you found lots of fun to do on your own, since we didn't get any emails (angry or otherwise). We're back now, though. We promise. Friday, August 18 Teatro Multimedia is the product of the second of three workshops held by Talento Billingue de Houston and led by Maria Angeles Romero, one of the most notable performance artists who makes use...
We figure the next couple of days might be among the safest for air travel, considering all the security regulations that went into effect yesterday after British authorities foiled a terror plot involving transatlantic jets. But they may also be your best chance to be on TV or in the paper if you're in the right place: Local media has descended on airports to check up on travelers and see how they're coping with life under the travel read alert.
In case you missed it between the terror alert and the recovering penguins: Former TSU Priscilla Slade made her first court appearance yesterday morning since being indicted on felony charges of misusing funds, and not much happened. Her hearing was reset for Sept. 14, and that was that.
The Amber Alert for missing 3 year old Danielle Jiminez, allegedly kidnapped by her father after he stabbed her mother to death on Tuesday, has been cancelled. The girl has not yet been found, but police are actively seeking both the little girl and her father, Leando Jiminez. The body of the girl's mother was found in a Channelview parking lot on Monday, and the case is being handled by Harris County detectives rather than HPD.
