We at Houstonist are pretty tired of this foggy weather. Cold we can deal with, but the fog just makes everything kinda depressing. So as we head into the weekend, we need a shot (of booze) in the arm.

Given that there are jackasses determined to tear down all the old homes along Heights Boulevard, we figured it wouldn't be a bad idea to give you a way to protect a little bit of the Boulevard's history — all it takes is an appreciation for beautiful homes and a pretty good chunk of change. Start checking under the couch cushions now! This restored Heights Boulevard home was built around 1905 (not in 1929,... more ›

So all day yesterday, we heard people complaining about about the Harris County commissioners' proposal to raise the cost of using the county toll road system — and we even added our two cents. But is the rate increase a done deal? No, according to KHOU, which reports that commissioners approved a "toll-setting policy" on Tuesday, with the actual toll increase decision still to come in another vote. Or yes, according to KTRK, which says... more ›

Good morning, Houston. Did you feel particularly down in the dumps yesterday? There's a good reason for it, according to Dr. Cliff Arnal, a psychologist at Cardiff University: Arnal has named Jan. 22 the most depressing day of the year, what with the gloomy weather, post-holiday bills and failed new year's resolutions. But here's a reason to cheer back up: Today is National Pie Day! If anyone needs us, you know where we'll be... more ›

Instant karma can be rough sometimes: Take, for example, the man who was killed last night while trying to run away from a hit-and-run accident he reportedly caused. It happened at about 11:30 p.m. on Telephone Road in southeast Houston, where a pickup truck rear-ended an SUV stopped at a red light. The pickup drove off and a witness in another vehicle followed it to the South Loop, where the pickup driver and a passenger... more ›

After Tropical Storm Allison flooded neighborhoods that had never flooded before, officials decided it might not be a bad idea to redraw Harris County flood plain maps — and now, after three years of work, the new maps are out. Sure, big deal, right? Well, yeah, if you live in or own one of the 10,000 structures that have been added to the flood plain, it could be a pretty big thing. more ›

Wow, this is kind of unfortunate. And gross, in a way: A Sugar Land woman is set to get medical treatment after coming into contact with a rabid bat. According to officials, the woman found the bat Oct. 28 outside of a home in the 1700 block of Country Club. They said she touched the bat while sitting in her front yard, put the bat into a box with a stick. And then that stick... more ›

Remember how Mayor Bill White's anti-panhandling campaign began yesterday? Well, you weren't the only one to notice (if you did notice, that is): In a bizarre move, a homeless guy e-mailed KHOU and said the mayor's push for Houstonians to donate to social service agencies is a bad idea. The homeless guy is Randi Laird: “The mayor says if you want to give, give to the Coalition for the Homeless. Well the Coalition has no... more ›

The big problem is sustainability and Houston are a tough mix. Houston's patented Everything-is-Bigger-in-Texas sprawl makes northern style population centers and public transit fairly untenable, and our sauna-like environment makes programs like the garden roofing subsidies in Chicago and Portland (both in the top five) a bad idea. But according to WorldChanging, the biggest problem might be ignorance, or just a lack of conversation. Its a big problem, but not so big that some innovative community action couldn't handle it. Houstonist's idea? Big freaking biodome. more ›

So if you're planning to get involved in a police chase, we have a tip for you: Make sure your car doesn't break down while you're running. That's what happened this weekend, when a suspect ran from police after they tried to pull him over for having expired license plates: more ›

Last night Mayor White, Richard Lewis (the city's Chief Information Officer... not that other guy) and the High Tech Texan hosted a conference call for bloggers about the city's plan for a city-wide 802.11g wireless network. A conference call with bloggers? It isn't a bad idea, considering the technology, though some have noted the call's shortcomings. We just want to point out that Laurence Simon didn't have the hairballs to admit he was from isfullofcrap.com,... more ›

The price of gas in Texas is up 10 cents this week, making Houstonist start to think that it might not be such a bad idea to start a private gas stockpile. According to the weekly AAA Texas gas price survey, the average cost of a gallon of self-serve gas in Texas is $2.83, the same as the national average. It's up 71 cents over this time last year. According to HoustonGasPrices.com, the cheapest gallon... more ›

In Gavleston County, a jail guard could be fired for putting his 13-year-old nephew in a cell with a capital murder suspect — oh, was that a bad idea? more ›

Houstonist found the holiday spirit Friday night at the opening of the Holiday Lights in Hermann Park. The city and the Hermann Park Conservancy have ringed the park's reflecting pool (above) and McGovern Lake with displays of lights; even the pedal boats are decorated. If that's not enough to get you feeling merry, the park is also dotted with speakers blasting Christmas favorites from the likes of Ella Fitzgerald and der Bingle. more ›
