Yes, we know that some of you are wondering if we've cracked up. Well, that depends...we have not dropped our proverbial basket, we have been alternately giggling (thus, cracking up) and being led down a path of sorts. The navigator and author responsible for our literary journey is the above mentioned Jef With One F Rouner, who shared the job of fronting (or being the "singing unit") of local group, The Black Math Experiment (BME) with Christi Lain. His book is fully titled "The Bible Spelled Backwards Does Not Change the Fact That You Cannot Kill David Arquette and Other Things I Learned in the Black Math Experiment" and it is a wonderful read - inciteful, dark, funny and autobiographical. The book is a well-written chronicle of his path through life, thus far, as it leads to and then winds away from BME. Therein lies a damn good look into a local band which pushed boundaries, avoided "the norm" and provided us with a delightful pairing of performance art and original music (and a toilet paper cannon). For those who have not heard them, BME is a bit of a synth, pop, punk, rock and techno experience that is (obviously) difficult, at best to pigeon-hole to a specific genre. You should really, if you haven't already, hit the interwebs and purchase their music (in particular "You Cannot Kill David Arquette", if not entire CD's, actually, go for the whole banana, buy the CD's).

Houstonist has a special place in our hearts for The Last Concert Cafe on Nance - it was the fabled "knock or you won't get in" mystery Mexican Restaurant of our mispent youth. The location of many nights of live music, cold beer and hot food. Now, we're asking Houston to help the fine folks there raise money in loving memory of their granddaughter Aubrie Kristine Acosta who succumbed to SIDS on January 12th at three months of age. The Ronald McDonald House Charities helped the family and now they wish to give back to help others who may face similar circumstances. Joining the cause in this concert benefit are The Black Math Experiment, Live Oak Decline and Mo Pair & the Ugi Monks. Please, head over to The Last Concert Cafe this Saturday, February 9th beginning at 8:00 p.m. (you have time to have an early dinner!!!). Admission is only $10/per person, and 100% of all proceeds will go to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Houston/Galveston. If you are unable to attend and still wish to support the cause, please contact Brian Tafton at The Last Concert Cafe 713.226.8563, please.
Unfortunately, November 20th's performance with The Misfits at Fitzgerald's was Captain Mongo Nelson's final outting with Black Math Experiment. Those of you who know, or have seen Captain Mongo with BME, please bid him a fond farewell, as he relocates with his wife to the North. He was the first of Bill Curtner's recruits for the band and has been a constant since joining up. His punk/metal influences have been the rythmic backbone of the...
The party is at Rudyard’s tomorrow – you know - THE party. The Black Math Experiment’s CD Release Party for “All You Need is Blood”, at which a couple of other bands will be performing. La Sed will bring some progressive rock courtesy of Puerto Rico and Mk Ultra adds politically-minded psychedelic punk to the mix (political as in the song writing may focus on fighting military culture and the 9/11 conspiracy). This should be...

Other local favorites Prodigal Sons and Lanky open for emerging Geffen pop artist Matt White at Jet Lounge. Thursday, check out Twelve Girls Band: a dozen classically-trained musicians (all women, of course) playing both traditional Chinese songs and popular pop songs. Friday night, Beaumont's own classic blues-rocker Johnny Winter returns to Houston at the Meridian. Saturday, block-off your...
The Dimes may not have swept the Houston Press Music Awards last week, but they did leave with the most trophies – three, to be exact (Best New Act, Best Indie Rock, and Song of the Year). While puppies (in age, that is) compared to many on the Houston music scene, they’re making a big splash right out-of-the-box. We caught up with Carlos Sanchez, guitarist and lead vocalist for The Dimes, as he and the...
Last night, Warehouse Live played host to the annual Houston Press Music Awards. Houstonist was there to absorb all of the entertainment and was treated to some of the best local music around. The Dimes (pictured above) walked away as big winners, with three awards – Best New Act, Best Indie Rock, and Song of the Year, for “Delilah,” which they performed on stage midway through the night. Other performers included Million Year Dance...

Black Math Experiment Lures David Arquette to the Proletariat Under the "Random Events" file, Houstonist sniffs out this unique show at the Proletariat tonight.
