The Dynamo are in a quandry. On the heels of winning their second consecutive MLS Cup, they're at the center of a dispute with the MLS. The Orange are owned by AEG, an entertainment conglomerate owned by Phil Anschutz. AEG used to own close to half of the teams in MLS, but are now down to just our all-conquering hometown boys, and the pretty boy-signing LA Galaxy. The MLS is ready for AEG to shed...

Our favorite at-work timewasters over at TMZ.com are reporting that Houston's pop/R&B princess herself has reunited with original Destiny's Child member Michelle Rowland to open an apartment building: The Knowles-Rowland Temenos Place Apartments, for people trying to improve their situations who might not otherwise have a place to live. Through her charity, the Survivor Foundation, Beyonce and her family are building and financing the building, which will be a 48 unit "short term to longterm...

Oodles of noodles on Shepherd at W. Alabama! Today marks the grand opening of the second Jenni’s Noodle House. The original Jenni’s Noodle House, located in Old Chinatown downtown, opened its doors six years ago. Houstonist loves Jenni’s because of the big personality that co-owner Scott Weaver brings to the store. Always the approachable and high energy character, we chatted with Scott about Jenni, Jenni’s and the new restaurant. What were the inspirations for the...

Good morning, Houston. Seems like everyone's listening to iPods these days, eh? And even if you don't have one of the near-ubiquitous mp3 players, all might not be peace and quiet: As the AP notes, iPod-related noise pollution is a growing problem. It can happen in several ways, including people who turn their iPods up to top volume and others who sing along with the music in their heads. Bbut there are ways to...

Houstonist landed her after departing from a small media market town where the most colorful television news personality was the local weatherman with the bad toupee - think Brick from Anchorman. Naturally we were blown away by the loud delivery, blue sunglasses and long earlobes that were Marvin Zindler. His ear splitting delivery of his tag line - "MAR-vin ZINDLER, EYE-witness NEWS!" - emblazoned the phrase in the memories of Houstonians despite hearing it only...

A veritable Houston legend and one of our favorite local celebrities, KTRK's muckraking Marvin Zindler died today at 85 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He announced on air earlier this summer that he was suffering from cancer, but, characteristically, he didn't let it slow him down. In his last days, Zindler was still hard at work, filing reports and doing newscasts from his hospital bed. It's hard to say what exactly Zindler is "best-known"...

What we have here is supposedly a rare video of U2 performing in a Houston bar. While Houstonist can't vouch for the validity of this video, we can take note that this is probably from the Rattle & Hum era of the band's career. If anyone can shed some light on this rare video, please do so by leaving us a comment. We'd like to know where and when this video was taken. In...

Some of you may have seen the painful video of Houston star Beyonce Knowles slipping and falling down at a recent show in JamLando (that's for you, Dave).

There are some restaurants we go to because we love the food and others because we like the décor and atmosphere. Jenni’s Noodle House is neither but we love going here because we like how it makes us feel. This popular downtown lunch hot spot is quirky and personable. Devoted patrons almost seem to carry a badge of honor after a meal at Jenni’s. Owners Scott and Jenni imprint their personality throughout their humble restaurant....

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus If you've got a kid, access to one, or just the jones to relive childhood memories, you're in luck. The circus is in town! They opened yesterday and will be here at Reliant Park only until July 22, so hurry up and get your tickets, which are fairly inexpensive. Unless, of course, you'd like to be a "Circus Celebrity" for $125. The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Baily...

If you haven't yet seen Whitney Casey's (of Great Day Houston and CNN fame) new weekly Chronicle column "Relationships with Whit," then, by most accounts, you're pretty lucky. We usually leave hating on the Chron to other local blogs, but we couldn't help but notice some of the snitty reactions to Casey's column. From James Campbell's About:Chron blog: So the Chronicle has hired Whitney Casey to do a column on relationships? This is a woman...

85-year-old Houston icon Marvin Zindler announced yesterday on KTRK that he is suffering from pancreatic cancer. Marvin had endeared himself to us long before we read about the fur-lined handcuffs he carried around for arresting ladies when he was a police officer, and this news was upsetting for lots of people - including us. Yesterday, he spoke to ABC 13 viewers with his doctor about his previous health battles and the one he's about to face. As you might imagine, his speech began with, "Well, folks..."

The year was 1992 and Morrissey was probably on tour for his album Your Arsenal when he made a stop at a little independent music store for an autograph session. The now defunct Record Rack formerly at Shepherd and West Alabama was the site for this pandemonium. Fans camped for hours in the sweltering July heat for a chance to see their idol. Some were so overcome with emotion they could barely conduct an interview,...

Get ready with your jokes about a really big wedding: According to the Chinese state press, Houston Rocket Yao Ming will marry his girlfriend of eight years in August. Yao, 27, and Ye Li, 25, met in 1999 when Yao was playing for the Shanghai Sharks men's team and Ye was playing for the club's women's team. Since then, Ye — who's 6 feet, 2 inches tall herself — has gone on to play for the Chinese national women's team, but she's suffered from injuries in recent years. Ye is reportedly a frequent visitor to Yao's home here, and she's even studied English at the University of Houston.

Jerry Seinfeld at Jones Hall What's the deal with Jerry Seinfeld? He's part of the brains behind Seinfeld, TV Guide's greatest TV show of all time, and Wikipedia reports that he's earned more money for the portrayal of a single character than any actor ever. Not bad, for a show about nothing. The man himself, Jerry Seinfeld, will grace Jones Hall with his presence this evening for two stand-up comedy shows at 7 and 9:30....

