>> Poll shows split over Clemens, McNamee: The court of public opinion currently stands divided in Harris County regarding the Roger Clemens steroid scandal according to a poll by The Chronicle. According to the results published yesterday by David Barron, 35.5 percent said believed McNamee; 32.8 percent sided with The Rocket; and, 31.7 percent did not respond. The margin of error is listed at 4.1 percent. These numbers may prove initially encouraging for Clemens with a Justice Department investigation looming in his future. However, the data seems to indicate that his support base is less educated than McNamee's. Does it really seem hard to believe that someone kept a beer can, dirty gauze and a used syringe for seven years?

The 2008 NBA All Star team starting lineups were announced yesterday, and Houston’s very own Yao Ming proved to be a fan favorite. The Rockets’ big man was voted in as the starting center for the Western Conference squad, ahead of such luminaries as Amare Stoudemire (2nd leading vote-getter amongst Western Conference centers), reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year - Marcus Camby (3rd), and Pau Gasol (6th).

After assistant head coach Mike Sherman left the Texans for College Station and the Texas A&M job, Texans head coach Gary Kubiak was tasked with finding a replacement for the architect of his offense. Though Kubes is himself a former offensive coordinator, he's made a practice of surrounding himself with other top-tier assistants ever since he took the Texans job.

Football on a Thursday? Does this mean we have to skip 30 Rock? Damn, this is a hard decision. Gary Kubiak vs. Jack Donaghy. Sage Rosenfels vs. Judah Freidlander. Texans Cheerleaders vs. our completely defensible crush on Tina Fey. Tracy Jordan vs. Travis Henry's illegitmate children. Mike Shannahan's hair vs. the Sheinhart Wig Company. Who are we kidding? You can watch 30 Rock any time on NBC's website. It's like Tivo for poor people! The...

From local Houston headlines, we bring you these weekend news bits... • A woman was kidnapped during a home invasion overnight, but was later released. • The Rockets broke their six game losing streak last night with a win over Denver. • Local toy drives are scrutinizing donated toys. • Are HISD libraries understocked? • One of the U.S. Marshall's 15 most wanted fugitives was caught in Pearland. • Three teens have been arrested...

Not that this performance will get him the kind of endorsement dollars that Reggie Bush has gotten since they both came into the league last year, but Mario Williams just plain clowned Bush yesterday. Super Mario had six tackles including four of The Greatest Running Back Ever himself. Reggie's stat line for the game: 34 yards rushing on 15 carries, and 2 fumbles. Take that, draft pundits. Of course, the real big story from the...

This past Sunday, Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett was very nearly paralyzed in a brutal on-field collision during the Bills' game against the Denver Broncos. Doctors originally thought that chances of a full recovery were 80-90% against, with a strong possibility that he would be a quadrapeligic; today, the Port Arthur-raised Everett is moving his limbs and breathing on his own, and his family and doctors are optimistic for a full recovery. Everett played...

We've long known that Houston was a popular place for singles to relocate (and rightly so), but here's some new news: according to this map, we've got more than our fair share of single men. A LOT more than our fair share - that big blue dot = 20,000 - 40,000 more single men than women. Men in Austin and the DFW metropolis suffer similarly. So why the disparity? Creative Class commenters had a few...

Google recently announced two exciting new features. One is street view, a new feature of Google Maps, which allows you to see street-side views of locations in many major cities. Right now, the feature is available only in San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas, Miami, and Denver, and there are plenty of interesting things to be seen, aside from the feature being helpful if you're traveling to a new location. Google has also started incorporating...

Fromholz will speak at the event and read from a collection of his poetry. With a career spanning more than 40 years and involving the likes of Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, John Denver and Jerry Jeff Walker, Fromholz’...

Good morning, Houston. Ever been to Podunk, Texas? You have if you've ever visited the east Houston neighborhood of Denver Harbor, which was affectionately called Podunk during the Great Depression because it was then far enough east to seem semi-rural. And as of yesterday, thanks to a state House resolution, Podunk is the Official Mythical Town of Texas. Grady got the resolution passed by gathering 700 signatures on a petition and persuading the area's...

The Dynamo have traded forward Alejandro Moreno to the Columbus Crew for mid-field forward Joseph Ngwenya. While Moreno has been struggling this season, he was huge asset to the Dynamo during last season’s championship run, with several key assists during the playoffs. Ngwenya, originally from Zimbabwe, was impressive last season for Columbus with 5 goals and threee assists and is known for his “versatility and speed”. This move comes after a dreary start to the...

The Houston Texans have known their list of opponents for months, but did not have dates for games until today when the NFL published the regular season schedules for 2007. The Texans face several noteworthy opponents on their home turf this season. The home and season opener looks to be winnable with the Kansas City Chiefs visiting on September 9th. Competition kicks it up a notch as Peyton and the Colts land on the 23rd...

