We're still reeling from the success of our first annual Houstonist photo show opening. Can ya blame us? Just look at the evidence! It's no surprise that an event filled with such wonderful photographers produced such wonderful pics — please continue to upload yours to the Houstonist flickr group, and remember to tag with "600sqmi" and "houstonist." Of course this exhibit and opening didn't just appear out of thin air (geez, wouldn't that have been...

Triple Threat Edition So we couldn't decide on one event for tonight, so we're giving you three. We are so damn generous some times. Besides, this week has been so long we figured you needed an extra long Friday to make up for it. Well, of course there's the Txt Me L8r SPIN Party at HCP that we'll all be at. Two of your favorite Houstonist contributors (wait, you have favorites, right?) will be participating...

This week we were rewarded! Whoo-hoo! [The Deets] Find where art and music intersect on select Saturday nights at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. DJs spin and bands play against an arresting backdrop of...

Art lovers! Don't miss this fantastic exhibition currently at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. The MFAH was selected as the sole American museum to host a traveling exhibition of 135 of the most well-known works of art in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's substantial collection of 19th century European masterpieces. This was the first time many of the pieces had left the MET since their acquisition and it's not likely any will ever...
Salon Series features French Exhibit, French Films If you haven't made it to the MFA to view the Masterpieces of French Painting on loan from MET (um, whatcha waiting for?), this weekend's Salon Series would be a good time to get that taken care of before the exhibit leaves Houston on May 6th. On select Saturday evenings (beginning this weekend), Starbucks transforms the Audrey Jones Beck Building of the MFAH into a French Salon....
The Masterpieces of French Painting from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1800-1920, visits the MFA
On Tuesday, the American -ists will be celebrating democracy and hitting the polls, letting politicians know what they really think. It just made us wonder: if it were up to the -ist-a-verse, what would we be voting for? Londonist votes for better skincare, alternative spaces for art, cute little birds and the men who keep them, and concrete. Lots of concrete. Shanghaiist votes for one of the Bee Gees and Air Supply (it's a double-ticket),...
Even though he’s been recording for almost 30 years, most people don’t know who Daniel Johnston is. His profile was lifted a couple of years ago with the release of a tribute album, with artists like Beck, Death Cab for Cutie, Bright Eyes and Tom Waits covering his songs. The following year, a documentary of his life won an award at the Sundance festival. This year, Houston’s Infernal Bridegroom Productions created and performed a rock...
The great thing about being a grown up is that summer fun doesn't have to end at back to school. And since it still feels like summer anyway, have some summer fun, student style: (By which we mean costing as little as possible). Friday, August 25 Every summer, Theater Suburbia does what they call an "old-fashioned summer 'mellerdrammer'". Come boo the villain and cheer for the hero and the maiden fair in this year's offering,...
No matter your stance on NAFTA (Houstonist is of two minds when it comes to the 27% duty on softwood) the importing of Canadian music is a fine, fine thing, be it your New Pornographers, Arcade Fires, or Social Scenes of the Broken variety. So its with great excitement that we're telling you that the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in association with Starbucks, are bringing Chromeo, Montreal's greatest disco/funk/breakdancing mannequin band ever, to Houston....
You may have seen the chain restaurant Houlihan’s on a trip to the Midwest or Northeast. The restaurant/bar chain has remained very popular in that region, along with Florida and California. The chain has now announced a return to the Texas market, beginning in Austin, with plans to build a dozen restaurants around Houston and several in Dallas/Fort Worth. At first glance, Houlihan’s exterior looks like your typical TGI Friday’s or Bennigan’s. Do we really...
After the huge success of their Beats of Basquiat series earlier this year, the MFAH, in association with Starbucks, presents the Mixed Media Music Series this Saturday night at the Audrey Jones Beck Building. Celebrate the launch of the highly anticipated new exhibit, Gee's Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt, with booze, free Starbucks coffee, and some hip hop music courtesy of LA's own Breakestra and a slew of Houstonian DJs. It will be one of the few chances you'll have all year to breakdance in a high art establishment, which is to say nothing of it also being the social event of the summer. Admission is free for museum members, $5 for students (with ID, natch,) and $10 for everyone else.
The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has suspended its crackdown on drunks in bars while it investigates complaints from legislators and the public about how the program is run. The TABC stepped up arrests of intoxicated people in bars in September after the Legislature approved funding for 120 new TABC staff members, including 59 new agents, to help the agency decrease drunk driving. The idea was to keep people from being drunk in bars, which in...
Didn't Houstonist tell you that the state's crackdown on drunks in bars would change when it started affecting tourism? Ah, we were so right: The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission has announced it will conduct an internal investigation of the program and will start retraining officers. TABC spokeswoman Carolyn Beck said officers will continue to arrest exceedingly drunk people, but the commission is taking complaints — of which there have been many — seriously.
State lawmakers are planning to take another look at the crackdown on drunks in bars after public outcry over busts at 30 Dallas-area bars this month. And it does seem people are pretty ticked off about the whole thing:
