Barbecue Inn, located on W. Crosstimbers at Yale has been serving up home cooked diner fare since 1946. Houstonist had to pay them a visit, as we were told that the fried chicken was "to die". We're not just taking anyone's word on it - we have to find out for our ownselves (it's a sacrifice, but, one we are willing to make). While waiting for our table, we chatted up the hostess, who let us know that the barbecue is good, but, the fried chicken and seafood were the real show-stoppers. The official suggestion was "If you get the fried chicken, you just have to order about three fried shrimp with it. They are the best in town.", or something similar to that. No lie, those shrimp were way better than ALMOST as good as Houstonist Mama's, or so we would have her believe. more ›

Upscale Barbecue. Sounds like an oxymoron, right? BBQ, the real sport that precedes major sporting events, the Five Elements (Brisket, Link, Beans, Tater Salad, Sauce), the food group that evolved out of the simple necessity of cattle drives: surely it can't be froofy without ceasing to be bbq. Monica Pope, proprietor and mastermind behind the beloved t'afia, decided to see if she could make the two words fit together in a converted icehouse in the Sixth Ward. The result was Beaver's. But does Beaver's live up to its founder's reputation and its own surprising goal? more ›

This Wednesday alt. rock band Ween will be in town performing at Warehouse live – and we have a pair of tickets, just for you. Ween was founded in 1984 and despite not having major “radio-play” success, Ween has a large and devoted fansbase. LAist was comped front row seats by the Dodgers due to Malingering being struck by a foul ball last week, and she came back with some great photos, and earlier made fun of 4th of July on Venice Beach. But the biggest stories of the week was that the Mayor's Hot Tamale was revealed, and that a Kwik-E-Mart was erected in Burbank. Phillyist was busy doing the Fourth of July up right, exercising their... more ›

Good morning, Houston. In place of the usual Morning Roundup, we've decided to offer you some good, all-American July 4 information to begin your holiday. And ours — we're taking the day off to spend with our families and friends, as we hope you are (you may see a few posts today, but we'll get back to our usual schedule tomorrow). Before we head out, though, did you know: There are 30 places in... more ›

What with Paris Hilton's release earlier this week and the upcoming celebration of American Independence (sorry, Londonist!), we've been thinking a lot about freedom. Freedom to vote, freedom to choose, and most importantly, freedom to blog. Here are a few things we're happy we've been free to blog about this week. Being the nation's capital, DCist felt especially proud to let freedom ring this week by exposing the really important issues, like how sad they... more ›

Tucked away in a small lot, between tiny parcels of tilled fields and across the street from grazing cows and Hieden Feed & Supply, lies a tiny white house with a neon "Open" sign and an old screen door. This little building had been an eating establishment for several decades before it became Tree's Cafe (named after the owner). Tree told us he took over the place after an older relative had been running... more ›

This morning, the Chronicle has more details from the Tynesha Stewart murder case — and if you thought the story couldn't have been more gruesome, think again. According to witness statements used in a search warrant request for confessed killer Timothy Wayne Shepherd's apartment, Shepherd once said that he "would boil someone and eat them." That hits pretty close to home, considering that police say Shepherd destroyed Stewart's dismembered body parts on barbecue grills. So... more ›

A group of activists held a press conference yesterday demanding a search for murdered A&M student Tynesha Stewart's remains — despite Stewart's family's request that a search not be conducted. "We respect the wishes of the family, but we too are a family and we too have been traumatized by the rollercoaster that we, the community and the greater public have been put upon — not only by the heinousness of the crime that has... more ›

Some developments in the murder of Tynesha Stewart, the 19-year-old Texas A&M student whose ex-boyfriend says he strangled her, dismembered her body and then incinerated the body parts on two barbecue grills outside his apartment: Harris County sheriff's investigators returned to confessed killer Timothy Wayne Shepherd's apartment to look for forensic evidence yesterday. According to KHOU, police removed some items from the apartment, including what seemed to be a roll of carpet, and they used... more ›

A series of developments and twists over the weekend brought the case of murdered Texas A&M student Tynesha Stewart to a grisly point: Investigators said there would definitely be no search for her remains because there aren't any remains to be found. "There are no remaining body parts," Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas said in a news conference Saturday night. "We have determined through this investigation that the defendant dismembered the victim and burned her... more ›

Good morning, Houston. If you live anywhere along the proposed University light rail line, here are a couple of chances to express your opinion on the choo-choo, pro or con: Metro will hold public meetings today and tomorrow. The first, from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, will be at the Renaissance Hotel at Greenway for folks along the west end of the line (between West Alabama, Main Street/Wheeler Station, Bissonnet and the Hillcroft Transit... more ›

Good morning, Houston! Sure, you might have had some bad experiences on the bus when you were in school, but we're willing to bet your bus driver never passed out at the wheel like one did in Magnolia yesterday. The driver had just dropped a student off on FM 1488 when she passed out; fortunately, a 9-year-old passenger called 911 on his cell phone and got help. Looks like the driver had a heart... more ›

