Ah, Nielsen's Deli - home of Houston's most luscious, and best ever homemade chicken salad and one very mean deviled egg. For over 55 years, Nielsen's has been the Afton Oaks area's source for deli sandwiches and salads, homemade desserts, stuffed jalapenos, luncheon trays, finger sandwiches and homemade soups. This lunchtime jewel is located on Richmond Avenue, just inside Loop 610, near the Galleria. It's convenient from downtown too, peeps! Open 7 days a week, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. you gotta make a stop for some chicken salad, even if you buy a pint to go (it's fantastic slathered on a good grainy cracker). As we intimated, the deviled eggs are amazing, Houstonist Mama would be proud of them, for sure. The egg salad is wonderful too! Our standard order is a regular chicken salad on whole wheat with lettuce and tomato and two deviled eggs. The sandwich is $5.95, plus $0.50 for the veggies and it's on "good bread", not the stuff that makes you wonder what grocery store it's from. The eggs are $0.75 each. Not a bad deal at all, lunch will run you around ten bucks. That sandwich is really large enough to share, but, do not try any of that around us, we have a spork with which to consume our eggs and we know how use it! Parking can be scarce-ish, but, they do accept phone in orders. Just go in, queue up and pay (phoners cannot cut in front of counterers, it's just rude), as your order should be ready upon arrival.

Okay, okay, we know, you don't need to remind us (we are sensitive about our largesse), we're in shape - round, round is technically a shape. We cannot help ourselves at all, will power schmill power, who needs it? There is one perfect food, a luscious bundling of all of the food groups. The burger, the tasty, juicy cheesy with bacon and all of the veggies and a schmear of mustard and a double-schmear of mayonnaise burger with some kind of side. Note: we did not say "onion rings or french fries" because the place we are reviewing gots no fried sides. Never fear, Bubba's Texas Burger Shack may not have the room for a fryer (and one of those countertop units like you can buy at the whatevahmart would never keep up) but do not let that deter you. Located under the new Westpark Tollway, whose construction they survived by the skin of their teeth, in a smallish and very eclectic shack is the home of the best buffalo burger we have ever wrapped our lips around. We have wrapped our lips around a lot of, well, burgers.
Barbecue Inn, located on W. Crosstimbers at Yale has been serving up home cooked diner fare since 1946. Houstonist had to pay them a visit, as we were told that the fried chicken was "to die". We're not just taking anyone's word on it - we have to find out for our ownselves (it's a sacrifice, but, one we are willing to make). While waiting for our table, we chatted up the hostess, who let us know that the barbecue is good, but, the fried chicken and seafood were the real show-stoppers. The official suggestion was "If you get the fried chicken, you just have to order about three fried shrimp with it. They are the best in town.", or something similar to that. No lie, those shrimp were way better than ALMOST as good as Houstonist Mama's, or so we would have her believe.
To heck with that resolution to be thinner - we are embracing our inner grease-lover, you know, the one who firmly believes that cheese is a food group and will eat cardboard if it comes covered in cream gravy. Yes, that one, the "believer in spandex britches". So, we are back on our "burger thing" and will be telling you all about good burgers, mediocre burgers and possibly bad ones (hey, if it's gross AND gucci, we will attempt to prevent you from wasting your coin). To that end, here's the first burger scoop of the year it also happens to be a "double bonus" report. Meaning, you get to have a seriously tasty burger and some tots, rings or fries, score some ice cold beer or cocktails (there is a full bar) AND bowl a few games. It's all the makings of a near perfect evening of entertainment in one convenient building located just slightly ITL (In The Loop) at Palace Lanes.

Downtown is the place to be for Cinco de Mayo, everything's waiting for you! Commonly confused with Mexico's Independence Day - tomorrow is a celebration of General Seguin's victory over French occupational forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. There's the Bayou City Crawfish Festival (which benefitsTexas EquuSearch - and has a mechanical bull that Sissy can ride!), the 7th Annual Dragon Boat Festival, held at Allen's Landing (1000 Commerce) AND Mas...
