We've never been fans of the work week, but never has our Monday through Friday grind seemed so endless. Time has been creeping along since Monday when we tersely answered your questions about tomorrow's 2nd Annual Houstonist Crawfish boil. Now that it's nearly here we thought it prudent to fill-in a few more of the relative blanks.
There's trouble in Projectorville! Mr. Projector (Houston resident Aaron Ball) needs your help, so he's throwing a party at the Aurora Theater this Saturday.
Texas Girls For A Cure is throwing an 80's themed extravaganza benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Saturday, September 6 at the Caroline Collective. The party starts at 6:00 PM and will feature screenings of The Breakfast Club (8:00 PM) and Ferris Bueller's Day Off (10:00 PM).
Sunday, August 10th at Shakepeare Pub there's a benefit that plans to bust out into a full open mic jam. Beginning at 2 p.m., various bands will be playing as part of a benefit forLarry Lownote Johnson (bassist for John McVey) and his wife, Angela Highnote Johnson. Angela was involved in a near fatal accident when a drunk driver rear ended her vehicle and the insurance money is simply not enough. Most artists are "self-employed" and have either personal insurance or none at all. When tragedy strikes, it's time for the community to band together and help out. After all, we've heard the adages that "charity begins at home" and "it takes a village" - it's time to put some money where our mouth is. Admission to the benefit is free, there will be a raffle and food will be served, your donations are very appreciated.
If you prefer 90’s music over today’s, there are a few shows this week that’ll be right up your alley. Tomorrow night, Matchbook Twenty and Alanis Morisette play a sold out show at Toyota Center (MuteMath opens). For rap fans, check out Too $hort at the Meridian Friday night and Snoop Dogg returns with new material at Warehouse Live Saturday night. Finally, Marilyn Manson gives you an alternative to Sunday night church this weekend.
A lighter week for concerts, but many home-state bred musicians are in town. Tomorrow night, we recommend San Antonio's Girl In A Coma, but if you prefer 90's rock, you might want to catch Dallas' The Toadies return to Verizon Wireless. Speaking of returns, Bandera's Robert Earl Keen brings his annual Christmas show to town Friday night. Saturday, Warehouse Live is hosting a few local bands, headlined by Million Year Dance. Not from Texas,...
The Houston chapter of the Ferrari Club of America presented the Highland Village Ferrari Festival today resulting in even more of a log jam on Westheimer than the regularly scheduled crappy Sunday afternoon traffic. The event featured 20+ Ferraris (and one Maserati) on display with daydreaming music provided by a jazz trio. The Italian sports car maker was well represented by the fleet of automobiles on hand. Attendees could drool on F-40 (pictured above),...
Houston Roller Derby's Burlesque Brawlers are throwing down a great time at a cool location to raise some funds for the team (we keep telling you how costly those fishnets and stuff are - and the ladies do play this sport entirely on their own dime and receive no revenues). Beginning at 5:00 p.m. and lasting until you holler uncle, or the bar closes - you can hang out with the Burlesque Brawlers at Hans...
Good morning, Houston. Looks like the Legislature could be gearing up for a debate of Biblical proportions: state Rep. Warren Chisum (R-Pampa) has proposed a bill that would require public high schools to offer courses on the Old and New Testaments. Chisum said the courses, which would be electives, would focus on history and literature, bt critics worry that teachers' religious beliefs could seep into the classes and that certain historical perspectives — Catholic...
This Saturday Houston Ultimate Community (HUC) is hosting the Fifth Annual Huckin' for Laura tournament to benefit Houston Habitat for Humanity. Ultimate, as defined by the Ultimate Players Association, is: Player defined and controlled non-contact team sport played with a flying disc on a playing surface with end zones in which all actions are governed by the 'Spirit of the Game™. As defined by Houstonist, Ultimate is fun as hell and a great way to...
Jagshemash! Borat is a hit. It's getting rave reviews, grossing millions, and definitely the most quotable thing we've seen in ages. But Borat seems to have missed most of the -ist cities, and we were all wondering how the film would have been different if he'd made his way around the world on the -ist tour. In Shanghai, Borat would be observing Inane Learnings of Penis Photos for Make Benefit Glorious Flat World of...
As fall settles in and another calendar page gets turned, thoughts turn from bbq's and vacations to holidays and the realization that '06 is coming to an end. With all that going on, with change in the air, we wonder what is it that made that makes the -ists ponder? Phillyist is concerned that the war on Trans fats could affect it's beloved cheese steak sandwiches, something for which we should all be concerned....
God, we're so sick of Snakes on a Plane that we want to kill anyone and everyone that makes a "something on a something" joke. But then we realized that there was no way we could ever win this fight, and, hell, if you can't beat them, we might as well join them. And with that, you have the theme of this week's Gothamist network post. Austinist makes it easy for us, with Candidate...
Investigative reporter of both television and print, New York Times bestselling author, guy who leads investigations for governments ... is there anything Greg Palast doesn't do? This British journalist, who has produced a documentary on the Bush family also does fun stuff on his side of the pond, where he worked his way into British PM Tony Blair's inner circle...and promptly published a scandalous expose. His new book, Armed Madhouse, comes out this month, and...
Houstonist, as you might have guessed, loves Houston. And we think there's nothing better than people who love Houston, too, although a James Coney Island Combo 1 with chili-cheese fries comes in a close second — oops, sorry. We knew we should have eaten a bigger lunch. Anyway, if you're a Houston lover, too, why not join the Houstonist team? We're looking for people to keep up with Houston — news, sports, the arts, restaurants,...