Ok, as in the vein of Scholarly Pursuits, so must you Git Literated. Book time. One of Houston's few nonB&N bookstores, Brazos, is supplying those in need of re-love for the English language with some excellent material. Literature, that is. And by literature, we mean the byproduct of political celebrities. Specifically, John Kerry and Molly Ivins. Accordingly, June 1 and June 2. Friday, June 1, Brazos Bookstore welcomes Senator and ex-mightabeen president, John Kerry. Kerry...

Trying to Change the World... One Blog at a Time picked up on a story that Houstonist wrote about yesterday: three HISD schools that were in jeopardy of being shut down. He raised a lot of the perennial good points about the problems with public education in America and increasing class stratification and questioned the notion that underperforming schools should be shut down. A good, thoughtful post from one of Houstonist's favorite readers and local...

Linda Lay, the widow of former Enron Chairman Ken Lay, has filed against the forfeiture of nearly $13 million in property and cash that the government says is tied to criminal activity. The court action was filed after the criminal charges against Ken Lay were dropped after his death last year. The authorities have said that the property is the "proceeds of the fraud proven in the criminal case against Lay." Lay's widow has asked...

We'll admit that we're not exactly business-savvy, and we'd rather read the comics, or even Ken Hoffman, than the business section. But today, Mary Flood's column about car crash lawyers and advertising caught our eye. We were surprised to learn that Jim Adler, also known as "The Texas Hammer," has even established a presence on Myspace. And what an elaborate Myspace it is! Mary Flood's column said that his page played the theme from Rocky,...

Needing to brush up on your smarts? No date for Monday night? Good news. On Monday, May 21, Progressive Forum Houston welcomes playwright and queen of academe, Anna Deveare Smith to the Wortham Center. Smith first received national attention for her play, Fires in the Mirror, which brought the harsh street realities of 1990's Brooklyn to the stage. Smith's work in the theater addresses issues of identity politics and race, and her academic reputation is...

Houstonist headquarters is powered by caffeine, oompa loompas & Matlock reruns. Old Ben has inspired us to investigate options for Thursday evening fun. Let's review the case facts: + We like you. + We love beer. + Kay's has lots of cold beer One guess as to where we'll be. Why not join us and make it a pawty? Happy hour specials will be in effect, but even at full price, Kay's is still...

Jack Valenti, the long-time head of the Motion Picture Association of America and Houston native passed away today at his home in Washington. He was 85 and still suffering the effects of a stroke he had in March. Valenti was born in Houston to Sicilian immigrants in 1921, growing up on the still unpaved streets of the 1st Ward. He traced his love of movies to a string of jobs working in downtown Houston movie...

MTV's reporting that Beyonce, who last week was getting sued over covering Des'ree's song, is pulling the album containing the song, "B'Day", along with an accompanying music video DVD. The ban will be in effect at least until May 4th, when a preliminary hearing will take place.

Oops! Houston siren Beyonce's getting sued. Seems she wanted to cover mid-90s popstar Des'ree's song. (You'd recognize Des'ree from her song "You Gotta Be", which Houstonist runs into at the gym every single time we go. Also? Five words: Sunny. Ninety-Nine. Point. One. Or is that four words? We never understood about the hyphenated thingies....) Ahem. Anyway.... Des'ree's song "I'm Kissing You", which was featured in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet back in 1996 somehow...

So, did you hear about Andre Agassi being in town over the weekend and raising about $300,000 for Simms Elementary school in La Marque? It was part of an Oprah Winfrey-sponsored reality show, The Big Give, in which participants compete to find the most creative ways to taken given amounts of money and multiply them so they can be given away to help others — in Houston, Agassi was competing against Tony Hawk, who held...

Need to know just a little bit about something? Ask a dilettante. What do you think about Don Imus getting fired? What about the right to free speech? Shouldn’t he be allowed to say whatever he wants? He has the right to free speech. And the companies that advertise on his show have a right to not support him. If you have an issue with that relationship, blame it on the fact that there are...

Three local women were arrested this week on charges that they scammed 13 people out of as much as $20,000 by falsely promising them telephone counseling with Dr. Phil McGraw, his wife Robin and television psychic Sylvia Browne. According to the indictment, the women — Ann Theresa Stevens, Serena Stevens and Cher Evans — set up fake toll-free phone numbers for the Dr. Phil show and Browne last fall; when people would call, they would...

The last time we brought you Social-ist, we nearly ended up on National TV. Keyword being "nearly." But thanks to the damn terrorists, our appearance was shelved. We swear! Some people's priorities! Last night Houstonist scoped out Houston's own Project Runway winner Chloe Dao's Rice Village shop, Lot 8, for a Dress for Success fundraiser. From our count, most of the boutique's namesake, the eight Dao sisters, were in attendance, including sister Sydney, who can...

Every once in awhile, Houstonist gets an invite to a sneak peek on how the other half lives, parties, and rubs elbows. Last night, as IMG's Fashion Week visited the Bayou City, Houstonist was on hand to take in the newest spring fashions, and peruse among Houston's elite. Parked in a series of tents in front of the Waterwall, we arrived with our ultra-fabulous "Platinum $1200 tickets", which apparently gets you in to an...
