Several more venues are celebrating the holidays this week with showcases. The Meridian is hosting the annual Holiday Babes Christmas Party tomorrow night with our favorite local musical babe, Katie Stuckey. Verizon Wireless will be a haven for country singer/songwriter lovers tomorrow night (includes Roger Creager and Bruce Robinson). Warehouse Live celebrates twice with the Jingle Balls Friday night, showcasing local favorites Paris Green and Glass Intrepid, and their annual Eve of Christmas Eve party Sunday night with The Machos.

Monday: Movie night!! MFAH (1001 Bissonnet St.) continues their $7 'Movies Houstonians Love' series with a pick by Dr. John H. Lienhard (the dude from NPR's Engines of Our Ingenuity) - No Highway in the Sky. Afterwards, steak night at Baba Yega (2607 Grant...

Good morning, Houston. Well, uh here's something you don't hear about every day — but it being Halloween and all, we couldn't resist: In Hunt County, police pulled over an 18-wheeler Sunday morning and found about two dozen human heads in the back. True story. But it's not what you think: Turns out the heads (which were embalmed) were specimens used in medical training in Fort Worth, and they were headed back to a...

Good morning, Houston. Suppose you're trying to keep up with piles and piles of government reports. How can you tell when there are too many? Simple: You ask for a report, of course. That's what the Texas State Library and Archives Commission did — and in a 668-page report, the commission has declared that the state is over-reported. The commission looked at more than 170 state agencies and universities and found more than 1,600...

The Red Sox has permeated nearly every facet of Bostonist's lives. When they're not live-blogging the games, waxing poetic about the games, thanking Curt Schilling for his splendid work, or telling Dane Cook to watch his hair, they're watching certain presidential candidates hop on the Red Sox bandwagon (sorry, Gothamist). The Sox are so branded on the local brain that people are using the Series to spice up their sex lives. Speaking of spice, Bostonist...

Good morning, Houston. Looks like our freewheeling land-use policies have gotten some national attention: The Wall Street Journal has a story focusing on the proposed residential tower at Bissonnet and Ashby. "The condo-tower dustup is just the latest in a string of odd situations allowed by Houston's lenient land-use rules," the article explains. "Rowdy cantinas, rock-crushing operations and commercial dumps sometimes pop up in residential neighborhoods. Condo towers sprout next to schools. A pay-by-the-hour...

How does a band with "Church" in its name end up playing more dive bars than youth groups? That's what we set out to discover in our conversation with The Woodlands-based group The Church of Philadelphia. Their sound is evocative of some of the big names in indie rock and Americana, and ranges from foot-stomping hoe-downs to hauntingly dreary dirges. Houstonist had the opportunity to sit down with members Brian Tharpe and Joey Matthews (they...

Yesterday, members of the Caribbean Impact Foundation, a local non-profit organization, stood before the International Liaison and Protocol Committee to request that the city name this week Caribbean Relief Week due to the devastating effects Hurricane Dean had on many Caribbean nations. The mayor issued the proclamation and encouraged Houstonians to do what they can to aid the relief work: Houstonians have always shown a big heart in times of need, and I know they...

Good morning, Houston. We've always wondered about our lady friends' uncanny ability to find food — particularly food they claim they shouldn't be eating — and now there's scientific evidence that women may actually have a built-in talent for locating grub. The news comes from The Daily Telegraph in the UK, which reports that women at a farmers' market were much better at finding a stall where they had bought a certain food than...

No, not that Pelosi, but her daughter, Alexandra Pelosi, will stop through Houston tomorrow as part of theThe Texas Freedom Network 2007 Faith & Freedom Speaker Series. At Downtown's Christ Church Cathedral [1117 Texas Ave.], the producer will screen her award-winning film Friends of God: A Road Trip with Alexandra Pelosi followed by a conversation with Pelosi as she gives a firsthand account of her memorable encounters with prominent leaders of the religious right. The...

Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor Graustark. This shot is of construction of a downtown church. In the photograph's comments, Graustark stated that she liked the stairs. We have to admit that they drew us to this image also. If you have a passion for Houston and photography, consider joining over 350 of Houston's best photographers in the Houstonist Flickr Photo Group. If Houstonist uses your photo...

Chicagoist is gearing up for this weekend's annual Air & Water Show along the lakefront. In what's becoming an annual tradition around there, staff member Todd McClamroch even got to fly with one of the participants. Chicagoist's decidedly opinionated readership was also appalled that one of their staffers found a popular local brewpub to be a great place to bring a kid. They also think that an unlikely activist for immigration rights should just take...

GHPA Walking Tour: Old Sixth Ward In perfect timing with last week's City Council designation of Old SIxth Ward as Houston's first and only Protected Historic District, the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance will hold it's monthly walking tour this afternoon in the historic neighborhood. On the second Sunday of every month, GHPA presents a docent-guided walking tour of an architecturally and/or historically significant area of Houston. $10 per person ($7 for GHPA members). Reservations are...

So the Draft Environmental Impact Study for Metro's proposed University light rail line has been released — a lot of information that a lot of people will be poring over. Fortunately, Christof at Intermodality has a summary of the DEIS for the line's western segment already, and here's what he found: There are three alignment options for the Main-to-Hillcroft segment of the University Line: Richmond to Cummins to Westpark, Richmond to Greenway to Westpark, and...

