More today on Shelby Sendelbach, the 12-year-old Katy junior high student who was shipped off to alternative school for writing a love message in marker on a gymnasium wall: The Katy ISD is now reconsidering its punishment. "I am looking at what happened and what options we have per state law and local policy," Katy Superintendent Alton Frailey told the Chronicle. "It is always my practice to follow the law and policy while looking out...

Good morning, Houston. Remember Radar, the adorable Channel 2 weather dog? If you're a Ken Hoffman reader, we can't imagine how you'd forget. It turns out someone in Tyler was a big fan of the idea: a TV station there has their own weather dog, Stormy. Stormy serves a function similar to Radar's and also wears an American flag bandana and takes ridiculous pictures. Just another reason to be glad you don't live in...
Google recently announced two exciting new features. One is street view, a new feature of Google Maps, which allows you to see street-side views of locations in many major cities. Right now, the feature is available only in San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas, Miami, and Denver, and there are plenty of interesting things to be seen, aside from the feature being helpful if you're traveling to a new location. Google has also started incorporating...
One of this week's most popular blogging topics was Senator Dan Patrick's trip to Hooter's. Miya Shay broke the story on her Houston Political Blog. It was re-blogged by Burnt Orange Report and several other Texas political blogs. Lone Star Times responded to the slight uproar that had been created in good humor, referring to the incident as "Fried Pickle-Gate," because Senator Patrick was at Hooter's with his son and his girlfriend, who likes the...
State Sen. Dan Patrick (R-Houston) caused a bit of a stir at the Capitol yesterday when he walked out of the Senate chamber so he wouldn't have to be present as an Islamic spiritual leader delivered the opening prayer. Patrick said he didn't have a problem with Imam Yusuf Kavakci of Dallas giving the invocation, but that didn't mean that he had to stay in the room while it was going on: "It is important...
No, we're not kidding. In what was meant to be an effort to reduce the incidence of abortion in Texas, the lovable State Sen. Dan Patrick has come up with a bill to pay $500 to mothers who give their babies up for adoption within sixty days of birth. But wait a minute, isn't that baby-selling (and really cheap baby-selling)? Don't worry - the bill states that "Section 25.08, Penal Code, does not apply to...
As expected, transportation consultant and former state representative Ed Emmett took over as Harris County judge yesterday, replacing outgoing judge Robert Eckels. Emmett won the post on a 4-1 vote of the county Commssioners Court: The only "no" vote came from Commissioner Sylvia Garcia, who said she was voting against Emmett because she preferred to appoint someone who wouldn't seek to be elected to the office next year. Garcia later changed her vote to make the appointment unanimous.
What could be more fun than building another Texas prison? Building one in Mexico, says Sen. Craig Estes, north Texas state senator and fertilizer magnate, in his recent Bill SB 185. The very hypothetical prisons would be intended for Mexican nationals doing time for nonviolent crimes.
The Dallas Morning News reports today that some state legislators are taking steps to make sure abortions become illegal in Texas if the U.S. Supreme Court ever overturns Roe v. Wade. State Sen. Dan Patrick, who was sworn in as a senator Tuesday, has filed a so-called "trigger bill" that would take effect if the Supreme Court should reverse its position on abortion. It's a change Patrick said is coming: "Many of us on the...
Just when we thought morons weren't born every minute, we watched the Celebrity Stupidity Race heat up last week with racial comments from Michael Irvin arriving on the heels of Michael Richards' racially charged comedy club meltdown. Irvin appologized yesterday on the Dan Patrick Show for the comments he made last week on the same show. In case you missed it, last Wednesday Irvin suggested that Dallas Cowboy quarterback Tony Romo may owe his...
