As it seems most of the city's indie kids are still debating hipsters vs. hippies from last weekend's Summer Fest, we prepare to guide you into another weekend full of heat, music, art, and of course, f-f-f-fun.

If you've never been to Avant Garden, tonight's Flamenco Andaluz performance will be the perfect chance to experience the cozy and sultry atmosphere of this unique Houston venue. The regularly scheduled performances feature 2-3 dancers and live guitar accompaniment by Jorge Dahnke. If you're lucky and Joe is tending bar, be sure to order a Bloody Mary or one of his delectable shots.
Houstonist stopped at Avant Garden on Wednesday night to take in the memorial/benefit show for local musician Dave Rask, who passed away on June 18th. We were not direct friends with Rask, but had several friends in common and had seen him play a number of times. The show, coordinated by Dave's friends and family, was a rousing success, as Avant Garden was filled with people who chose to honor Rask in what seems a most fitting manner: putting on a fine show.

Avant Garden is not letting its reputation as headquarters for body-positive artsy seduction slide. The home of the monthly Dr. Sketchy life drawing class is hosting a new monthly event, starting tonight: The Moroccan Moon Belly Dance Show. The event will
celebrate dance as women's art in all its forms. Featured performers include The Graceful Gabriela, Our Beloved Patsy, Jenna Ali Nari of L'imprevu Bellydance, The Stunning Sarea Sirena of the Sisters of Avalon, Elizabeth of the Desert Orchids, The Talented Tammy, and Giselle.Poor Giselle. a great idea. But why go through the endless hours of knitting an ill-fitting sweater when you could give handmade art instead. You aren't a very good artist? Well, that don't matta, it's the thought that counts. And besides, practice makes perfect, which is why you should attend Dr. Sketchy this Sunday.
The clap of the hands, the sounds of dancing and the mystical flamenco guitar all await you upstairs at Avant Garden tonight at 8pm.
It's March now; the freakish weather is in full effect and your allergies are making you wish the spring was a figment of your imagination. What better way to celebrate than to go outside?
If good wine and hot artists make you feel warm and fuzzy, you should get yourself over to Avant Garden (411 Westheimer) tonight and mix, mingle and gawk for the closing of the Neoformalism1 show, curated by Ashley MacLean.
Tomorrow night, you should check out local favorites The Mathletes last show of the year (already?). They headline the line-up at The Proletariat. Another local favorite, Orange Is In, hits Rudyard’s Saturday night. Tuesday night sees the arrival of the Foo Fighters at the Toyota Center. If that venue is a little too big for you, check out actor/singer/songwriter Jeff Daniels at the Mucky Duck the same night.
We recently told you about Dr. Sketchy and that they were having their first event this past Sunday at Avant Garden. Well, in true Houstonist fashion, we showed up to see what all the hype was about and had a blast while we were there. Billed as an anti-art school, Dr. Sketchy Houston provides models, a DJ, a cash bar, room to draw, prizes and all the fun, you provide the cover to get in, your own art supplies (or you can pick up their supplies for a nominal fee) and a little bit of talent. Dr. Sketchy brought in model and Concrete Rose Cabaret dancer, Ann Berlin for their first session. Look for Dr. Sketchy Houston to provide these events once a month and if you like to draw, come on out and have some fun!
We're not going to beat around the bush here: we can't draw. Not a bit. It's embarrassing. The last time that our artwork was recognized as quality was in fifth grade, when we took 3rd place in a Rodeo-themed art contest with a crayon drawing of a ghost town. Really. But would we miss the opportunity to pick up a pencil and start sketching if it meant it was in a cabaret atmosphere? Aww, hell naw.
A lighter week for concerts, but many home-state bred musicians are in town. Tomorrow night, we recommend San Antonio's Girl In A Coma, but if you prefer 90's rock, you might want to catch Dallas' The Toadies return to Verizon Wireless. Speaking of returns, Bandera's Robert Earl Keen brings his annual Christmas show to town Friday night. Saturday, Warehouse Live is hosting a few local bands, headlined by Million Year Dance. Not from Texas,...
Spent all your cash on girlie drinks and shattered dreams again this weekend, didn't you? No worries - Thriftster gives you the lowdown on cheap stuff to do until Paycheck Friday. Thanksgiving Thriftsters are sexy. Happy Turkey Week! Monday: You're going to have a long week of family time, ambrosia salad and tryptophan sluggishness, so pace yourself with a free Monday night movie at Domy Bookstore (1709 Westheimer). While not completely seasonally appropriate (or is...
::Wine and Dine with Two Star Symphony at Avant Garden:: Tonight is your last chance to catch Wine and Dine Thursdays with Two Star Symphony at AvantGarden. AvantGarden presents fine wines from different regions of the world. Experience samples of delicately crafted wines, from...
The day was sunny with very few clouds overhead. The music was local and there was lots of it. Over fifty bands were scheduled to perform in the span of about nine hours at three locations with five stages and the block party fans came out in force to soak up the sun and music. There were artists, creating and selling art, there were art installations, a smattering of food and merchandise vendors. There was...
Westheimer Road is a long, thriving, paved snake of potholed infrastructure. It guides you into town from the Grand Parkway through Beltway 8 and Loop 610 until it brings you all the way into a cozy, little enclave of town we lovingly refer to as The Montrose. Not really the heart of Houston, because that would probably be the Medical Center, but more like the liver or one of the kidneys of Houston as...
The big show this week, of course, is the reunion of The Police. But if you don’t feel like paying $100 to see Sting sing songs he sings at his solo concerts too (OK, yes, it’s different since Summers and Copeland are with him, but is it that different?), then you can opt for some other good shows Friday night: singer/songwriter Radney Foster (now writing hits for other people) plays two shows at the...
