The Bald Heretic had an interesting bit of doorspam this week. The spammers didn't want to trim his trees or sell him pizza though. They wanted him to worship with them.. at Tinseltown. Apparently, a local church left a flyer on his door that said first-time visitors to Celebration Worship (10:15 Sundays at the not-so-safe Tinseltown Westchase, if you're interested) with Church at the Cross receive a free movie ticket. We wonder what movie they'll...
Trying to Change the World... One Blog at a Time picked up on a story that Houstonist wrote about yesterday: three HISD schools that were in jeopardy of being shut down. He raised a lot of the perennial good points about the problems with public education in America and increasing class stratification and questioned the notion that underperforming schools should be shut down. A good, thoughtful post from one of Houstonist's favorite readers and local...
Local tech news in a compact, digital format. Tracking Down Stolen Laptops Police are using a lo-jack type system for tracking down stolen laptops. The system alerts police when a laptop is stolen and the article states that some PC's have been found as far away as Africa! More on this from abc13.com. Astros fans are used to the "Hey, things could be worse" mentality. When playing .500 ball is about as good as it's gotten all season, it's nice to look at teams who have dug much deeper holes for themselves and say, "Thank God I'm not from Kansas City." Houston's Clear Thinkers had an interesting post this week that, instead of complaining about the Astros, highlighted the consistent failure of the Royals. We're not here to...

Wherefore art thou, Radar? This week KPRC dumped the lovable weather dog (sending Ken Hoffman into a tizzy, no doubt), and the mikemcguff blog chronicled it for us. Radar is moving on to bigger things though: he'll become the mascot for the John C. Freeman Weather Museum. The best part of this blog post is the speculation about Radar's uncontrollable barking during newscasts and the jealousy stewing in the hearts of KPRC anchors. We'll miss...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor The Bald Heretic. Taken on the 3700 block of Main Street, this photo captures an area with some great hangouts. On the corner of this photo is Julia's Bistro, next to it The Mink, next to it Shoeshine Charlie's Big Top, next to it Sig's Lagoon, next to it Taco's A Go-Go and at the other corner of the block is...

No matter your stance on NAFTA (Houstonist is of two minds when it comes to the 27% duty on softwood) the importing of Canadian music is a fine, fine thing, be it your New Pornographers, Arcade Fires, or Social Scenes of the Broken variety. So its with great excitement that we're telling you that the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in association with Starbucks, are bringing Chromeo, Montreal's greatest disco/funk/breakdancing mannequin band ever, to Houston....
After the huge success of their Beats of Basquiat series earlier this year, the MFAH, in association with Starbucks, presents the Mixed Media Music Series this Saturday night at the Audrey Jones Beck Building. Celebrate the launch of the highly anticipated new exhibit, Gee's Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt, with booze, free Starbucks coffee, and some hip hop music courtesy of LA's own Breakestra and a slew of Houstonian DJs. It will be one of the few chances you'll have all year to breakdance in a high art establishment, which is to say nothing of it also being the social event of the summer. Admission is free for museum members, $5 for students (with ID, natch,) and $10 for everyone else.