Astros management has signed one-year deals with the capricious Jason Lane for $1.05 million and infielder-extraordinaire Adam Everett for $2.8 million, leaving Morgan Ensberg the only remaining unsigned arbitration-eligible player. We like chanting "Let's go Mo!" when we attend games, so let's hope this one gets taken care of soon. OK, we've signed Jason Lane, but where will he play? It sounds like Luke Scott might run away with right field, potentially leaving Jason Lane... more ›

The thing about Thai food is that it’s supposed to be a party in your mouth. Sweet flavors battle salty. Sour tastes balance the heat from the chili peppers. During a trip to Thailand, the Houstonist didn’t consider a meal successful unless we were sweating from the chili spices and dizzy with the contrast in flavors. Here in our diverse city of Houston, we’ve had some trouble finding unabashed Thai cuisine – flavors that are... more ›

Houstonist had to get our "burger on" after our first birthday party - had to. So, we phoned in some bacon cheeseburgers and rings for ourself and a co-worker from Pete's Fine Meats on Richmond Avenue. Normally, a "go burger" is kinda listless by the time you get to where you're going with it - this one was not super hot, but still warm enough and juicy. The onion rings were not homemade, however, they... more ›

If you haven't heard yet, the Pig Stand, the venerable Washington Avenue greasy spoon, has closed after 83 years of serving up burgers, onion rings, greasy breakfasts and sloppy Pig Sandwiches (pulled pork and barbecue sauce, if you didn't know). According to the San Antonio Express-News, the problem is rooted in back taxes: The Pig Stand chain has been in financial trouble since filing for bankruptcy reorganization last year, and now the state has... more ›

Did you play the lottery Saturday? Check your ticket — if your numbers were 10-27-42-43-47-52, you're $18 million dollars richer. Officials know someone picked those numbers on a ticket purchased at an Angleton convenience store, but they don't know who it was: The winner hasn't come forward yet. The winning ticket was bought at the Handi Plus gas station and store at Highway 288 and Highway 35. The store's owners, Shuju Feng and Xin Lu,... more ›

Houstonist made a botched burger attempt this past weekend at Guy's Meat Market. At first - we were sorely disappointed to learn that you can only get one of Guy's smoked burgers Tuesday - Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. (or - until they are gone). Rats. Well - that's a frenzied drive from work in the making - just to try one of the burgers billed as "one of the best". The... more ›

Even with the recent drops in the price of gas, it's still big news when you can get it cheap — which is why people get really excited when a gallon shows up for close to $2. That's what happened at a couple of stations at Yale and Crosstimbers yesterday: A Valero station at the intersection was selling gas for $2.16 a gallon, while it was going for $2.14 at a nearby Conoco. It's still... more ›

We spend a lot of time on the internet. And occasionally, we run across something about this city or the state it's in that we like enough to share. So if you've got reflections on anything from why you're a Houstonian-not-a-Texan to why it is nobody ever says "Don't Mess With Rhode Island" with a straight face, send them our way. We'll use them in our new occasional series, Read This. Lilit Marcus is a... more ›

Chess pie, a simple, custard-like creation, is an inexpensive and delicious finish to a summer barbecue (like the one we'll be attending on Labor Day). Here's Houstonist's tried-and-true version. Enjoy! (And check out the history of chess pie, too. Interesting.) 1 1/4 cups sugar 1/2 cup butter 3 well-beaten eggs 1 tablespoon white vinegar (it doesn't sound right, but it is, trust us) 1 teaspoon vanilla (preferably real vanilla; see Penzey's info below) 1 unbaked... more ›

Timothy Randle, one of the five suspects charged in a crime spree that left three people dead, is accused of three counts of capital murder — but he said from his jail cell Tuesday that police have it all wrong. Randle, 18, claims he was nearby when Maria Chrisalee Aparece and Huy Ngo were murdered, but he didn't do it. In a phone interview with KPRC, Randle said he followed other suspects who carjacked Aparece... more ›

In a dramatic courtroom moment, Maria Chrisalee Aparece's uncle lunged at the man police say pulled the trigger in her murder during a hearing this morning in which five people were charged in connection with the deaths of Aparece, 23, and 17-year-old Huy Ngo. It was the first time Aparece's family has come in contact with Dexter Johnson, the 18-year-old who was arrested last week, and seeing Johnson was apparently too much for Irvin Aparece.... more ›

It's rodeo time again — the one weekend in the year when we can gorge ourselves on barbecue and beer, then head across the Astrodome parking lot for a spin on the Tilt-a-Whirl. (Wait, the one weekend? We take that back — that's pretty much a weekly activity for Houstonist.) So here's what's happening this weekend at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo: Thursday • World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest: 5 to 11 p.m. at Reliant... more ›

Even though we hadn't been to AstroWorld in years, reading about the public auction of the theme park's stuff brought on a wave of nostalgia. We remember the hoopla when Ultra Twister debuted, the headaches from being banged around on the Texas Cyclone and the urban legends about the SkyScreamer going out of control and plunging into the little lake at its base. Ah, childhood. If you're missing the old times, too, you might want... more ›
