Yesterday was the second of the Super Tuesdays for this Presidential Election year and included primary elections in Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont. Houstonist could careless about who wins. We're just excited to see the record turnout at the polls. We all win when that happens. Congratulations, Houston, and all you Texans that don't live in our kickass town.

Seeing as how it's now officially 2008 — which, by the way, is both the International Year of the Potato and the International Year of Sanitation (thanks, U.N.!) — we figured it was a good time to pay a visit to the Houstonist Favorites page and see what your favorite Houstonist posts of 2007 were.
Good morning, Houston. Another day, another ranking: This time, Houston is the second most dangerous place in the U.S. for letter carriers — at least in terms of dog bites. According to the U.S. Postal Service, 94 mail carriers were bitten by dogs in Houston last year, putting us slightly behind Santa Ana, Calif., which logged 96 bites. The safest city in the country: New York City, of all places. Who knew? The USPS...
As we watched the ultra-classy Larry Birkhead celebrating his little bundle of cash solemnly announcing that he was the father of Anna Nicole Smith's baby last week, we foolishly breathed a sigh of relief. "Finally," we thought, "the media can turn its attention to something else. Bring on the Imus!" We should have known better. Over the weekend, the AP reported that Howard K. Stern, Smith's former attorney (and ex-baby daddy contender), has filed suit...
Good morning, Houston. The Internet has become such a part of our lives that it's hard sometimes to step back and see just how pervasive it really is — but the folks at Domain Name Wire came up with an interesting way to do that: They counted the number of URLs advertised along Highway 71 and I-10 between Austin and Houston. The grand total? More than 68, including the whopper qualityconcreteandswimmingpools.com (which doesn't seem...
Good morning, Houston. If you have an outstanding municipal warrant, it's time to start watching out: More than 150 law enforcement agencies, including HPD, are gearing up to arrest you next week. It's part of the Great Texas Warrant Roundup, which runs for a week beginning Friday; if you don't take care of your warrant, KHOU warns, you risk "being arrested and embarrassed in front of family, friends or even co-workers." No, not co-workers!...
Austinist gets arty with an interactive guide to SXSW, loved some local art galleries and a new art exhibit and lamented the possible loss of "Friday Night Lights" production to New Mexico. Bostonist was happy they finally found an Anna Nicole Smith connection to their fair city and that an Apple Store was opening up. They were less happy that new rules have been established limiting underage shows and that their Governor is spending...
Good morning, Houston. If you attended mass on Ash Wednesday, we hope it went more smoothly than one at the cathedral in Santa Fe, N.M. During the mass, CD players duct-taped to the undersides of pews began blasting sexually explicit language — as you might expect, it was disruptive. Church staff members took the CD players to the basement, after which a bomb squad arrived and blew two of the three players up. For...
An update in the court battle over custody of Anna Nicole Smith's remains: Judge Larry Seidlin ruled today that Richard Milstein, the guardian of Smith's infant daughter, should get the body. It's now up to Milstein what to do with the body — Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, wanted her buried in Texas, but her boyfriend, Howard K. Stern, said she should be buried with her son in the Bahamas. (Smith apparently told Arthur several years ago that she wanted to be buried near Marilyn Monroe, who is entombed in Los Angeles.) No one's sure yet what Milstein will do with Smith's body, but Seidlin gave his opinion of what should happen: "I want her to be buried with her son in the Bahamas," he said. "I want them to be together."
Good morning, Houston. Has it been a crazy week for you? It kind of has for us — but really, we got nothing compared with what happened in the custody hearing for Anna Nicole Smith's body and daughter in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., yesterday. By all accounts, it was a circus (what else would you expect?), and Judge Larry Seidlin did his best to keep it all under control. Seidlin said Smith's body will remain...
Houston attorney John O'Quinn is in Florida this morning to help Anna Nicole Smith's mom fight for custody of Smith's body, which is being held pending the outcome of a custody hearing. Smith's mother, Virgie Arthur, wants Smith's body to be buried in Houston, but she's up against Howard K. Stern, who claims he's the father of Smith's infant daughter, Danielynn. Stern says he wants to take the body to the Bahamas so Smith can be buried next to her son, Daniel. But Arthur says she wants to bury Smith's body in Houston and wants Daniel's body exhumed and brought here as well. And at this point, it looks like who will end up with the body is anyone's guess.
So let's be honest: All weekend, you were sitting around thinking, "Sure, I'd like to know who the father of Anna Nicole's daughter is, but what I really wonder is: What's going on with Lisa Nowak?" Fortunately, the media provided a heathy dose of astronaut-related updates over the weekend. Here's what you might have missed: On Thursday, some friends had dropped by Nowak's Clear Lake home for a visit, according to an AP report carried...
We get all our Beyonce--and other celeb--news from PerezHilton.com. The deliciously mean Perez--who calls himself the Queen of All Media-- has been getting lots of press recently, and his site is the place for gossip. Admit it, everyone reads US Weekly sometimes. And if catty columnists are your thing, check out this blog for a ton of guilty-pleasure fun. As an added bonus, the proudly gay and Latino Perez has also got great taste it...
Valentine's Day is only a few days away, and we here across the Gothamist network wanted to express would like to tell you, in the spirit of the holiday, just how much we love you, our readers. Don't let it get to your heads, though. There are plenty of things we love, you included. Just be glad you're not amongst the things we hate. SFist saw their beloved mayor enter rehab, and they loved the...
