::MFA Projection Bomb!:: We caught wind of this earlier this week and couldn't resist reposting. Introducing the first guerrilla drive-in theater on the roof of the MFA parking garage this Thursday night. Be part of a smart mob for a 20 minute projection bomb. Bring a car full! Details below, poster attached. (Good attendance would really help my thesis project). Thanks! Clint - - - - - - - - - - - - -...

Good morning, Houston. In these days of near-$3 gas, there's one group of drivers who aren't so worried: hypermilers, who use certain techniques to squeeze every possible M out of their MPG. Hypermiling involves a few pretty simple changes in the way you drive, including coasting, accelerating slowly from stops and the skillful use of cruise control. Used correctly, hypermiling can increase your car's fuel efficiency by 30 percent or more — so why...

It has begun, the 2007-2008 season is here. Actually it didn't really start for the Rockets until the end of the first quarter last night against the Los Angeles Lakers. Houston started off very slow as if they didn’t realize the season had actually begun. Kobe Bryant took control of the first quarter while McGrady and company struggled to find their identity. A new coach and a few new faces on the pine will...

In case you weren't familiar, there's a large university in Austin, with orange and white for their colors, and a big, drugged cow for a mascot. You may have also heard that their football team is usually pretty good, and that a couple years ago, they actually won a national championship in football. Their quarterback that year kinda flew under the radar, so you may not have heard about him, either: regardless, he was...

Back in February of this year, Houstonist attended a screening of the 1983 ground-breaking documentary Style Wars, as part of the MFA's "Movies Houstonians Love" series. The film, presented by one half of UGK,Bun B, was screened to a sold out crowd of Houstonians, and was followed by more than an hour's worth of conversation surrounding Houston's underground music and art culture, that was co-led by Style Wars star and DJ legend, Kay Slay....

Good morning, Houston. We think it's even too hot for the beach lately, but that didn't stop lots of people from heading to Galveston last weekend. But the heat wasn't the only thing those folks had to watch out for - fourteen of them were stung by stingrays. These injuries were all due to beachgoers stepping on stingrays and causing them to lash out. According to Beach Patrol Chief Peter Davis, such incidents can...

Houston, it's time for the annual "Big Show" at the O'Quinn Gallery of Lawndale Art Center. Tonight and tomorrow night, beginning at 7:00 p.m. - and totally free to the public (the second best four-letter "F" bomb - FREE! We are partial to "Fart", too) the Big Slide Show is taking place. Now, what in the wide world of art-y and cultural-like stuff is this? Well, let us do some 'splaining to you, care of...

Good morning, Houston. Did you happen to be in the West U. area last night? If so, maybe you noticed the train derailment in the area, which prompted the evacuation of a handful of houses and the closure of a section of Bissonnet Street. The derailment, which involved seven cars, happened on the Union Pacific line near the corner of Community and Judson; four of the cars were carrying wheat and lumber, and another...

What with Paris Hilton's release earlier this week and the upcoming celebration of American Independence (sorry, Londonist!), we've been thinking a lot about freedom. Freedom to vote, freedom to choose, and most importantly, freedom to blog. Here are a few things we're happy we've been free to blog about this week. Being the nation's capital, DCist felt especially proud to let freedom ring this week by exposing the really important issues, like how sad they...

Arriving into Los Angeles with their first three-game sweep, the Astros came into Angel Stadium to make a statement and to turn a mediocre season around. With the game on the line, Angels manager Mike Scioscia went to his closer in the ninth inning to preserve a 9-9 game. He knew the importance of this game and managed like it and it paid off. Francisco Rodriguez got out of a bases loaded jam to...

Happy Father's Day! For those of you who have dads, are dads, or know dads, this one's for you, from all of us at the Gothamist network. It was a week of bizarre, embarassing headlines at DCist. The trial of the local administrative law judge who sued his cleaners for $54 million over a pair of missing pants left everyone shaking their heads. Then the capital city was nearly brought to its knees, twice, by...

So this is kinda cool: Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports are the first airports in the world to have mobile threat containment units — basically, bomb-proof trash cans — that can be used to get suspicious carry-on baggage safely away from passengers without shutting down the airport terminal. The units, which in all fairness bear little resemblance to actual trash cans, are manufactured by the British company Aigis Blast Protection. The circular containers weigh around...

El-P Performs at Numbers Tonight Happy Memorial Day, folks. If you are like us, your would like to negotiate for another weekend without so much rain. We are preparing the petition. One of our favorite things to do while it rains (or pretty much any other time), oh get your minds outta the gutter, is catch some live music indoors. Last night's Elliot Lipp show at the Proletariat, really got us in the mood....

A Galveston cruise terminal was evacuated yesterday due to a suspicious package. A police dog found the package on Carnival's Ecstasy ship around 8:30 yesterday morning. The port was closed from Pelican Island to Galveston Yacht Basin. The package turned out to be nothing but a computer printer. We're sure that the passengers on board the ship, who were returning from a five-day Caribbean cruise, were not terribly excited about hanging out in their rooms...

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. I have to go to a wedding shower this week. It’s the second one this month (two different couples), and in addition to the shower gifts, I'll bring another present to each wedding. All of this shopping is costing me a lot of money, and one of the couples is on their second marriage. At what point can I stop buying my friends...

