Yes, Houston - The Black Godfather is gracing us with his presence this Friday night!!! Houston's own, The Allen Oldies Band will be backin' up Andre Williams at the Continental Club and the show begins at 10 p.m. You don't know who he is? We'll hook you up. A ladie's man from way back, Andre was born in Bessemer, Alabama in 1936 and eventually ended up in Detroit, where he recorded over 50 songs for Fortune Records. He has worked for Barry Gordy and produced records for Stevie Wonder and Ike and Tina Turner. In addition to his own songs, he has written material for George Clinton's Funkadelic. Now, Chi-Town is where he makes his home. Some of his material includes "Shake A Tailfeather", "Bacon Fat", "JailBait" and "Pass the Biscuits". As if this weren't intriguing enough, you really need to see "raunch rock" for yourself, so head on over to the Continental Club for some serious good times tomorrow night.
One small block in Houston, one large music scene - especially this coming weekend. This event is not recommended for the faint of heart, new age-types or the extremely un-coordinated (there will be dancing, foolish, crazy, too-hip-to-care, dancing - hell, brang your uncoordinated ass on - we are bringing ours). Both local, both about the most fun you can have with your clothes on - tequila shots not recommended. Two local bands will be taking over the block, starting with Disco Expressions on Friday night. Yes, disco - bust out your polyester, bring on your wide collars and satin and stuff, get ready for some kung fu fighting and do the locomotion all the way to the Continental Club, from 10:00 p.m. until you don't have to go home, but cannot stay there - or 2:00 a.m., whichever comes first. Oh but wait, fans of music made popular WAY before 1980, there's more! Saturday, same bat time, The Allen Oldies Band (our personal favorite) will be cruisin' on over to The Big Top at 3712 Main for some delirious fun and general mayhem. Bring a penchant for peanut butter and your best good mashed potato moves, and some folding money for the bartender(ress). We double dog dare you to have a bad time at either show - just try, TRY!!!
So, Houstonist has forewarned you about a couple of events this weekend, The Orange Show Extravaganza whch is occuring Saturday afternoon (props to reader BShirley - we were remiss) and the AIDS Walk 2007 on Sunday. The Orange Show is typically looking for helpers at it's events - even if it's free, it's still gotta go off without a hitch. Call them at 713.926.6368 to see if you can be more than a participant this...
Here is a big, big Houstonist "heads up". The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art will re-open this weekend with some fantastic fanfare and events. This event is from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. this Saturday, it is FREE to attend and beer and wine will be available with proper I.D. (have we got your undivided attention, yet?). This marks a re-opening celebration of the Orange Show - plus (so proud of our Orange Show!!!) there will be a very special presentation as The Orange Show has recently been included in The National Register of Historic Places. But WAIT there's more, and it's free to attend, did we mention that?
Instead of vegging in front of the TV, or fighting the crowds at the mall, we suggest one of these concerts to pass away your holidays. Some great original local bands to catch this week include The Dimes and Something Fierce at Walter’s, and Ryan Scroggins’ ska band at Fitz....

The holidays are upon us, but there are still some good live acts to see this week: Wednesday We have a feeling that Bob Schneider is probably on Santa’s “naughty” list this year, but that’s probably the way he wants it. Expect a more laid-back, acoustic Bob for this show, combining his folk-rock story-telling with some ditties that your mother would be horrified to hear. 8 p.m. at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck | tickets and...
