Lots of CDs are released week after week. And though we unwisely spend a bulk of our disposable income on music, Houstonist understands that you work hard for the money, honey! So every Tuesday, we'll bring you a list of CDs that we think will give you the most bang for your buck. Ryan Adams and his band the Cardinals release an EP called Follow the Lights today, just months after the acclaimed full-length Easy... more ›

While most of the baseball world was focused yesterday on the races for the final playoff spots, including the Mets historic collapse in the NL East, as usual, Craig Biggio was just doing his job, just like he's done for the past 20 years. But for the first time in 20 years, Biggio won't be going back to work today. For those of us who grew up in Houston, Biggio is just as much a... more ›

The Astros may have 99 problems, but the pitch ain't one. After stumbling out of the gate to start this week's series against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Astros saddled up thoroughbred Roy Oswalt and rode to victory last night, securing Cecil Cooper's first major league win as the 'stros new manager. Oswalt worked with trademark efficiency, blazing through seven innings while throwing only ninety-nine pitches. Offensively, the team rode homers by Luke Scott and... more ›

Jacoby Jones is still running. The Texans 3rd round draft pick out of of Division 2 Lane College continues to be the highlight maker for the team this preseason. On Saturday against the Arizona Cardinals in Phoenix, Jones ran back a punt return 80 yards and showed off some ankle-shattering moves in the process. Could Jones be this year's Devin Hester? Too soon to tell, but he could be a Sportscenter staple at this rate.... more ›

The amazing journey of Hunter Pence hit another high on Monday when he was named the National League's top rookie. For the month of May, the Texan hit .343 (37-for-108) with 4 home runs, 19 RBI and 9 doubles. Pence made his Houston debut on April 28 to help jolt a struggling offense and he has yet to disappoint. On Sunday afternoon, Pence help lead an Astros comeback after being down 4-1 by going... more ›

Roger freakin' Clemens, y'all. Don't even get us started. But even if you want to call him a traitor, you gotta admit the man can pitch, and so can the guys up for the award named after him, the Clemens Award, which is presented annually to the top pitcher in college baseball. Three Rice students are on the official watch-list for the award this year. ESPN Top-100 prospect Joe Savery (with a record of 6-1... more ›

Well hello, Houston! It's the greatest day in America: Opening Day 2007! Spring Training is over, the roster is set and now it's time to play ball. The Astros' main concern last year was hitting. Heck, it was pathetic, but Uncle Drayton broke out the checkbook, signed power hitter Carlos Lee for a cool $100 million and added utility player and 2006 All-Star Mark Loretta. Also new to the team are a pair of native... more ›

With 4 days until Roy Oswalt and the Houston Astros start the 2007 season, we are holding back the “giddy.” While this spring had some highlights (Jason Lane, .260, 5HR’s & newbie Carlos Lee .370), concerns abound in the pitching department. With the loss of Andy Pettitte and presumably Roger Clemens, the Astros are looking for newly acquired veterans Jason Jennings and Woody Williams to shoulder the load. While its never the perfect indicator... more ›

The Astros continue to heat up winning three straight in the Grapefruit League with a 5-0 victory over the Cardinals coming on the heels of Sunday's shelling of the Nationals. The offense was alive with eight hits, and the pitching staff shut down the red bird offense with nine innings of shut out pitching by Nieve, Gutierrez, Qualls, Asencio and White. Of course we all know that pre-season in any sport means squat when it... more ›

So here's something you probably didn't know: In Houston, it's illegal to carry a sign or poster on a public street. The law was passed in 1970, when a lot of people were carrying signs, but it's not so relevant today — which is why police officers have been told to ignore it. But one cop apparently didn't remember: In October 2004, he ticketed Christopher Kelly for carrying a homemade sign covered with slogans critical... more ›

OK, we may be one of the the fattest, most polluted cities. We'll give you that. But finally, reports KHOU, a list we can be proud of: Houston is ranked only #47 on the list of most dangerous cities despite last year's rising crime stats. The study, published by Morgan Quitno Press, looks at more than just crime rate--also taken into account are individual crimes, such as rape and burglary, and their prevalence in various... more ›

Thanks to Dennis Green and the Cardinal's debilitating loss on Monday, bloggers everywhere have the perfect slogan for their struggling sports team. After watching the 34-6 loss to Dallas, the Texans are indeed who we thought they were - an improved team under Gary Kubiak who can compete for a quarter or two, but will ultimately struggle to surpass mediocrity due to personnel woes. While we don't recommend firing coordinators a la the Ravens or... more ›

The shot from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor jesusfreak_129. Noticing a theme with the photos this week? It's all Astros this week as everyone holds there breath to see if the good guys can make it. Even if it wasn't Astros week, this picture would still get shown because it's a fantastic action shot that not only captures the speed, but is also the perfect angle. And the Cardinals lose. Below the jump,... more ›

OK, thunder gang: another weekend, another football battle. If last week, Houstonist reminded you that Philadelphia had a team of some note, this installment should come as a surprise to none. The Indianapolis Colts are on the short list for NFL’s best teams, and with good reason. They’ve got an absolutely lethal offense, a defense custom-built by Tony Dungy, and oh yeah, possibly the most technically proficient quarterback in pigskin history. Did we mention that they made a serious run at the 1972 Dolphins’ perfect record last year? colts-touchdown-sundae-758137.jpg So, fair readers, it’s mighty unlikely that this Sunday’s trip to Coltdome will yield a Texans’ victory. But that’s not to say it won’t be a game well worth watching, mostly because of the Six Things You Must Know About Indy’s Colts. more ›
