Wanna see a local blues legend for free? For the past few months on Tuesday nights at Boondocks, on the curve, Little Joe Washington has been performing his brand of local blues for free (although we're sure he'll gladly accept your tips.)

Sunday, August 10th at Shakepeare Pub there's a benefit that plans to bust out into a full open mic jam. Beginning at 2 p.m., various bands will be playing as part of a benefit forLarry Lownote Johnson (bassist for John McVey) and his wife, Angela Highnote Johnson. Angela was involved in a near fatal accident when a drunk driver rear ended her vehicle and the insurance money is simply not enough. Most artists are "self-employed" and have either personal insurance or none at all. When tragedy strikes, it's time for the community to band together and help out. After all, we've heard the adages that "charity begins at home" and "it takes a village" - it's time to put some money where our mouth is. Admission to the benefit is free, there will be a raffle and food will be served, your donations are very appreciated.
We know it's late notice, and we do apologize - but, we had to alert all blues hounds to tonight's show. Earl Gilliam Blues Revue will be at The Big Easy tonight from 9:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. and this should be a fabulous set!! Earl, a Texas Blues pianist/organist (78 years of age) will team up with veteran Blues guitarist, and youngster, I.J. Gosey (he's only 71) and they'll be backed up by Fred Arceneaux and Jackie Gray. To give you a lil' background, Earl has played with Lightnin' Hopkins, Joe Guitar Hughes, Johnny Clyde Copeland, Clarence Gatemouth Brown and T-Bone Walker among others. He first recorded in 1955 on Sarg Records (Willie Nelson and Doug Sahm's first label) as one of only two Black artists on the label at the time. I.J., a session player with historic Duke-Peacock Records in Houston during the 50's and 60's has an impressive background, as well. So, if you love the Blues, Texas Swing, Classic R&B and a touch of Zydeco and can operate within our fly-by-the-seat-of-our-pants schedule, hit The Big Easy for this venue.
Houston rapper Pimp C was found dead this morning in his hotel room on LA's Sunset Strip. Pimp C had performed with Too Short on Saturday evening at the House of Blues. Pitchfork reports "L.A. firefighters responded to a 911 call at the Sunset Strip's Mondrian Hotel, where they found the rapper dead in his bed. No information on cause of death has been given at this time." Pimp C, born Chad Butler, was one...
Monday Night Movies at Domy Books It's Monday. AGAIN. We know, right? Monday already? Yep. Shake off the Monday Blues with a free movie at our fav-o-rite bookstore, Domy Books [1709 Westheimer]. Hey, ho, let's go! Tonight's movie is the teen rebellion classic Rock 'n' Roll High School. Keeping in tune with the teen rebellion flicks of the 50s and 60s, Rock 'n' Roll High School delivers much of the same camp with a 70s...
Last night, Warehouse Live played host to the annual Houston Press Music Awards. Houstonist was there to absorb all of the entertainment and was treated to some of the best local music around. The Dimes (pictured above) walked away as big winners, with three awards – Best New Act, Best Indie Rock, and Song of the Year, for “Delilah,” which they performed on stage midway through the night. Other performers included Million Year Dance...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor slight clutter. It's a shot of downtown, but taken in an extraordinary fashion capturing elements of two different buildings that combine to create a very futuristic looking shot. It's shots like this that reinforce the fact that we are Space City, Texas. Oh and of course because we have NASA here too!
"How often does the train go by?" "So often you won't even notice." West U residents would likely add "unless wheat spills from the train, gets soaked by inches of rain and then stinks up your backyard" to the above exchange between Jake and Elwood in The Blues Brothers. A Union Pacific train spilled the wheat during an incident three weeks ago, but the clean up was halted due to the record setting amount of...
This week is a musical Smorgasbord of live acts in town. Early in the week some good regional musicians (Carol Fran or The Troubadours for example) play around town. If you like Bob Schneider, you have two opportunities to catch him live (Friday and Saturday). Also, later in the week the once brit-pop giants Travis will be performing at the Verizon Wireless Theater along with Alabama’s John Paul White. Or if you feel like...
Tonight, rock fans will enjoy the Godsmack show at Verizon Wireless, but if you want something different, check out the eclectic Moodafaruka at the Mucky Duck. Tomorrow night, we highly recommend indie-pop/rock band The Format at The Meridian. The Proletariat is hosting a happy hour show with Get Him Eat Him. Saturday night gives you many Texas country/folk choices – Roger Creager after the horse races, Ray Wylie Hubbard at the Mucky Duck, and...
As you get ready to head out for your July 4th holiday, we thought you might like to have some tunes to play on the way. Houstonist contributors have put together a collection of songs that are currently on the most played list on our iPod. There is a variety, so you should find something you like (and if you're open-minded musically, you'll probably like them all). This month, we have a couple of Houston...

