After assistant head coach Mike Sherman left the Texans for College Station and the Texas A&M job, Texans head coach Gary Kubiak was tasked with finding a replacement for the architect of his offense. Though Kubes is himself a former offensive coordinator, he's made a practice of surrounding himself with other top-tier assistants ever since he took the Texans job.
Texans DT Cedric Killings, who was almost paralyzed during Sunday's game against the Colts, arrived at the Texans practice facility yesterday, not to work out with his teammates, but to show them something none of them had expected: he was walking. A full recovery from the fractured vertebrae he suffered while attempting a tackle is expected, and he wanted the team to join in his celebration. Surgeons at Methodist Hospital stabilized Killings soon after the...
Craig Biggio's final weekend as an Astros player will feature a particularly fun blast from the past. Biggio, who has played catcher, second base, and several outfield positions throughout his 20 year career in Houston, will catch the first two innings or so of Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves. The original plan had called for Biggio to be matched with ace Roy Oswalt, but Oswalt is skipping his final start of the season so...
Like a scene from the movie 300, the Houston Texans players have been dropping like flies. Injuries are starting to take a toll on the Texans who couldn’t make it three in a row to start the season and no longer share first place in the division after losing 30 to 24 to the Indianapolis Colts Sunday. Jerome Mathis returned the opening kickoff 84 yards to start the game with the lead, but the Texans...

Good morning, Houston. How many of you knew what Monday was? Anyone? Anyone? That's right: It was the 220th anniversary of the signing of the United States Constitution. To mark the anniversary, the nation had a little holiday, Constitution Day — but how many people actually knew about it? Not many, apparently: Though federal law says students at public high schools should be taught about Constitution Day, a recent survey of students found that...

Houston Astros ace Roy Oswalt has been named to his third consecutive NL All-Star appearance. Oswalt, who is 7-5 with a 3.52 ERA, was summoned to replace injured Atlanta Braves pitcher John Smoltz. Oswalt, who was called up to the Astros in 2001, holds a lifetime record of 105-52 with a 3.09 ERA with a .669 winning percentage, best in the NL since that time. Oswalt led the NL in wins in '04 and...
The road to 3,000 hits the Bayou City starting today with a four-game set against the Colorado Rockies. And Craig Biggio is salivating at the opportunity to make history at home. Against the Rockies, Biggio owns a .347 average, the best of any opponent. On Tuesday against the Milwaukee Brewers, Biggio recorded career hit 2,997 against Claudio Vargas in the third inning; a single to left field. Biggio Fact of the Day: In 1987,...
So you've heard all the discussion about how cities must lure the so-called "creative class" if they want to be great places, right? Basically, the idea is that the creative class — knowledge workers, artists, intellectuals and creative types, a subset of workers identified by economist and author Richard Florida — spurs economic power, high-tech industry, new ideas and growth in places that court it. Sounds like something Houston should be trying to attract, right?...
In the environmentally-friendly department, Houston has some great news. UPS, the world's largest shipping carrier, will introduce big, brown hybrid trucks to four American cities, including Houston. The company said that they have 50 hybrid trucks ready to go in Dallas, Phoenix, and Atlanta (where the company is based), as well as our own fair city. The trucks will reduce UPS' fuel consumption by 44,000 gallons a year. UPS already has 20,000 low-emission and alternative-fuel...
The Clay Court Championships have ended their seven-year run at Westside Tennis Club, but the tournament won't be moving far - just down to River Oaks. USTA director of tournament operations Jim Curley was excited about the move: "Now that we're able to move it across town, if you will, it retains consistency in the marketplace. We love Houston as a tennis town." Other cities who were bidding for the event include Atlanta, Winston-Salem, NC,...
What's that? Surely you're not tired of hearing about where Houston ranks on this last and that list. And this list. And that list. Buck up and listen to this one. Falling just behind Washington DC, Atlanta, and Raleigh-Durham, Houston ranks fourth on Black Enterprise's list of the top cities for African-Americans. The cities were chosen from more than 2,000 user surveys on the magazine's website and the rankings are based on median household income, percentage of households earning more than $100,000, percentage of businesses owned, percentage of college graduates, unemployment rates, home loan rejections and homeownership rates. Sounds like pretty thorough criteria, and we're not surprised that Houston ranks high, considering the strength of our African-American community.
The Houston Texans needed to do something to improve their offensive production. It's no secret that David Carr's tenure as Texans quarterback was growing short. Yesterday, the Texans inked a deal with Matt Schaub and ended speculation about the quarterback situation. Signing Schaub, second fiddle to The Vick in Atlanta, completed the trade terms and effectively placed Carr on the trading block. Texans GM, Rick Smith, left little doubt as to their intentions during the...
David Carr's number may finally be up in Houston. NFL sources have comfirmed that the Houston Texans have agreed in principal to trade for the Atlanta Falcon's highly touted backup QB, Matt Schaub. Schuab, 25 out of the University of Virginia, has seen limited playing time over the course of his career taking a backseat to Michael Vick, the Falcon's number one overall pick in 2001. NFL teams in the past of expressed great...

Sweet Jesus, we can't believe that this video game actually exists. Granted, this entry from Electronic Arts and Def Jam is only the latest in the successful franchise, games in which famous hip hop artists duke it out in boxing and wrestling rings. It used to be a sort of wacky twist on the usual bout genre. But in Icon, these sorts of pretenses have been removed, and we are left with a straight-up...
City Council members on Wednesday approved a contract with EarthLink to build Houston's wireless Internet network, putting the city a step closer to having the nation's largest municipal Wi-Fi setup — or, as KHOU has apparently taken to calling it, a "wireless Internet bubble." (Not one, we hope, like this.)
A couple more details today on Houston's municipal Wi-Fi plan: According to the AP, pending City Council approval, Atlanta-based EarthLink Municipal Networks would spend $50 million to set up the 600-square-mile network, which will require 10,000 transmitters to be placed on light and utility poles (and, perhaps, rooftops) across the city. In short, it's going to be big, and Mayor Bill White didn't miss out on a chance to do a little bragging yesterday: Referring to other cities' wireless networks, he said, "You could put all their square miles, add them up and double, and you'll come up with about the square miles of the city of Houston that will be covered by the project." We feel so Houston proud. (The Chronicle's NewsWatch: City Hall has a podcast of yesterday's announcement and press conference on the proposal.)

We don't know about you, but it's friggin cold out there. Well, not for some of you. It seems as though places that are supposed to be cold are warm and places that are supposed to be warm are cold. Or maybe that's just us. Either way, we're freezing. Austinist said goodbye to their co-editor (sell-out) and played rumor monger on the SXSW lineup. Good news for you Texans fans planning to attend this weekend's game: The FBI said the threat to blow up seven NFL stadiums, including Reliant, was a hoax. The online threat, you'll remember, made the news Wednesday after the Homeland Security Department put local officials and stadium owners in the cities named in the threat — Atlanta, Cleveland, Houston, New York, Oakland, Miami and Seattle — on alert. But it turns out the bomb threat...
The Homeland Security Department has put officials and NFL stadium owners in seven U.S. cities, including Houston, on alert after a warning was posted online claiming that the cities' stadiums would be destroyed by dirty bombs this weekend — but the government says it's looking at the threat "with strong skepticism." The threat was posted Oct. 12 as part of an ongoing online conversation. It warned of attacks on NFL stadiums in Houston, Atlanta, New...
