For once, this week's music calendar is light on local acts, heavy on touring acts. Tonight, catch classic crooner Tony Bennett (who turns 80 this year) at Jones Hall. Tomorrow night, we recommend California indie rock band Rocco Deluca & the Burden at Warehouse Live. Mix things up a little bit Wednesday night and catch Austin's Belleville Outfit at the Duck, combining jazz, swing and Americana. Houston's own R&B legend Archie Bell will "tighten...

Last night, Warehouse Live played host to the annual Houston Press Music Awards. Houstonist was there to absorb all of the entertainment and was treated to some of the best local music around. Other performers included Million Year Dance...

Also, Houston's Arthur Yoria is celebrating the release of his new CD at Rudyard's the same night. Other...

When you think of block parties, you usually thing of a cul-de-sac in a suburban neighborhood with hot dogs, red and white checkered table clothed over folding tables, annoying neighbors drinking their Miller Lite while they scream at their kids. Put those thoughts behind you – the Westheimer Block Party is totally different, and much better. Think of a block party in the Montrose area, the heart of Houston, with over 40 local bands playing....

This year's music line-up for April's International Festival has been announced. It includes some alt.country, funk, blues, reggae, folk, cajun, and traditional African music. So what's this year's theme? You guessed it: China. Actually, the folks at iFest are good about booking a diverse array of musicians, no matter what the theme is. Houstonist caught up with him for some coffee at Café Brasil (where he plays live tonight). You’ve been compared to...

Some sad news for music lovers came over the weekend, when we learned that Cactus Music & Video is scheduled to shut its doors for good at the end of March. Cactus has been in operation for over 30 years and is the largest independent record store in Houston. The decision came not because of sluggish sales (although, we all know that CD sales are slipping while digital sales continue to boom), but because...