Houstonist recently lunched at Christian's Totem on Washington Avenue, near I-10. In the spirit of passing along "burger-love" to Houstonians, we had to tell you about this little joint. It has undergone some remodeling of late, but, the burgers are just the same! Huge, juicy fully-loaded burgers with nice crispy onion rings or fries. We've had both the fries and the rings, they are fantastic - it just depends on your personal preference - we...
Houstonist had to get our "burger on" after our first birthday party - had to. So, we phoned in some bacon cheeseburgers and rings for ourself and a co-worker from Pete's Fine Meats on Richmond Avenue. Normally, a "go burger" is kinda listless by the time you get to where you're going with it - this one was not super hot, but still warm enough and juicy. The onion rings were not homemade, however, they...
Blanco's, located at the corner of Buffalo Speedway and W. Alabama, is known more as a honkytonk, serving up the likes of Gary P. Nunn and Alvin Crow, both of whom we've seen there. However, Houstonians may not be aware of the lunch specials, burgers, quesadillas and other offerings they serve up. Recently, Houstonist went in for lunch to get the standard bacon cheeseburger and onion rings. Difficult to pass up, are the red...
A recent venture to our closest Cafe Express resulted in our sampling the Bleu Cheese Bacon Burger, to which we added avocado (nice addition and enough to share with our lunch companion). Albeit we are not fond of chains, Cafe Express has never let us down for quality and quantity - it is pricey-ish, however. Falling into our "gucci burger" category, along with Pappa's Burgers, but also worth the price, is this particular specimen....
Houstonist made a botched burger attempt this past weekend at Guy's Meat Market. At first - we were sorely disappointed to learn that you can only get one of Guy's smoked burgers Tuesday - Friday from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. (or - until they are gone). Rats. Well - that's a frenzied drive from work in the making - just to try one of the burgers billed as "one of the best". The...
There are many, many things that we love about Houston. We love food, we love independent coffee houses and we love live Jazz music. That's why, we're excited about live jazz at The Daily Grind on Washington.
Houstonist digs roller derby — the Houston Roller Derby, to be specific. The final bout of the season will be held Sunday at the Arabia Shrine Temple, 2900 N. Braeswood. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with the action beginning at 7 p.m. Proceeds of this bout will benefit the Lupus Foundation of America-Texas Gulf Coast Chapter. The championship bout will be held in September; Houstonist will scoop you when the time is right. Lupus...
Houstonist reminds you that we're diligently working to bring you the best information available should you love burgers — the sacrifices we make! To that end, we made our way to Pappas Burger for our usual bacon cheeseburger and onion rings (shown in the photo). Like many of our favorite joints, Pappas is a walk-up — and a crowded one. The waitstaff was extremely friendly, and management visited our table once we were seated...
The sportsfan in us loves Two Rows (2400 University). This small chain offers friendly atmosphere, big TVs, and microbrewed beer of every conceivable color, flavor, and sort. The selection of handcrafted brews changes daily, so you never know what you're going to get, but try the Osage Golden Wheat (light, refreshing, and served with a slice of lemon) or for something a little heartier, the supersmooth Route 66 Amber Ale. Kick back with your beer...
Whatever shall we do with those crazy vegetarians? Houstonist votes you take them to Ziggy's Healthy Grill, (2202 W. Alabama), where you can get them tipsy on the fantastic pomegranate martini and relax omn the patio. You meateaters can enjoy a variety of burgers (including ostrich and venison as well as the more traditional beef and turkey) grilled to order, which come with french fries, sweetpotato fries, or the best onion rings on the planet...
Houston's a great food city, and one of the things we're lucky enough to have that lots of cities don't is a plethora of yummy and cheap lunch places. We also have our own cuisine (TexMex, of course!), so what could be better than combining the two? If you're in the mood for Mexican (to eat there or take away), try Berryhill Baja Grill (eleven locations around town). Begun as a tamale stand downtown all the way back in 1928, Berryhill is a (small) franchise now but the commitment to quality and taste has remained.
Hidden away next to a copy place and a Hollywood Video, Mo Mong (1201 Westheimer) serves tasty Vietnamese (and other, not-so-successful Asian food). The primary thing about Mo Mong, however, is not the food but the decor: the place is a trendy-looking haven of laquered dark wood, and even with a lot of people there, the noise level is usually manageable. (Although, look out for Monday and Wednesday — $2 martinis make it a great...
