A party is breaking out at The Big Top, in the 3700 block of Main Street. A birthday party for none other than the King of the Oldies, Allen Hill! Starting around 10:00 p.m. and lasting until 11:59 p.m., there will be a precursor to "the real deal" consisting of dancing and a fabulous musical performance by The Allen Oldies Band (we know it's fabulous because it always is, we can do that math).

Do you like Piña Coladas? Getting caught in the rain? Not into yoga? I'm sure you have a half a brain and with that half, you should head down to Shoeshine Charlie's Big Top on the 3700 block of Main to enjoy the smooth sounds of The Light Rock Express tonight.

One small block in Houston, one large music scene - especially this coming weekend. This event is not recommended for the faint of heart, new age-types or the extremely un-coordinated (there will be dancing, foolish, crazy, too-hip-to-care, dancing - hell, brang your uncoordinated ass on - we are bringing ours). Both local, both about the most fun you can have with your clothes on - tequila shots not recommended. Two local bands will be taking over the block, starting with Disco Expressions on Friday night. Yes, disco - bust out your polyester, bring on your wide collars and satin and stuff, get ready for some kung fu fighting and do the locomotion all the way to the Continental Club, from 10:00 p.m. until you don't have to go home, but cannot stay there - or 2:00 a.m., whichever comes first. Oh but wait, fans of music made popular WAY before 1980, there's more! Saturday, same bat time, The Allen Oldies Band (our personal favorite) will be cruisin' on over to The Big Top at 3712 Main for some delirious fun and general mayhem. Bring a penchant for peanut butter and your best good mashed potato moves, and some folding money for the bartender(ress). We double dog dare you to have a bad time at either show - just try, TRY!!!
The first week of the new year is a light one for concerts. Still, there are some gems on the calendar, especially if you like local or country music.
It was your typical Friday night on the 3700 block of Main. There were bands playing at both The Continental Club and Shoeshine Charley's Big Top Lounge, The Mink was minding its own business serving drinks and Tacos-A-Go-Go were catering to their usual crowd of taco munchers when the evening started to really get hot! Hot as in flaming barrel hot. Houstonist Flickr photo contributor and resident photographer for The Continental Club, Jay Lee caught this event as it happened and has full details on his blog.

Houston is getting some great leftovers from ACL Fest this week. Yesterday was Arctic Monkeys & Queens of the Stone Age. It is disappointing to note that the Kaiser Chiefs show for Wednesday has been cancelled. However, on Thursday we recommend going to check out Midlake at Numbers. A lot of great music on Friday – anywhere from local favorite Today Castillo to indie band Deerhoof opening for Bloc Party. Nothing better than curing a...
Happy Friday, Sports Fans! We are watching our Rice Owls kick off the NCAA College World Series. We are addicted to sports - local sports - all of them! Houston can be a sports heartbreak waiting to happen! Speaking of breaks (and we seriously, seriously hope there are none - we were there when Catazon suffered hers!) some flat track action is gonna bust out on Sunday at 6:00 p.m.! Come on out and get...
So, Houstonist has forewarned you about a couple of events this weekend, The Orange Show Extravaganza whch is occuring Saturday afternoon (props to reader BShirley - we were remiss) and the AIDS Walk 2007 on Sunday. The Orange Show is typically looking for helpers at it's events - even if it's free, it's still gotta go off without a hitch. Call them at 713.926.6368 to see if you can be more than a participant this...
It's a special edition of the Houstonist Flickr Photo of the Day. These photos are from our Light Rail Pub Crawl. Did you make it out? If so, you might be in one of these shots. If not, check out the photos to see what you missed. We had a great time Friday night. Our host and Houstonist staff member, Jason Bargas, took us to places along the MetroRail line. We stopped at The Flying...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor The Bald Heretic. Taken on the 3700 block of Main Street, this photo captures an area with some great hangouts. On the corner of this photo is Julia's Bistro, next to it The Mink, next to it Shoeshine Charlie's Big Top, next to it Sig's Lagoon, next to it Taco's A Go-Go and at the other corner of the block is...
A lot of local and regional shows this week. Galveston’s Mardi Gras begins this weekend, with lots of local bands on tap. You’ll also find some good jazz at Brasil and Kelvin Arms tomorrow night, and with Orange is In at Notsuoh Saturday night. Evan Dando and The Lemonheads are finally touring again, arriving in Clear Lake Thursday night. Saxophonist Boney James plays downtown on Saturday. Did we miss something? Let us know. Here’s...
Tonight's the night!!!! Yes indeedy, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the Houston Roller Derby girls will be in the 3700 block of Main Street at several of the very cool businesses, peddling, and signing, their calendars. It's like a treasure hunt - find the skater, get the autograph! So, it's almost but not quite, too late to get a really sweet gift, and have it autographed.
The folks over at the Houston Symphony are always good for a laugh and some great music. (The music you can hear for yourself — on the laugh part, you'll just have to trust Houstonist, as journalistic integrity forces us to disclose that we practically grew up backstage at Jones Hall. And the late, great concertmaster Ray Fliegel did a spot-on Donald Duck impression. Seriously, y'all.) Maybe the musicians won't be impersonating cartoon characters, but...