This week Houstonist is trying something new to keep you updated on the city's growing internet scene. Every weekend, we'll feature some of our favorite posts from local blogs the past week. So, without further ado, here's what Houstonians have been up to:
With yesterday’s sudden death of Houston native Anna Nicole Smith, we thought it would be appropriate to feature one of the music videos that she appeared in. As far as we know, there were only a handful of music videos that she starred in, but we think this one from 1993 shows her at her best. The video is by the always ultra-cool, ex-Roxy Music vocalist Bryan Ferry. The song is a cover of...
No lines were memorized, no one yelled "ACTION" but her final film, video really, has been aired and sold. Reported to have fetched $500,000 as Splash News & Picture Agency (read: paparazzi outfit) peddled a video showing paramedics administering CPR to Anna Nicole Smith, as she is being wheeled out of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel. Apparently, the video is somewhat non-descript, as you cannot view her face, or even her hair - much less...
The shot from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor inkoluv. Trying to give everyone a break from the Anna Nicole/Crazy Astronaut news, here's a lucky (and skillful) shot taken at the Williams Tower. Besides the nice contrast of blue sky and green of the folliage, there's something lurking in the background. Can anyone guess what it is? If you've got a camera, and you love Houston, consider joining Houston's best photographers in the Houstonist...
So here we are in the first full day of a World Without Anna Nicole — and though she's gone, the news isn't likely to stop anytime soon. Today, the medical examiner's office in Broward County, Fla., will conduct an autopsy on Smith to see if it can determine how she died, and closer to home, experts say her legal battles will probably stay in the courts for quite some time. First, what we know...
FoxNews has confirmed that one of Houston's own, Anna Nicole Smith has passed away. Born Vickie Lynn Hogan on November 28, 1967 in Houston, Texas the "Reality TV Star" and former TrimSpa spokeswoman (who was just included in a class-action suit against the company) has passed away in Hollywood, Florida. She was found unresponsive in her hotel room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel - where she had been photographed at a boxing match earlier...
On Sundays, Houstonist runs opinion pieces relevant to life in Houston. The opinions expressed below are entirely those of the author. This Tuesday (November 7) is Election Day. This means only two more days of those terrible TV commercials – the ones with the booming voiceover and no discernable ties to reality. My opponent, Bob Smith, likes children. In fact, he likes them a lot. He may have eaten a child in his twenties while...
The Chronicle ran a report this morning on Google’s semi-new search engine “Google Trends,” which allows you to type in multiple words and phrases and see the Top 10 cities and regions that have googled those terms in the past two years. We think it’s a fun feature, too, so we thought we would share someof our findings. Since we’re so competitive with other Texas sports franchises, we thought we’d take a look at...
KTRK is reporting on the latest in an odd story out of Baytown involving a possibly loveless marriage, a family feud, millions of dollars and a lengthy court case. Wow, sounds a little like someone else we know, eh? But in its own way, the story of Perry "Bit" Whatley is even stranger. First, some background: Whatley, 83, spent his career working at Exxon's Baytown refinery. He and his first wife, Florence, built up a...
Sometimes you need to clean yourself up, get serious, and move in with daddie for a few months before you head to Latin America for a new gig. The District bid's Jenna Bush adios. D.C.-based television shows have an elderly audience and DCist has some suggestions to fix that. They're also throwing Butterstick the panda bear a birthday bash. Yeah, we may have a few issues with our World Cup broadcasters here, but this guy...
So all the trouble E. Pierce Marshall went to trying to keep his stepmom, Anna Nicole Smith, from inheriting his oil tycoon father's fortune ended up being, well, a bit of a waste: Marshall died last week after what the family called a "brief and extremely aggressive infection." He was 67.
Shanghaiist probably knows a little more about China than the Chicago Sun-Times. Giving them the benefit of the doubt on that one. The city does to have a music scene. Don't even front like they don't. They also have Dorito bananas and white guys shopping for wives. What they don't have is any more tolerance for jaywalkers. Bostonist sees Boston and Somerville each whip out their art and face off. A plagiarized novel is the...
Now that Anna Nicole Smith has got a Supreme Court win under her belt, she might be making room for something else: Several media outlets have been reporting the former Playboy playmate and widow of J. Howard Marshall II to be pregnant. In an e-mail statement to the Associated Press, Smith's lawyer Howard K. Stern said, "If Anna Nicole is pregnant, she obviously doesn't want anybody to know yet," and that "If she's not pregnant, she's not denying the rumor because she thinks it's funny how much of a stir it's causing. She'll leave it up to you to guess which one it is."
The Supreme Court gave Anna Nicole Smith the green light to keep fighting for her beloved husband's fortune today, saying an appeals court was wrong when it ruled that a Texas probate court had total jurisdiction over the estate of oilman J. Howard Marshall III.
DCist helps us make more sense of the world this week. Posts like this concert review are the reason for Scott Stapp. DCist also enumerates the reasons for playing ultimate frisbee, Condi’s tight buns, their love of a local convenience store, and their jealousy of a person in Seattle calling the city. LAist documented graf artist Banksy’s most recent visit to LA in one two three posts. They also found the best possible use for...
