Local tech news in a compact, digital format. Snapstream Ships Beyond TV 4.7 Houstonist loves TV, we also love our iPods and iPhones. We just love technology. So we couldn't be more excited to bring you this bit of news from local software giants Snapstream. It's the release of Beyond TV 4.7 software with automatic iPod and iPhone syncing! What is this you ask? Let us break it down for you. It's PVR software...
We're not sure whether it was something in the air or what, but something seems to have made Houstonians decide to crash into each other (and, in a couple of cases, walls) on area roads last night. First there was the guy who backed through a wall of the Houston House parking garage — we already talked about that — and then, around 8 p.m., a driver crashed into an Indian restaurant at Dairy Ashford...
With a Mexican food restaurant on nearly every corner of our fair city, it can be difficult to find any standouts among the crowd. Houstonist recently visited Sylvia’s enchilada kitchen for lunch and can safely say this is a hidden gem for Mexican food. Located at 12637 Westheimer (between Eldridge and Dairy Ashford) the lunch rush comes from the Westchase District and Energy Corridor crowds (think liquid lunch meets power lunch). As the name suggests...
Good morning, Houston. We initially kicked off the day with a story about warnings of tainted fish in Clear Lake, but it turns out it's not the Clear Lake around here — it's one in Panola County, East Texas. Two Clear Lakes? Who knew? (We would have, had we checked online. Oops.) So you'll be happy to know that there aren't any seafood warnings out for our area, but that doesn't mean we're not...
A note for anybody who might be headed out to west Houston this weekend: the Katy Freeway will be closed in both directions between Eldridge Parkway and Highway 6 beginning at 9 p.m. tonight. Drivers on the freeway will be diverted to the frontage roads — so you will be able to get through, theoretically, but we recommend not trying it unless you have a lot of extra time and nerves of steel.
As if you didn't have enough good reasons to avoid Uptown on a weekend, here's another one for you: major traffic closures on the West Loop. What, that wasn't enough to get your attention? All right, then, the details: The ramp from the West Loop northbound to the Katy Freeway in both directions will be closed from 9 p.m. today to 5 a.m. Saturday. One lane of the ramps from the Katy Freeway (both directions)...
Now, seriously — is there anything more fun than stupid criminals? (The times you used to load up on Pop Rocks and ride the teacups at AstroWorld don't count. Or was that just us?) Today, KPRC brings us the story of a couple of would-be fugitives who apparently didn't read the part of the car-chase manual where it says not to lead the police to your own house.
As the saying goes, there's nothing like a crime spree/police chase to end the week with a bang. And we had a pretty good one this morning that started when an armed man and woman tried to rob and carjack a man in southwest Houston. The attempted robbery happened near Brighton Lane and Murphy Road; the couple fired a shot and grazed the victim, then left the scene. On their way out, they hit a car at Murphy and Highway 59, which led a Meadows Place police officer to try to pull them over.
There was a news story Friday that fascinated Houstonist, but we didn't get to comment on it: the tale of a playground that burned down because of a reflection off a mirror. You know, the same way you can fry an ant with a magnifying class — which, incidentally, is something Houstonist would never do. We'd also never set a playground on fire, for that matter.
It's not going to be the best weekend for driving in Houston: Three major freeway closures and a few minor detours will undoubedtly tie up traffic. It seems that, no matter how much Houstonians hear about closures, they drive right into them anyway — so Houstonist is giving you the chance to be smarter than your fellow motorists by avoiding these spots altogether:
Though Houston police officers often write tickets for motorists with expired registrations, inspection stickers and missing license plates, some officers are breaking those laws themselves, a KPRC investigation found.
