Okay, so, it's January and it's been hitting the 70's all week (degrees, that is...not the era). We've had to restrain ourselves from whacking all of the dead vegetation in the yard. It's still much to early for that, we're waiting for Valentine's, nothing says "love" like a good pair of garden loppers. So, since it's so marvelous outside, we need a refreshing cocktail for our weekend. We're anticipating the AFC and NFC championship games this Sunday and dreaming of Super Bowl nibbles to make for the party. All this makes us thirsty. Anvil Bar & Refuge is open for business pouring old-fashioned cocktails and refreshing libations. Houstonist has been anticipating the opening of Anvil since the Poison Girl Classic American Cocktail Gathering back in December, which featured the former Beaver’s team, now Anvil owners/bartenders, manning the bar and promoting some classic favorites.

Houstonist recently spent a Saturday evening downtown at the grand opening of McCormick & Schmick, the popular steak and seafood chain, at the newest attraction downtown: the Houston Pavillions. Titus Andronicus, that epic tale of vengeance set in 4th century Rome, is widely-regarded as Shakespeare's most violent play, with rampant and excessive scenes of murder, dismemberment, torture, filicide, rape, exsanguination, blood-filled pies and even the execution of a clown. It would be almost hilarious in its hyperbole if the play itself weren't so deadly and gruesomely serious.
If you're still mistakenly laboring under the impression that ballet is dry, dusty and boring, the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater would like the chance to persuade you otherwise.
Wherever you may be headed tonight, make sure to at least do a fly-by at the Contemporary Arts Museum so you don't kick yourself later for missing Steel Lounge Underground.
