After an extraordinarily embarrassing event wherein Houstonist unwittingly drove the wrong way down a portion of South Braeswood Boulevard, we decided to thoroughly investigate the nature, goals, and idiosyncrasies of the Braeswood Boulevards. Our results have been quite astonishing and maddening, as these braided hydra-like streets weave, change course, change names, and sometimes suddenly disappear for a portion of their overall path as though it were not no thang at all. Our ultimate aim...

Callaloo, among the top literary magazines in the country, is sending four writers (all faculty from Callaloo's Creative Writing Workshops) to read in Houston for one night only. Terrance Hayes, Mat Johnson, Tayari Jones, and Tracy K. Smith will give a public reading Thursday, August 16 at 6:00 p.m. at the Ensemble Theatre, located at 3535 Main Street. These four writers have won more than a dozen national awards and fellowships; they are at...

Good morning, Houston. If you've played the lottery, we're sure there have been times when you felt like you couldn't win — and you know what? Turns out you were right. In scratch-off games, the Texas Lottery may continue selling tickets even when almost all the prize money has been claimed, meaning tickets carry virtually no chance of winning. The DHS surveyed 75 U.S. cities, metro areas and territories for their emergency preparedness, including advanced, integrated communication...

Good week for a concert, for all genres: Tuesday Houstonist always likes to give kudos to our locals parading on the reality shows. Will Makar was one of those from last year's American Idol. While he didn't win last season, he still had a great run. The 17 year old is performing his first big Houston show at the Duck tonight. Video: "Bridge Over Troubled Water" (Live in the Woodlands) 7:30 p.m. at McGonigel's...

As Houstonist was looking back through the week's news, we found something we couldn't end the week without telling you about: the guy who was arrested in Galveston on Monday who was arrested for stealing cologne and pantyhose, which he hid in his pants. Police say the man, David Jackson Jr. of Baton Rouge, went into a Walgreens on Seawall Boulevard at about 8 p.m. Monday to report a fire in a trash can outside....
