Good morning, Houston. There's nothing quite like a building implosion to lift our spirits at the beginning of the week — if, of course, it's a building we won't miss. That happened to be the case with the Crowne Plaza hotel in the Medical Center, which was reduced to rubble Sunday; click the link for video from KHOU. (Be prepared to wait — there's a lot of buildup to the big moment in Channel...

Beginning today and running through Sunday - the party is ON in Galveston! It is time for the Lone Star Rally, one of the largest AMA sanctioned events anywhere. Where to start? There will be a humongous amount of activities going on, and stuff. We'll highlight a few and let you bang the link to the website for the full list. First, there will be the Leather and Lace Ball and Halloween Costume Party at...

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. I'm all for transportation by bike, but what's up with Houston bikers never observing stop signs and traffic lights? I almost run over and kill a biker every day, and it's always their fault. Maybe we need to add "bikes too!" to the bottom of every traffic sign and signal. -- Ophelia, Houston-upon-Avon Oh, Ophelia. You're missing the real problem with bicyclists: bike...

Calling all crafters, inventors, gearheads and crazy creatives - the ever-amusing Maker Faire wants YOU to show off your best projects, inventions and designs at Sunday's Maker Faire audition at the Houston Children's Museum (1500 Binz St). Confused? Maker Faire is: A two-day, family-friendly event that celebrates arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. It's for creative, resourceful folks who like to tinker and love to make things. We call them...

There was very little else for Londonist to be concerned with when the threat of a Tube strike became a very unpleasant reality. The inconvenience was extreme: there aren't many alternatives to the Tube in London despite the best efforts of the Londonist team to get everyone from A to B. Brighter news came in the form of the first ever female Yeoman Warder, or Beefeater as the position is more commonly known, and...

No, it's not a new adult film premiering at Aurora, its White Linen Night in the Heights, and it's back for it's 2nd coming. "Small town cool, in the center of the big city." This Saturday, Heights residents, and curious visitors from all across the city, descend upon one of Houston's fastest-growing art scenes for a celebration of culture and community. The annual event, now in its second year, focuses on art, galleries, retail, outdoor...

Banner week for SFist as the site's new editor introduced himself -- hooray for Brock! While the NY Times weighed in on SF's mayoral race, only SFist had the (insert tongue firmly into cheek) hard-hitting latest on candidate/activist Josh Wolf. Coverage of a protest vs. gentrification spawned a fantastic debate amongst SFist's readers. Finally, from the sublime to the ridiculous: video of a man that confused a Board of Supes meeting with "open mic...

National Bike Month is over, but the partying isn't. The Mayor's office and Bayou City Outdoors will give Bike Month one last hurrah this evening, and everyone is invited.

All across the Ist-A-Verse (or at least the American parts thereof), writers and editors are in the midst of enjoying their three-day weekend. But after the week we've all had, we feel like the break is not only needed, but deserved. Just look at everything we've been doing! Gothamist headed into the Memorial Day weekend with a number of tasks accomplished. They worried about Long Islanders giving New Yorkers a bad name. They tried...

Houstonist is proud of y'all for heating up the Missed Connections action this week. Holy schnikes! We haven't seen assertiveness like this since we got handcuffed to the Texas Table last week, but that's a whole nother story. Props to the "Didn't Know It Poets," too. Chicks on bikes are hot; desperation are not. Missed Connection i've never had - m4w I've been browsing the missed connection section for weeks and weeks thinking hmmmm,...

Most of the Missed Connections this week were such a treat. Some folks want to score at the Astros game while some lady parts are on display. And, bacon was stolen. Mmm, bacon.

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. There are two male penguins at Moody Gardens who are raising an abandoned penguin hatchling. Finally. New York has had its gay penguin celebrity couple for years now. It's about time we had one down here. Uh, you didn’t ask a question. Anyway, Dilettante was a bit behind the times on her penguin sexuality, so she googled “gay penguins” (without the quote marks)...

