Daily-ist Tuesday: Biscuit with Jam

What's this? Another regular musical jam session? Yerp. This one's at The King Biscuit every Tuesday at 8 p.m. and features Danielle Reich's Jazz Trio along with a different special guest each week. Newbies and those looking to overcome their stage fright are also welcome to join. The sesh takes place in the bar area, but you can still hear the tunes from the wide-open comfort of King Biscuit's patio.

Washington Ave. nightlife update

There hasn't been much new to report since we heard about obnoxious club-goers leaving their mark along Washington Ave. near Sixth Ward, but locals down west on Washington are dealing with the same 'ol stuff. This beauty of a parking job comes from a residence near Ei8ht (clever!). I guess there aren't any ditches in the 'burbs..

Tomorrow is the biggest day in professional football: two sets of grown men in protective padding, brain buckets and tight pants will go head-to-head to see which is the best team in the nation. Whether you feel this to be the most spectacular sporting event, a good excuse to party like a rock star or you care less about it, but, you dig the commercials, most of the nation will be glued -- beverage in one hand, nacho in the other -- to the television.

Pandora's Box Is Leaking...

...all over Old Sixth Ward. This isn't your typical story of a changing neighborhood - while the area has always been home to a combination of residential, retail, and restaurants/bars (and its fair share of blight), current issues with the bars Pandora (1815 Washington Ave) and Drake (1902 Washington Ave) are taking it to an obnoxious and dangerous level. The management may be strict about getting in to the bars (dress, and sometimes ethnicity?), but once patrons leave anything goes.

As promised, Houstonist mingled with about 275 intrepid people who came out to experience their first Flavor Tripping party on Friday night at The Social. And although the lines were sometimes long to get in and to get at the food, people had a wonderful time tripping the night away.

Congratulations on not completely falling down on the job by exercising your right as an American citizen and voting today. But the fun's not over! You still have an entire night of talking heads, exhausting rhetoric and ceaseless exposition to look forward to as our nation chews the cud of the 2008 election until early morn. So instead of parking it on the couch and watching the overly-hairsprayed pundits on CNN and Fox News, why don't you head out and celebrate Election Night in style? We've got plenty of options for you, so get out there and keep on rocking that vote tonight.

Lucky's Pub has become the place for Houstonist’s pre and post Astros game hangout. Haven’t been there yet? Where ya’ been? Yeah, the ‘Stros may be hovering around last place in their division, but that’s no reason not to take in as many games as you can and have a good time, regardless of standings or the final score.

Can we interest you in the brisk salt air and the reassuring view of distant oil platforms in the Gulf with your beer? If so, you'll want to attend the next Saint Arnold pub crawl this Saturday, June 28th starting promptly at 4:00 p.m.

Many people are unaware that Planned Parenthood offers a variety of free or low-cost services to the local communities in which they operate, including yearly well-woman exams, healthy babies programs, breast cancer screenings, pap smears, cervical cancer treatments, access to all forms of birth control and educational information about men's and women's reproductive health.

It's that time of year again! No, not Christmas -- but close.

The Houston Rollerderby season ended in October, and Houstonist is having "DT's" - a condition in which lack of flat track action causes delusions (in which we actually think we CAN sing), nervous tic's and random verbal outbursts. We're gonna be just fine though, because there's Derbyoke in our immediate future - like tomorrow night! What is this "Derbyoke" of which we speak? Well, given that it's karaoke with, by and for HRD - it's like karaoke on steroids with cool chicks who can potentially kick your ass (at the mic, of course!). In addition to the singing part, there will be a silent auction featuring artwork from various skaters, drink specials all night, prizes and the chance to bid on your dream team (we have to check that out, it sounds like fantasy rollerderby?).

Christmas is a week away (great googlymoogly - we still have some last minute gifting to get) and if you had planned to have lots of different cookies on hand, or made up to take to your rotten coworkers, and haven't quite managed to bake, a lot. This is a super simple, very fun way to host a gathering, have a good excuse to get your nog on, and have a respectable assortment of goodies. First you plan a very simple, stress-free menu and drinks - anything from chicken n' dumplin's with a nice chilled white wine or some mulled wine/cider, to charcuterie and cheeses with luscious egg nog. You bake one batch of cookies and ask all of your guests to do the same. Everyone lays out their cookies on platters, and each guest can get a paper box with waxed paper, or even some cute brown paper bags with "zip top" plastic bags and share.

For everyone from the suckers who went to the sports bars because they thought the game was only on the NFL Network, to the lucky souls who knew that the game was on Channel 20, the confused folks who mistook the Texans red-on-red uniforms for a horrible laundry error, and to Channel 20 itself (which no doubt got their highest ratings since they ceased to be a UPN affiliate), the Texans thumping of the Broncos was a triumph in whatever context you found it.

::Flash Yo Stache at Vinyl Ranch:: It's back all you Urban Cowboys and Girls: Vinyl Ranch at Leon's Lounge. And this time a little twisted (at the edges). Tonight's 4th installment of the honky tonk party at Leon's Lounge brings a whole new level to the shindig. Local charity Mustaches For Kids will team up with Vinyl Ranch creator, Dave Wrangler, to create a meeting of the 'staches! How perfect is this? Be on...

Houstonist doesn't need an excuse for a party, but last night we had one: our second birthday. We got together with our readers and friends at Monsoon Wok downtown for a few drinks, a bit to nibble on and some amazing cake from The Acadian Bakers. Thanks to everyone who helped put the party together, and especially to everyone who showed up. By the way, we noticed a few of you taking photos. If...

::New Drink Tasting at Alden Hotel Lounge:: We're suckers for hotel bars. There's just something about being surrounded by out-of-towners and those foreign to the city, that makes us wanna swoop in to the fresh meat. Plus, it doesn't hurt that a bed is steps away. If in fact, the situation arises that you would need one. Join a+ lounge at the Alden Hotel today from 5-6pm as they let you test out the...

Do you find yourself a little scared to venture downtown these days, for fear of what you may or may not find? We'll admit, it's not out first pick for happy hour, what, with all the awesome parking opportunities and diverse bars, clubs, and retail? So we are looking forward to giving it a chance tonight, as ArtsHouston hosts a Meet & Greet (Hello, downtown, my name is ______) tonight at Butterfly High (705 Main...

In 2003, Detroit's Electric Six effectively made it okay for heterosexual males to sing about gay bars to fellow heterosexual males without opening the door for a sexual harassment lawsuit or nursing a bloody nose. Newly armed with their latest and release, I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me from Being the Master, Electric Six is ready to blow Houston's mind one more time. "I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me...
