Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. I'm all for transportation by bike, but what's up with Houston bikers never observing stop signs and traffic lights? I almost run over and kill a biker every day, and it's always their fault. Maybe we need to add "bikes too!" to the bottom of every traffic sign and signal. -- Ophelia, Houston-upon-Avon Oh, Ophelia. You're missing the real problem with bicyclists: bike... more ›

This week, Phillyist saw the waters of a landmark fountain run red for a Showtime marketing stunt, the Phils pull ahead, and some serious nostalgia. They also got a chance to review an awesome tribute album, reminded folks to see the King and appreciated their beautiful skyline. Chicagoist knows what it's like to like the Cubs. But naming your kid Wrigley Fields? At least they can breathe a little easier now that Grossman's out and... more ›

Another banner week at Chicagoist started off with daily reports from food writer Lisa Shames on her attempt to eat only locally grown and raised foodstuffs all week as part of a farmers market... more ›

With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse. Luckily, even with all the things we have to do, we still managed to get together to let you know what we've all been up to. After cooling down from a hot weekend of many badass Sunset Junction Street Fair photo dispatches, LAist asked... more ›

We've covered a few distinctive thieves in the last few months: the cell phone bandit, the bicycle bandit, the dapper bandit, the bad hair bandit — and now there's a new one: the bossy bandit, who was reportedly quite rude when he knocked over a west Houston bank last week. According to FBI officials, the man walked into the Wells Fargo branch on the Katy Freeway near Highway 6 at around 5 p.m. last Tuesday;... more ›

Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on. This week, we told you all about the upcoming opening of the much talked about Hotel ZaZa in the Museum District. Seems like the new hotel is on everyone's radar. Including New York Magazine. This week, the popular entertainment and culture magazine's website (www.nymag.com) featured Houston as their Weekend Escape Destination, describing a stay at the "highly theatrical" Hotel ZaZa as a way to earn some street cred in the Bayou City. The article... more ›

Last year we talked about the shocking news that some folks go to Memorial Park for, uh, recreation of a different kind. No, really! And it's come up in the news a couple of times since then, but now we have a new twist: A city contract worker has been arrested for allegedly masturbating while driving around the park — while wearing his uniform. Smart. more ›

Five restaurants in southwest Houston, near Buffalo Speedway and 59, were burglarized yesterday morning by a thief who police are still searching for, according to KTRK. The crime spree began around 1:45 am yesterday and lasted only a few minutes. It also returned little reward - the unidentified burglar made off with a grand total of zero in cash. The man also made his getaway on a bicycle, which we hear is the preferred means of transportation for environmentally friendly burglars these days. more ›

March and April are two of the best months for weather in Houston, so it's a great time to try out bicycling to work. Of course, for a lot of people who live outside the loop (or, God forbid, Katy) and work downtown, this isn't an option. But if you live close enough, it’s a great way to get exercise, fresh air (sort of), save money on gas, and do something good for the environment. more ›

Delirious: An Archi-Arts Event at the Meridian For the last 86 years, Archi-Arts has been Houston's self-proclaimed "avant garde party." The party is a fundraiser for an annual student trip to Paris in the... more ›

Sprawled and traffic-clogged Houston isn't traditionally known as a bicycle-friendly city. BikeHouston is trying to change that, promoting bicycling as an alternate method of transportation, educating both bicyclists and motorists about bicycle safety, and lobbying the city to build more bicycle lanes and Metro to attach bicycle racks to the front of buses. BikeHouston’s annual meeting is tonight. There will be food, along with a talk by the Houston-Galveston Area Council’s Pedestrian-Bicycle Coordinator, Dan Raine.... more ›

Their brand of ska got many parties started throughout the 90's, whether they were playing a private party, Fitzgerald's, Continental Club, or the Buzzfest. They broke up five years ago, but have gotten back together for a reunion show tomorrow night at the Continental Club. It's a one time thing – you don't want to miss... more ›

Bank robbery, threatening note, getaway vehicle — yeah, we've heard it all before. But what made a robbery at the Wachovia branch at 235 W. 20th St. unusual was that the bandit arrived and fled on a bicycle. Yesterday afternoon, the man reportedly rode up to the bank on a bike, walked in, approached a teller and handed over a note demanding money and saying he was carrying a bomb. According to KHOU, "the robber... more ›

We know criminals, in general, aren't always the smartest people out there — hey, when you're trying to plan a crime of some kind, the pressure must be such that it's kind of hard to make really good decisions. That's the only explanation we can think of for the guy who robbed a Baytown bank yesterday and then made an unfortunate choice of getaway vehicles: a bicycle. more ›

So here's something you don't hear about every day: In Dickinson, a doctor is accused of randomly shooting a bicyclist from his car.