Carlos Lee belted a walk-off home run in the 10th inning off Giants pitcher Jonathan Sanchez to give the Astros an amazing 6-5 come from behind victory Tuesday night. The comeback trail began in the eight inning as the Houston team was down 5-3 with two outs. With Carlos Lee on first, rookie sensation Hunter Pence stroked a high fly ball toward the left field Crawford Boxes just punching the foul pole to give...

It's Art Car time again, kids. Time to watch four wheeled oranges, roaches, dogs and other rolling works of art cruise down Allen Parkway. Dealing with the crowds and traffic on Saturday could easily drive you insane. Take the edge off with a(n) Art Car Bomb. Car Bomb+ 3/4 pint Guinness draught + 1 shot Bailey's Irish Cream + a splash of Jameson's Irish Whiskey Pour the Guinness and let the bubbles settle. Meanwhile,...

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. Last night, I went out with some friends for a few drinks. Since when has Cinco de Mayo become such a big drinking event? It’s not even a major holiday in Mexico. As long as Dilettante has been aware of Cinco de Mayo, it has been a drinking holiday. But it does seem to be turning into more and more of an excuse...

Here's a joke waiting to be told: What would soldiers and Marines want with silly string, bubble gum and pantyhose? Go ahead, take your best shot. We'll give you a second to think it over. (In the meantime, have you heard the one about the duck that walks into a drugstore ... ?) Seriously, though — the silly string, bubble gum and pantyhose were part of military supply kits that kids at Memorial Drive Elementary...

We first fell in love with the Old 97’s as soon as we heard “Time Bomb” on college radio more than 10 years ago. Half a dozen albums later, the band is celebrating and touring on the heels of their latest CD, Hit by a Train: The Best of the Old 97’s. Houstonist caught up with Rhett Miller, lead singer, songwriter and sometimes solo artist (Rhett released his second solo album The Believer last year)...

Good morning, Houston! Looks like we're far from the only people enjoying the bliss that is freedom from telemarketers: According to the AP, almost 25 million phone numbers were added to the federal do not call list in fiscal 2006, bringing the total ... uh ... number of numbers on the list to 132 million. And amazingly enough, it's working: The percentage of complaints last year was small, and the FTC has taken enforcement...

You wont read game analysis here at Houstonist, but being Opening Day and all, we thought you needed to know what happened yesterday. If you missed the game, you can be thankful — it was probably the worst way to begin the year. It wasn't all bad, though, which is probably why the game felt like a punch in the stomach. Oswalt was brilliant, pitching 7 1/3 innings and allowing a run. Luke Scott...

Busy week for live music, thanks to SXSW and it's overflow of artists into Houston. Some of the showcases you can check out include Super Happy Fun Land's nightly extravaganza and Alternative Press brings you "Bands you Need to Know" on Friday at the Meridian. Proletariat and Walter's on Washington are just two other of the many venues hosting SXSW artists. We highly recommend checking out a few of these shows this week --...

Good morning, Houston. If you attended mass on Ash Wednesday, we hope it went more smoothly than one at the cathedral in Santa Fe, N.M. During the mass, CD players duct-taped to the undersides of pews began blasting sexually explicit language — as you might expect, it was disruptive. Church staff members took the CD players to the basement, after which a bomb squad arrived and blew two of the three players up. For...

Former Houstonian Daniel Joseph Maldonado has become the first American to be charged with joining terrorists in Somalia. Maldonado, 28, was arrested in Kenya last month and was ordered held without bond yesterday on charges that he trained with al-Qaeda to try to form an Islamic state in Somalia. According to the criminal complaint against Maldonado, he left Houston in November 2005 for Cairo; by December 2006, he was in Somalia, where he had been...

What's up with Continental this week? Yesterday we heard about the pilot pilot who had a heart attack at the controls, and then there was the Continental flight that was delayed because of a bomb threat.

We don't know about you, but it's friggin cold out there. Well, not for some of you. It seems as though places that are supposed to be cold are warm and places that are supposed to be warm are cold. Or maybe that's just us. Either way, we're freezing. Austinist said goodbye to their co-editor (sell-out) and played rumor monger on the SXSW lineup. And when dozens of dead birds littered downtown Austin, it's...

Bank robbery, threatening note, getaway vehicle — yeah, we've heard it all before. But what made a robbery at the Wachovia branch at 235 W. 20th St. unusual was that the bandit arrived and fled on a bicycle. Yesterday afternoon, the man reportedly rode up to the bank on a bike, walked in, approached a teller and handed over a note demanding money and saying he was carrying a bomb. According to KHOU, "the robber...

Da Bomb-This week we feature a libation from Houstonist's very own Matt H. Since 'tis the season for holiday parties, we had a special something picked out, but the drastic climate change made it too damn hot for a hot toddy. Maybe next week. As you twist and shout to the same office party classics, brought to you by the same office party band, try an old favorite made a little different - "The World's...

Yes, it's Halloween today — but that doesn't mean trickery wasn't afoot yesterday, too. Take, for example, the case of a car battery that masqueraded as a ... uh ... a ... well, something on the Gulf Freeway early in the afternoon rush hour: What turned out to be a car battery in the Gulf Freeway caused a brief shutdown of all southbound lanes at Scott during today's afternoon rush. The lanes were closed from...
