As the 1980's began, Pearland was still a small town, where you could walk across the street to Dairy Queen for lunch in high school. It was also the time when the town produced their own little new wave band that would end up becoming a regional favorite: The Judy's.

Good morning, Houston. You might not remember it, but many local beaches used to be much wider than they are now — and soon, they'll be that wide again, thanks to a multimillion-dollar restoration project that's going to be announced today. The project will widen three miles of eroded beaches west of the Seawall in Galveston, Sylvan Beach in La Porte and other beaches in Surfside; the goal is to combat the erosion that's...

Remember earlier this year, when the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration began a probe into dozens of dead dolphins that had washed up on Southeast Texas beaches? Well, several months into the investigation, the NOAA hasn't figured out what killed the dolphins — and officials say they're unlikely to find an answer. Nearly 70 dolphins washed ashore on beaches in Galveston and Jefferson counties, at least 60 of them in March — a sharp upturn...

Good morning, Houston. 'Stros win! 'Stros win! Whooooooo! Ahem. Yes, well, as you probably know by now, the Astros beat the Cincinnati Reds 10-2 last night to end their 10-game losing streak. The game marked the highest run total for the 'Stros in three weeks, and the team's 16 hits matched their season high — not bad. "It was a fun night for everybody," Woody Williams told the AP. "I know it's one win,...

Well, this is unpleasant: According to KHOU, the runoff from the last few days' rain is washing fecal bacteria from the area into the Gulf of Mexico, posing a potential threat to swimmers. Though it won't kill anyone, the bacteria could make people pretty sick, so advisories have been posted at a few Galveston beaches: San Luis Resort Beach Plaza Shopping Center 60th Street Beach 57th Street Beach Fort Crockett Seawall Park West Fort...

Spring time in Texas and Easter is Sunday. Bluebonnets are blooming on the roadsides of Texas highways and hordes of partying co-eds are migrating to South Padre Island for Spring Break. The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration has launched a special investigation into the unusually high number of dead dolphins that have washed up on Southeast Texas beaches this year, the AP reports. We talked last week about the dolphin problem: As of last Tuesday, 35 bottlenose dolphins had washed up on Galveston County beaches since January, 26 of them in March. Overall, at least 60 dolphins have been found beached in Galveston and Jefferson counties...

Houstonist digs dolphins — no, not those — so we were sad to hear about the recent spate of dead dolphins washing up on Galveston County beaches lately. Thirty-five bottlenose dolphins have washed ashore since January, an estimated 26 of them in the last two weeks. "There were a lot of dolphins," a dispatcher for the Galveston County sheriff's office told The Galveston County Daily News. "They were coming in [Friday and Saturday], but the...

You may remember that last month our fair neighbor Galveston was in the news because of the perceived need to hire a marketing firm to revamp the city's image. North Star Destination Strategies out of Nashville, Tennessee was hired to try and persuade a few more folks to head south to the island. After conducting a few surveys and finding out that most thought of Galveston beaches as dirty, stinky cesspools of sorts, North Star...

Earlier this year, the City of Galveston hired outside marketing firm North Star Destination Strategies to help build a campaign that would attract more tourists and residents to the island. After months and months of research, the firm has now delivered campaign ideas and a suggestion to the city: change “Galveston” to “Galveston Island.” Man, that’s going to make singing Glen Campbell’s old hit a lot tougher. Along with the name change (something Missouri City...

All week, have you been longing for some little something that would gross you out just a little bit? Well, then, you're in luck, because we've got it: fecal bacteria at the beach. Yep, that's right: KHOU reports that this week's rains have washed all sorts of waste into the Gulf, and it's just hanging around out there, waiting for swimmers. The increased levels of fecal bacteria in coastal waters is caused by waste washing...

This has been a rough week for your -ist pals, though you wouldn't know it from the great posts all over the network. Plagued with server problems, our tech team (led by the great Neil Epstein) toiled around the clock to solve the glitches as they arose. Seriously, we've said, typed, and thought the phrase "server problems" more in the past week than we have for the last 35 years combined. Why not say it...

Ah, summer. Houstonist remembers the days when we actually got three months off from school to do whatever we wanted — usually watching a lot of TV, sleeping till 1 p.m., bumming around Galveston and pretending it had nice beaches. But we never remember setting fires like three teens in Katy are accused of doing. Police arrested the trio early Sunday morning as they left a nearly completed home in the 2100 block of Castle...

Visitors to Bolivar Peninsula may have to pay a $10 fee to park at the beach beginning this summer under a propsal being considered by the state. Revenue from sales of the $10 annual permits will go back into beach cleaning, security and goodies like portable toilets. And despite the fact that the plan has the support of the local chamber of commerce, some peninsula merchants aren't so sure it's a good thing:

Almost a week has passed since Christmas, and by now, your live Christmas tree is probably looking rather sad and dropping more needles than Keith Richards. You can keep that tree in the house and use it as a hat rack, but your friends and neighbors may stop visiting. Actually, that may be a good thing. Houstonist suggests the environmentally friendly alternative for dead trees – recycle them! The City of Houston will be accepting...