It’s a Whitman’s Sampler of concerts this week: metal, blues, alternative, country, Celtic, zydeco, reggae, etc. If you can find the genre you like, that’s your problem. May we suggest Raul Malo tomorrow night at Warehouse Live. The former leader of The Mavericks recently released an album of covers that seriously challenge the originals. Also, the H-Town Blues Festival sounds like a good line-up (you may want to bring your Prozac). And metal is...
A few guys that are in the rock and roll history books are coming to town this week. Blues great BB King (and his guitar Lucille) will be in Galveston at the Grand 1894 Opera House Thursday night, and Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham brings his solo tour to Verizon Wireless on Friday. In a darker part of the history books is Vanilla Ice (pictured above -- yes, we know that's an old photo,...
H-Town is seriously busy! This weekend brings Lights in the Heights, The Citrus Festival, the XMAS Tree Project, The Tree Lighting Downtown, The Houston Blues Society Holiday Ball, ensuring the homeless have plenty to eat, and shopping for either gifts, or that perfect ensemble to wear to Houstonist's Birthday Party. But wait, there really is more - and more, and more - 'tis the season, after all. If you are not imbibing on the company...
Houstonist has the blues - not the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Blues (silly 2001 ad campaign)- the real blues. The heart and soul, toe-tapping, groove-thang wiggling, get down with your Houstonist badself blues. We liked this photo so much, we are recycling it to call your attention to a Holiday Ball. The Houston Blues Society Ball, benefitting BITS (Blues In The Schools) will be held this Friday, December 8th at Mr. Gino's. Admission is $10...
With visions of sugar plum fairies dancing through their heads, the -Ists began to get into that holiday mood. Well, some did. Austinist wasn't as the NY Times dissed them and a local Tex-Mex institution sold out. Making them feel better was music, sweet music and the local theater getting name checked on "Heroes." Chicagoist tried to wrap their heads around a religious movie being banned from a Christmas themed park. To wash that...
We were starting to wonder whether anything was going to happen with Houston Pavilions, the retail/entertainment/residential/office complex planned for three blocks on the south end of downtown. After all, the land sale was completed in mid-January, and we haven't heard much since House of Blues and Lucky Strike signed on as tenants. But now there is news: The developers have secured $140 million in financing and groundbreaking is set for Nov. 6.
Tuesday Born in Colorado, Jonah Werner now calls Texas his home. He’s a story-teller singer/songwriter that is celebrating the release of his new CD Better Things tonight at the Duck. Music: "Derail" (requires Real Player) 8 p.m. at McGonigel’s Mucky Duck | info Wednesday It’s hard to take a group seriously when they call themselves a “Nintendo band” – so we won’t. The Advantage’s songs are instrumental pieces that sound like they could have...

The great thing about being a grown up is that summer fun doesn't have to end at back to school. And since it still feels like summer anyway, have some summer fun, student style: (By which we mean costing as little as possible). Friday, August 25 Every summer, Theater Suburbia does what they call an "old-fashioned summer 'mellerdrammer'". Come boo the villain and cheer for the hero and the maiden fair in this year's offering,...
A little over a year before we get our own House of Blues downtown, word comes that the famed music venue and restaurant has been acquired by Live Nation, the Clear Channel Communications entertainment company. It was a $350 million transaction. Live Nation claims that the acquisition will not affect the opening of Houston’s House of Blues, which is set for the fall of 2007 in a new entertainment district near the convention center downtown....
. Does your car make the list?
The future Houston Pavilions shopping and enrtertainment complex downtown has a new tenant: Lucky Strike, an upscale Hollywood-based bowling alley and bar. Lucky Strike will join anchor tenant House of Blues in the three-block development at Main and Dallas.
This has really been the month for speculation about Houston Pavilions, the proposed downtown retail, office and residential complex. First came the news that the land sale was complete for the three blocks HP is supposed to sit on, and then today we have word that House of Blues has signed on as the project's first major tenant.
