Good morning, Houston. Sure, the national economy may be going to hell in a handbasket, but look on the bright side: Houston's housing market is remaining pretty strong, so at least you homeowners have something of value! According to a new report, the median home value in Houston fell just $500 between the end of the third quarter 2007 and the end of the year, to $119,300 from $119,800 — still a gain of more than $4,000 over the 2006 year-end average of $115,700. Oh, one other thing: People from more expensive markets are apparently discovering that things are cheaper here. "Areas in Texas, which we have long characterized as undervalued, are now attracting significant migration at the expense of much higher-cost metros of California or Florida," the report said. Oh, .

National Signing Day proved to be a disappointment for Texas Longhorn fans, as star high school running back Darrell Scott chose to enroll at Colorado by signing a letter of intent this afternoon. Scott, the second ranked ball carrier amongst 2008 high school recruits, spent the past several weeks debating between the merits of the two Big XII universities. Ultimately, the California-bred halfback went with the Buffaloes, leaving an entire burnt orange nation in mourning.

Love it, or hate it – it’s nearly December and whether you’re into Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa or whatever else you may be into, December is a really bigass month. If nothing else, the streets are more congested, people drive even crazier than normal and the average Houstonian is pelted with food, drink and festivities. Good morning, Houston. There's nothing quite like a building implosion to lift our spirits at the beginning of the week — if, of course, it's a building we won't miss. That happened to be the case with the Crowne Plaza hotel in the Medical Center, which was reduced to rubble Sunday; click the link for video from KHOU. (Be prepared to wait — there's a lot of buildup to the big moment in Channel...
The Texans bandwagon that looked so promising at the beginning of this season has definitely seen better days: the wheels have fallen off, the axles have snapped, and all but the Pollyanna-esque optimists and the mentally ill have given up the possibility of the playoffs. So as the Texans make their second trip to California in as many weeks to face the Raiders in Oakland, the question becomes: what's the best case scenario from here...

The big question heading into the Texans matchup against the San Diego Chargers has nothing to do with Matt Schaub's hip, Andre Johnson's knee, or Gary Kubiak's recent coaching decisions, but when and where the game will be played. As you're no doubt aware, George Bush started a series of fires in Southern California to distract attention away from the Iraq war, and a lot of people around the San Diego area were forced...
Good morning, Houston. So this is what it must be like to live in California, huh? We're looking at a string of fantastic days, with highs in the lower to mid 70s and lows around 50 into the weekend. Today, expect a high of 73 with clear skies. You know what that means? We all have to spend as much time as possible outside. Yep, you have our permission to skip school and work...

Another banner week at Chicagoist started off with daily reports from food writer Lisa Shames on her attempt to eat only locally grown and raised foodstuffs all week as part of a farmers market...
In the mid 90’s, Matt Sharp, bass player of Weezer, decided to form a little side project called The Rentals. Their debut album scored a minor, and damn catchy, radio hit “Friends of P.” Sharp ended up leaving Weezer in the late 90’s, but only made one other Rentals album. Now, after many years of absence, The Rentals are back with a new EP, The Last Little Life. The Rentals will be hitting Warehouse Live...

For once, this week's music calendar is light on local acts, heavy on touring acts. Tonight, catch classic crooner Tony Bennett (who turns 80 this year) at Jones Hall. Tomorrow night, we recommend California indie rock band Rocco Deluca & the Burden at Warehouse Live. Mix things up a little bit Wednesday night and catch Austin's Belleville Outfit at the Duck, combining jazz, swing and Americana. Houston's own R&B legend Archie Bell will "tighten...

What we have here is the legendary Dread Zeppelin live at The Engine Room in 2000. Who is Dread Zeppelin you ask? Well, they are a band who covers Led Zeppelin, Elvis, Bob Marley as well as many others with an Elvis impersonator, Tortelvis, singing lead all while playing the music reggae style! They've even been endorsed by the legendary, Robert Plant! They are a fun band to see live but mostly these days...
With Harry Potter on the brain, we realized it's been awhile since we strolled into McGonigel'ss for some good ole open mic fun. Every Tuesday night at the Mucky Duck, signers and songwriters fill up the small, cozy Greenway Plaza pub with the sounds of acoustic guitars and tapping feet. Tonights songwriters include Shake Russell, Jed & Kelly, and Mary Cutrufello. From Bar Harbor, Maine to Santa Fe, New Mexico; from Los Angeles, California to...
Good morning, Houston. Does all this rain make you feel like crap? There may be a medical reason: It's called non-allergic rhinitis, and it can be triggered by changes in air pressure — you know, the kind that accompany bad weather. Rhinitis symptoms are a lot like those that come with allergies: congestion, sinus pressure and post-nasal drip. Decongestants, saline washes and nasal sprays can help, but the only thing that'll really make you...
There are no new traffic laws and no new laws concerning cell phone use in cars according to the Texas DPS. A recent email hoax is being forwarded to inboxes across Texas as fast as those drivers in the left lane. That is, until they reach someone driving the speed limit, of course. The hoax email states that improper use of the HOV lane will result in a fine in excess of $1,000, doubling and...
The road to 3,000 continued at Minute Maid Park, Texas as Craig Biggio came into Thursday night's contest only three hits away. In the third inning while facing Aaron Cook with a 2-2 count, Biggio lined a single into center field for career hit 2,998. Biggio would return to the plate in the fifth inning and would smack an Aaron Cook curve ball to Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins, who then overthrew first baseman...
We were kind of interested last week when we noticed the story of Frederic "Ric" Brame, the 72-year-old dance instructor who is facing a charge of sexual assault of a child. Brame, who taught dance in Montgomery County, allegedly began assaulting a former student when she was 12 or 13 years old — but that wasn't all: Investigators say that, for years, Brame has pretended to be noted movie and Broadway dancer Tommy Rall. And...
Good morning, Houston. Ever wondered how our state's economy stacked up against the rest of the world? Maybe not, but now there's a map that tells you, whether you care or not. Texas' economy is about the same size of Canada's in terms of GDP, making it the second-largest in the country (we fall behind California, which is comparable to France). Coming in dead last is Wyoming, which was renamed Uzbekistan. >>Wind farm a...
Google recently announced two exciting new features. One is street view, a new feature of Google Maps, which allows you to see street-side views of locations in many major cities. Right now, the feature is available only in San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas, Miami, and Denver, and there are plenty of interesting things to be seen, aside from the feature being helpful if you're traveling to a new location. Google has also started incorporating...

The times, they are indeed a-changin' in your cable box, y'all. Just when you were getting used to groaning at the horrific Time-Warner commercials, which we think were meant to be "cute" and "quaint" but actually just looked "terribly unprofessional" and "dumb", your Time Warner cable is becoming Comcast. So, now that we've brought you up to speed, what does this actually mean for Joe Houstonist, cable subscriber? Well, not a heck of a lot...
Good morning, Houston. Another day, another ranking: This time, Houston is the second most dangerous place in the U.S. for letter carriers — at least in terms of dog bites. According to the U.S. Postal Service, 94 mail carriers were bitten by dogs in Houston last year, putting us slightly behind Santa Ana, Calif., which logged 96 bites. The safest city in the country: New York City, of all places. Who knew? The USPS...