March and April are two of the best months for weather in Houston, so it's a great time to try out bicycling to work. Of course, for a lot of people who live outside the loop (or, God forbid, Katy) and work downtown, this isn't an option. But if you live close enough, it’s a great way to get exercise, fresh air (sort of), save money on gas, and do something good for the environment.

As the world holds its breath, teetering precariously on the cusp of the Super Bowl (well, at least in America), the wheels of the -ists keep on turning. Austinist was in a musical frame of mind as they listened to the new Shins album, updated the SXSW band listings and got called "punk rock" for their efforts by MTV. And an ice storm swept through the area. Bostonist said goodbye to John Kerry's plans...

As 2006 ends and 2007 begins, the -ists look back not at the past week, but at the past year. So here it is, your Best of 2006 Spectacular. And from all of us at the -ists, happy New Year! Austinist was all about controversy as new construction to increase urban density ran rampant in 2006, as did threats to the city's image from gigantic corporations looking to set up shop in town, leading...

The 8-foot-tall, $150 carousel was taken from the yard of a house on Estelle Street in the East End. "We took almost three days to put all this stuff up, and now it just took 20 minutes and it's gone," Mike Luna, who lives at the house, said. According to KTRK, Luna figures it took about 20 minutes "for two guys on bikes to sneak into [his] yard and steal part of Christmas." Which is fine and all, but we're not sure how guys on bikes could possibly make off with an 8-foot-tall carousel. But whatever.

OK, here's the situation: It's the Friday before Halloween you still ain't got no costume. Houstonist doesn't either. Defaulting to the standard the pimps-and-hookers costume theme of many parties is tempting us this late in the game. But, sometimes it's fun to take a break from your normal club attire and wear something original. Fortunately, Houstonist kicks ass at beer pong recovering from procrastination. We've been combing the InterWeb for about two minutes now. Here...

If Houstonist ever decides to retire from the blogging business, we think we might spend the rest of our days compiling books of life rules we've learned from watching the news in Houston. You know, like if you're carrying two tons of pot, make sure all the lights on your vehicle are in working order and if you're looking for a lost dog, don't look in Pearland. And today, we can add another: If you happen to be driving around in the buff, it's not a good idea to get out of your car to retrieve something from the trunk. At least not in front of kids.

As fall settles in and another calendar page gets turned, thoughts turn from bbq's and vacations to holidays and the realization that '06 is coming to an end. With all that going on, with change in the air, we wonder what is it that made that makes the -ists ponder? Phillyist is concerned that the war on Trans fats could affect it's beloved cheese steak sandwiches, something for which we should all be concerned....

It's not that we're trying to be brief, but this week's Missed Connections really speak for themselves.

The Chronicle checks in today on a slew of city ordinances that seem to be going largely — or totally — unenforced, including a ban put into effect last year on "pocket bikes," quick little motorcycles that councilmembers said were a nuisance and a hazard. Though riding the cycles on public streets was already illegal, City Council spent three meetings and hours of debate before passing an ordinance banning them in May 2005, a move...

Hey, have y'all been using our new "Recommend this" feature at the bottom of each post? This week we're bringing you the "Most Recommended" posts from across the -ist world, as well as recommending some of our own. Phillyist thinks that readers recommended this post the most because "most of our quieter readers (probably) agree with us that rude commenting sucks." Know what else sucks? Philly's not getting the Olympics, but they are getting thinner....

As if we needed one, here's another reason to steer clear of fake cops: In Kingwood, two teenage girls say a man posing as a policeman conducted, uh, an unwanted search Sunday night. Tori Wainright and Shelley Genovese, both 17, say they were hanging out in the parking lot of a Kingwood apartment complex when a man approached them and claimed to be a cop looking for stolen bikes. He demanded to see their IDs...

There are a lot of problems with our public transportation here in Houston, some of which, such as confusing routes and lack of proper respect for Rosa Parks--only the most influential busrider ever--are less worrisome than others. Like, for example, the fact that they run over not just pedestrians, but their own workers, as this disturbing story from the Houston Press reports, and then don't do much about it.