Good morning, Houston. Sure, we've had a lot of rain, but there haven't been any hurricane scares yet — so it's pretty easy to overlook the fact that we're headed into the peak of the 2007 hurricane season. Not that easy, though: The Chronicle's Eric Berger reminds us that there's still some storm activity in the Atlantic, including a system 650 miles east about 650 miles east of the southern Windward Islands that could...

After a five-alarm fire that was started by a window air conditioner ravaged a Channelview apartment building last Friday, 100+ tenants are searching for shelter. Although about 20 of the 80 units were untouched by the fire, the entire complex is without running water and electricity, leaving many people wondering what to do and where to go. A temporary shelter was set up after the fire, but was closed on Sunday because it was no...

Good morning, Houston. Have you wondered lately what Music World Entertainment founder Matthew Knowles is up to? You might never have guessed: He's releasing a new line of toys aimed at urban toddlers. The line is called Baby Jamz, and they're meant to be a twist on traditional kids' toys: "Think about it," Knowles told KTRK. "'Old McDonald' has been the same since we were kids. So what if we change 'Old McDonald' and...

The Voice Behind Harry Potter Makes Apperance & Tape-Signing So you spent all weekend ravenously getting through the final chapter in the Harry Potter series. Still hungry for more? Jim Dale, the narrator of all seven Harry Potter audiobooks will put on a performance and will be available to sign copies of the audiobook tonight at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church. Jim Dale became "The Toast of Broadway" [NY Times 1981] when he created...

Good morning, Houston. You know what today is, right? It's the day before what's apparently the most important book in the history of the world, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, is released. If you're a Harryhead and a fan of Katy, our neighbor to the west, you should be delighted to know that Katy has been named the "Harryest" town in Texas — the distinction that goes to the town that pre-ordered the...

Former Texas Southern University President Priscilla Slade is set to stand trial Aug. 10 on charges of misspending millions of dollars in public funds — but the trial's location could be up in the air. According to the AP, Slazde'a attorneys are asking for her trial to be moved to Travis County, saying heavy media coverage in Houston has "created a climate within this community where (Slade) can no longer obtain an unbiased jury of her peers." Prosecutors say they can find 12 unbiased people in Harris County — maybe they should start with the people who not-so-randomly called in to KCOH when Slade commandeered that station's morning show last spring, eh?

Good morning, Houston. We've seen various incarnations of Google, but this one was new to us. Blackle is a search engine that is very similar to Google, but with a darker color scheme. And it's not just Google for the depressed - it's meant to save energy. A predominantly black screen requires less energy to display than Google's white background. One blog said that Blackle could save 750 megawatt-hours a year (or $75,000), if...

Yep, you read that correctly. Sunday morning an inflatable blue elephant visited Bridge Community church in Galveston. The elephant is part of National Porn Sunday campaign which is trying to beat out battle the multibillion dollar Porn industry. All bad puns aside, the 25ft inflatable blue elephant is a symbol of the “elephant in the pew,” said J.R. Mahon, pastor of XXXChurch.com, which spearheads the National Porn Sunday movement. Although their website name seems...

The Bald Heretic had an interesting bit of doorspam this week. The spammers didn't want to trim his trees or sell him pizza though. They wanted him to worship with them.. at Tinseltown. Apparently, a local church left a flyer on his door that said first-time visitors to Celebration Worship (10:15 Sundays at the not-so-safe Tinseltown Westchase, if you're interested) with Church at the Cross receive a free movie ticket. We wonder what movie they'll...

Hay! Just when you thought you'd gotten all the festing you could, what with last weekend's Art Car fun, Houston's got even more to offer! This weekend features two - count 'em - two "country" themed festivals, as well as the Festival of Greece! And with Houstonist's weekend weather forecast predicting perfection, there's no reason to stay inside. Update that resume in June and enjoy some good two-digit temperature while it lasts. - Country Roots...

We noticed a news story yesterday about the city of Piney Point Village's plan to move its city hall to a $1.5 million, 7,000-square-foot mansion — a plan that isn't sitting well with some of the neighbors. KPRC had more on the story yesterday, and it looks like Piney Pointers aren't getting any happier. The basic idea is this: The city wants to move its offices to the six bedroom, six and a half bath...

We're sure glad that City Council isn't our mom - they're strict. Yesterday, the council decided in an 11-3 vote that children 16 and under must be off the streets by 11 pm on weeknights. The previous curfew was midnight, which still applies to Fridays and Saturdays. There are a number of exceptions, including children who are accompanied by a parent or participating in school or church-sponsored events. Those delinquents who violate the rule will...

Jurors on Thursday found former Texas Southern University CFO Quintin Wiggins guilty of misspending nearly $300,000 in public funds on furniture, landscaping and a security system for the private home of former university President Priscilla Slade. The conviction means Wiggins could face life in prison — and it's probably not too good for Slade, who is scheduled to go on trial in August, either.

The African Children's Choir, which is made up of children ages 7 - 11 who are all orphans of the AIDS pandemic and civil violence in Uganda and other countries, will be performing at two very prestigious venues tonight and again on Sunday. Tonight's performance is on FOX's American Idol. This is part of a special "Idol Gives Back" episode. During the show, viewers can make their donations to the Charity Projects Entertainment Fund by...

Here are some upcoming shows that were recently announced: Norah Jones – 6/12 @ Jones Hall Dave Matthews Band/Robert Earl Keen – 9/21 @ Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion The highlight of the week has to be indie-band Clap Your Hands Say Yeah's show Thursday night at Warehouse Live. However, some of the graying crowd may prefer the combo of Chicago and Kool & the Gang in The Woodlands on Friday (and we wonder how...
