If you're anything like Houstonist — and let's face it, you are — you divide your day pretty evenly between three tasks: counting down the days until the premiere of the . Hollywood and the British press generally take care of the first two for us, and now the folks behind Monnalisa, the bar in the new Hotel Sorella, are giving us an outlet for No. 3, too.
Houstonians curious about the more technical aspects of the arts might be interested in a lecture tonight at The Menil Collection by Chief Conservator Brad Epley. Epley will talk about the field of conservation, and how it relates specifically to contemporary art. We know it seems like Houstonist talks about the Menil an awful lot, but the plain truth is that we're damn proud to have a jewel like this in our city and you should be, too.
Bold words when the "they" you're referencing is Houston's Museum of Fine Art, arguably one of the best art museums in the country. But local surgeon Anthony Walter feels that the baroque masterpiece he's created in the great hall of his Southhampton home (built in 2004, natch) rivals -- nay, obliterates -- the MFA's grand collection. Included in his 2,500 square foot masterpiece are gilded murals depicting his wife and various Biblical scenes, coffered ceilings, mother-of-pearl inlays and exactly 48,762 cubic zirconias. Museum-worthy? You can judge for yourself in this slideshow of Dr. Walter's work. (NY Times, via Swamplot)
a great idea. But why go through the endless hours of knitting an ill-fitting sweater when you could give handmade art instead. You aren't a very good artist? Well, that don't matta, it's the thought that counts. And besides, practice makes perfect, which is why you should attend Dr. Sketchy this Sunday.
Houstonist ventured downtown on Saturday afternoon to enjoy the dazzling artistic talent on display at Via Colori, along with what seemed like half of the city. Benefiting the Center for Hearing and Speech, the third annual Via Colori showcased the amazing talents of local artists while raising money to help teach Houston-area hearing-impaired children learn to speak instead of relying solely upon sign language.
You may have noticed that Google's masthead is different today. That, in and of itself, isn't noteworthy; Google routinely changes their masthead to celebrate a variety of holidays -- recognized or not -- and sometimes just on a whim. But if you're wondering about today's masthead design with the iconic green apple and man in a bowler hat, let Houstonist illuminate you.

Eli Sebastian Brumbaugh, 23, is the youngest board member of ArtStorm, but not by much. The average age of the eight board members hovers around 30, and everyone but Brumbaugh attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts here in Houston. After leaving to attend college in other well known art cities like San Francisco and New York, founder Melissa Juvan returned to Houston to develop the art community here. In ArtStorm, Melissa and the other board members have created an accessible space "By Artists, For Artists" dedicated to showing established and up-and-coming local artists.
Wherever you may be headed tonight, make sure to at least do a fly-by at the Contemporary Arts Museum so you don't kick yourself later for missing Steel Lounge Underground.
The clap of the hands, the sounds of dancing and the mystical flamenco guitar all await you upstairs at Avant Garden tonight at 8pm.
We first wrote about Glass Candy last November. If you went to the show, you probably burned a hole in the sole of your shoes when what should have been a show turned into a synth-fueled dance party.

What is art? Is it a French impressionist oil painting or is it a good book? A couple of local art students suggest that the answer might be more metaphysical than, say a (highly) interperative dance or a chocolate Jesus sculpture.
