If you see a lanky, red-bearded biker pedaling down I-10 in the next day or two, that’s A.J. Rowell, a passionate biker and fundraiser from North Carolina. So what’s he doing in Houston? Mostly just biking, in fact that’s pretty much all that A.J.’s done for the last six months on his trans-America bike tour. A.J. pushed off from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska on June 2nd with 90 pounds of gear strapped to his road...

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. I'm all for transportation by bike, but what's up with Houston bikers never observing stop signs and traffic lights? I almost run over and kill a biker every day, and it's always their fault. Maybe we need to add "bikes too!" to the bottom of every traffic sign and signal. -- Ophelia, Houston-upon-Avon Oh, Ophelia. You're missing the real problem with bicyclists: bike...
Houston Dynamo Hosts Bike Challenge Tomorrow Ever want to sit behind a sweaty, hot, soccer player while he pumps away at a stationary bike? Ok, well maybe that's just our dream. (At least the female persuasion of Houstonist.) Ok, so if that doesn't do it for you, how about some free Dynamo Playoff tickets? A little more your taste? Well tomorrow's our chance for both, and yours if you act quickly. Sign-ups for the 1st...
With unseasonable weather descending upon much of North America, schools getting ready to reconvene, and sports seasons getting exciting, it's a busy time of year for us here in the Ist-A-Verse. Luckily, even with all the things we have to do, we still managed to get together to let you know what we've all been up to. After cooling down from a hot weekend of many badass Sunset Junction Street Fair photo dispatches, LAist asked...

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor bunnyville.
The latest in urban plight: copper theft. HPD Captain Caesar Moore, who oversees the burglary and theft division, told KUHF that they see about 250 metal-related thefts a month. Oftentimes, the copper is stolen from air conditioning units at churches, and Moore explained how this typically goes down: Usually it's drug related. They'll steal an air conditioning unit, the metal out of it and they may get $40 up to $80 for the copper parts...
You might not have heard of Olivewood Cemetery, a black graveyard founded in the 1870s on land where freed slaves were once buried. Olivewood is still with us today, at 1300 Court St. (behind the Grocers Supply warehouse at Studemont and Hicks), but it's largely overgrown and forgotten — though it won't be for long if two groups vying to become its caretaker have their way. The question now, though, is which group will win...
Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on. In Gothamist's neck of the woods, they found out that many things are possible: A man caught a 40+ pound fish off the Rockaways and took it home on the subway. Graffiti...
This week's crop of Missed Connections seemed harmless enough, even sweet. But if you're Barnie's wife: 1. you may not want to read this & 2. how did you ever get used to spooning a large, purple polyester dinosaur?
National Bike Month is over, but the partying isn't. The Mayor's office and Bayou City Outdoors will give Bike Month one last hurrah this evening, and everyone is invited.
LAist is experimenting with blogging dates from J-Date, but finds the best men are found offline. Some date vicariously online and that is one reason why porn is big -- really freaking big -- so they ask if they should cover XXX since the heart of it lays in the city's San Fernando Valley. A writer grapples with her food porn photography obsession, another gets censored on Flickr, one gets scooped by the LA...
Good morning, Houston. If you're like Houstonist, you've watched those TV specials about the University of Tennessee's body farm with morbid interest — and you were morbidly interested when you heard that a similar facility was being planned for Texas State in San Marcos. But the plan keeps running into roadblocks, the latest of which is a concern that the buzzards the body farm would attract could affect airplanes on their way to the...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor slipshod snapshots. It's an action shot taken in Memorial Park. We dig the motion. Thanks for sharing this photo with us. If you have photos you'd like to share, join our Flickr Photo Group and send us a few, who knows, you could be the next Photo of the Day. We love new submissions. If you have a passion for Houston...
The consensus of people at an urban planning workshop on the Main Street corridor Monday? In short: It needs to be more urban. The Planning Partnership, a Toronto firm hired to create a development plan for Main Street, held the workshop, which was meant to get the public's input on how to guide future construction along the corridor. Because the MetroRail line is already in place and major buildings already stand along Main, planning will...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor karenhr. Continuing with our black and white theme brings us to this image, jaywalking. We know it's illegal and people do it anyway, but come on, right in front of HPD? That's just not smart. According to the caption from this photo, "a fairly large group of people were waiting patiently for the light to turn, this guy just strolls on...
Spend the Night on Blue Bayou Join the Buffalo Bayou Partnership tonight as they kick-off a year long series of stargazing, boat rides, storytelling and more along the Sabine-to-Bagby Promenade. The newest addition (and possibly our favorite) to the Buffalo Bayou hike and bike and trails, gives Houstonians multiple access points to bayou canoeing. The awarding-winning, and might we add, spectacular-looking, unique blue lighting creates a much needed outdoor friendly environment for nearby downtown,...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor inkoluv who used an amber filter to create this effect. Houstonist likes the freewheelin' attitude this photo exudes. Cruise on, inkoluv, cruise on... If you have a passion for Houston and photography, consider joining over 200 of Houston's best photographers in the Houstonist Flickr Photo Group. If Houstonist uses your photo for Photo Of The Day, submit it here....
March and April are two of the best months for weather in Houston, so it's a great time to try out bicycling to work. Of course, for a lot of people who live outside the loop (or, God forbid, Katy) and work downtown, this isn't an option. But if you live close enough, it’s a great way to get exercise, fresh air (sort of), save money on gas, and do something good for the environment.
Austinist gets arty with an interactive guide to SXSW, loved some local art galleries and a new art exhibit and lamented the possible loss of "Friday Night Lights" production to New Mexico. Bostonist was happy they finally found an Anna Nicole Smith connection to their fair city and that an Apple Store was opening up. They were less happy that new rules have been established limiting underage shows and that their Governor is spending...
This week was fairly calm on Missed Connections, with people missing each other in all the usual places: grocery stores (mostly Kroger), coffee shops (mostly Starbucks) and roadways (mostly the Hardy). If we missed one of your favorite MCs let us know in the comments.
Mayor Bill White, who just happens to be one of the fittest mayors in the country, officially announced the date of the 3rd annual Tour de Houston. The bike ride (sponsored by Guaranty Bank) will take place on Saturday, March 17th, beginning and ending downtown in front of City Hall.
Via Off the Kuff, it seems some residents along West Alabama are wondering when they're going to get their old street back — you know, the pre-Spur 527 reconstruction version, sans contraflow lane and with the old bike lanes back in place. Alabama between Spur 527 and Shepherd, you may remember, was reconfigured to better handle increased traffic expected while the spur and parts of the Southwest Freeway were under construction. Originally, the street had...

