Ahoy! Houston, tomorrow is International Talk Like a Pirate Day! We were sussing out some rum recipes and the fine folks at Cruzan provided a good one. Perfect for watching some college football and yelling pirate-isms at the television. Shiver me timbers, the Cougars are off this week resting up from their huge win over the OSU Cowboys. AARRRRR, University of Texas is playing Texas Tech tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. and the mateys at Rice are tackling OSU tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. The Aggies take on Utah State at 6:00 p.m., as well. Whip up some of these delicious cocktails tomorrow afternoon and prepare a fine list of pirate insults to lob at the tv. Yeah, it sounds retarded - but, if you impose a "pirate talk only" rule, it'll be damn entertaining!!

Apparently competing to find the most thankless college football head coaching position in the state of Texas, University of Houston head coach Art Briles today accepted the Baylor job that was made vacant by the firing of Guy Morriss last week. Briles' contract with Baylor will extend through seven losing seasons at $1.8 million dollars per losing season. Cougar athletic director and all around quote machine Dave Maggard has said that Briles will leave immediately,...
Houston vs. Dallas. Does anything else need to be said? Robertson Stadium, which is located on the campus of the University of Houston, will be hosting two different versions of this great Texas rivalry. Tonight, the 2006 MLS Champion Houston Dynamo will take on FC Dallas in the second game of this home-and-home Western Conference semi-final playoff game. In the first game, which FC Dallas hosted, the Hoops took game 1 of this aggregate-scoring...
Every week, usually on Mondays (sue us), Houstonist braves the wilds of the internets to bring you a summary of what people on sports blogs are saying about your hometown teams: -Shasta, the UH Cougar mascot has responded to the assault at the wings/hands of the Oregon Duck from the first week of the college football season. Sounds like he's got a pretty good attitude about it. - The Colts-Texans game took place on "Deep...
It's an annual rite of fall, the one time each year that people in Houston care about Rice football. Yes,tonight in Austin, the number 8 ranked Texas Longhorns will play the Rice Owls in what promises to be a blowout football game. Longhorn fans and alumni from across the city will descend on the sports bars in droves, ready to feast on the blood of the Owls, who are just happy for the national tv...
Everyone knows that the Dynamo plays their games at a college football stadium, but did you know that they actually encourage college students to attend the games? It's amazing, but true! In particular, tomorrow night's match against Real Salt Lake (not to be confused with Imitation Salt Lake, which tastes about the same but has less sodium) is College Night for the Dynamo. The game starts at 7:30PM, and admission is just ten bucks with...
Houstonist is reporting to you today live from Relaint Stadium for the 72nd annual NFL draft. With the 10th pick, the Houston Texans drafted Louisville defensive tackle Amobi Okoye, the youngest player ever drafted at 19-years old. Okoye was a unamimous 2006 All-Big East selection on defense while recording 49 tackles (12 for a loss) with six sacks. For his career at Louisville, Okoye registered 121 tackles and 10 1/2 sacks to boast. His...
Good morning, Houston! Two, four, six, eight ... yeah, whatever, we weren't cheerleaders. But those of you who were (or those of you who are cheerleader fans — no more needs to be said about that) should be excited to know that Houston is one of the finalists to be home of the Cheerleader Hall of Fame. We're up against Ohio, Kentucky, California, Florida and another city in Texas for the Hall of Fame,...
It seems that skipping class has gotten a lot more complicated since Houstonist was in high school. Back then we just had our friend with the most motherly handwriting give us a note for our bi-weekly dentist appointment. The administrators of Ball High School in Galveston must have heard of our fool proof system, as they are preparing to launch a system of their own that will place a "tattle-tale" call to parents for every student marked absent when a teacher takes roll.
Houstonist loves the fall in Southeast Texas. There’s a slight nip in the normally muggy air, the leaves are changing and college football is heating up like the livingroom fireplace. Let’s not forget the weeks of delicious roasted turkey and pumpkin pie. We could do without Aunt Millie’s bearded kisses and Grandpa’s pipe, but somehow it all goes together. To make the games more cheerful, the pie more tasty and the kisses more tolerable, we...
DCist is screwed in the event of an oil crisis. Not that we're not all screwed in the event of an oil crisis, just D.C. is more screwed. Don't sell your car yet, District resident, a cabbie can kick you to the curb if he doesn't like your address. Not even Metro can save you now. Londonist experiences the London of the future through the wonders of 3D modeling, but while the 3D guys are...
College Football Saturdays will be a little more like Pro Football Sundays this coming season. The NCAA approved a proposal Tuesday from the Football Rules Committee allowing coaches to challenge on-field rulings. The new rule will work just like the NFL version, in that if the coach's challenge is successful, that team will not be charged a timeout.
The greatest time of the year is now upon us. It's December! Stockings are hung by the chimney with care, the Galleria is overrun by rabid shoppers, there is a nip in the air (if you consider 80 degrees nippy), office holiday parties (a Houstonist favorite) are in full swing and so are college football bowl games. 2005 is extra special since the Longhorns wrapped their gift to Mack Brown on Saturday and are headed to Tinseltown for the granddaddy of 'em all, the Rose Bowl, for the national championship. Life is grand!
In the natural world, longhorns and buffalo are distant cousins. In college football, they're very, very, very distant. Since the Big 12 Championship game is all that stands between the Texas Longhorns and a change for all the marbles, in the end, they will be even farther. The 'Horns line up against a Colorado Buffaloes team representing the Big 12 North Division for a second straight year. Unfortunately for the Buffs, who's on the opposing...