Bank robbery, threatening note, getaway vehicle — yeah, we've heard it all before. But what made a robbery at the Wachovia branch at 235 W. 20th St. unusual was that the bandit arrived and fled on a bicycle. Yesterday afternoon, the man reportedly rode up to the bank on a bike, walked in, approached a teller and handed over a note demanding money and saying he was carrying a bomb. According to KHOU, "the robber...
By far one of the weirdest news stories Houstonist has seen in a while is that of the woman who was the victim of a hit-and-run accident this weekend immediately after she might have been the victim of a hit-and-run accident. Doesn't make sense to you? Us either.
Seeing the Flickr photo of the day reminded us that the very cool ArtCrawl Houston happens this Saturday, and the "Parasol Project" is a part of it, as are The Elder Street Artists Lofts Studios. Houstonians are invited to walk or bike and explore the Artist Warehouse District. A free METRO bus ride is available to each major warehouse and maps are available at all participating warehouses. This event is open to the public, and FREE!
We checked our bank account today and had to fight the urge to pick up the phone and call mom and dad for a handout loan. Things are looking bleak our immediate financial future. Good thing there’s a big ass (free) party happening this weekend! It’s better known as the Westheimer Block Party.
OK, here's the situation: It's the Friday before Halloween you still ain't got no costume. Houstonist doesn't either. Defaulting to the standard the pimps-and-hookers costume theme of many parties is tempting us this late in the game. But, sometimes it's fun to take a break from your normal club attire and wear something original. Fortunately, Houstonist kicks ass at beer pong recovering from procrastination. We've been combing the InterWeb for about two minutes now. Here...