Big news in Houston this weekend: the Blessed Virgin Mary, that holy trickster known for showing up in all sorts of unexpected places, chose to make an appearance on a pizza pan in a local elementary school kitchen. It happened on Ash Wednesday when Guadalupe Rodriguez, a cafeteria worker at Pugh Elementary, was washing the pizza pan in question and noticed a stubborn stain. "On the third rinse I started watching it, trying to discover...

During last night’s Super Bowl, you may have seen the commercials for the upcoming Grammy Awards, where Justin Timberlake is given your average, everyday person a chance to sing with him on stage at the event. Secretly, we thought to ourselves, it’d be fun to win that contest and get Justin to bring sexyback to some old, I don’t know, maybe John Denver, while JT gets his groove on the stage. Well, a local girl...

Surely you remember Pizza Patrón, the Dallas-based pizza chain that started accepting Mexican pesos as well as U.S. dollars this week in a dual-currency trial program. Well, you're not the only one: Since it announced the program, Pizza Patrón has gotten a slew of hate mail and death threats, the AP reports. Who knew people would get so upset that they would threaten to kill a pizza restaurant?

Back in June, we heard that Six Flags was planning to sell or close several of its properties, including Houston's Splashtown. And sure enough, the company is selling Splashtown and six other parks in a $312 million deal. The parks' new owner, PARC 7F-Operations Corp. of Jacksonville, Fla., will immediately sell them to CNL Income Properties, then will lease them from CNL. Whatever.

So here's something a little disturbing: Sepia Photo, a Cypress-based operator of mall Santa photo booths, is planning to improve its Santa-screening process after discovering a sex offender working in one of its Santa booths at a Denver-area mall.

If you didn't get enough of skeletons this Halloween, don't worry. The Houston Museum of Natural Science spent four years in negotiation with the Ethopian government to bring Lucy, one of the world's most famous skeletons, to the United States. Lucy was a hominid who lived 3-4 millions years ago. Her skeleton was unearthed in Ethiopia in 1974 and has only been on public display twice, both in Ethopia. A replica is on display currently,...

We were starting to wonder whether anything was going to happen with Houston Pavilions, the retail/entertainment/residential/office complex planned for three blocks on the south end of downtown. After all, the land sale was completed in mid-January, and we haven't heard much since House of Blues and Lucky Strike signed on as tenants. But now there is news: The developers have secured $140 million in financing and groundbreaking is set for Nov. 6.

OK, thunder gang: another weekend, another football battle. If last week, Houstonist reminded you that Philadelphia had a team of some note, this installment should come as a surprise to none. The Indianapolis Colts are on the short list for NFL’s best teams, and with good reason. They’ve got an absolutely lethal offense, a defense custom-built by Tony Dungy, and oh yeah, possibly the most technically proficient quarterback in pigskin history. Did we mention that they made a serious run at the 1972 Dolphins’ perfect record last year? colts-touchdown-sundae-758137.jpg So, fair readers, it’s mighty unlikely that this Sunday’s trip to Coltdome will yield a Texans’ victory. But that’s not to say it won’t be a game well worth watching, mostly because of the Six Things You Must Know About Indy’s Colts.

The Dixie Chicks' new album Taking the Long Way is appropriately titled, considering the winding route their tour has taken — particularly if you're in Houston. The Chicks have officially announced that they are cancelling a number of tour dates including the stop at the Toyota Center originally scheduled for Sept. 30. Other cities on the tour that have had shows cancelled include Kansas City, Memphis, St. Louis and Knoxville; the band is pushing back...

If you've recently been dumped by someone who told you, "It's not you," well, take heart: Maybe it's really not you. Maybe it's the city you live in. Forbes has released its list of Best Cities for Singles 2006, and Houston ranks a rather lonely 34th out of 40, a sharp drop from last year's ranking at No. 17. You know what that means? That means Milwaukee, Sacramento and Detroit are all more happenin' places...

First Six Flags shut down AstroWorld, and now it's talking about closing Splashtown, too. It makes us wonder: Why doesn't Six Flags want Houstonians to have fun?

And the water keeps coming: The Chronicle is now reporting that as much as 10.5 inches of rain has fallen on parts of the Houston area today, and there's more on the way. Among the hardest-hit areas is the east side, where the Red Cross has opened shelters at Channelview High School and Denver Harbor Community Center (6402 Market St.) and is looking at opening others. Near Hobby Airport and Pasadena, 6 inches of rain fell in 75 minutes this morning; neighborhoods along the Gulf Freeway in that area remain flooded now. Across the city, bayous are at or near capacity (including White Oak Bayou, which is now out of its banks near downtown) and health officials are warning people to look out for floating debris and snakes.

Sculptor Luis Jiménez, known for his grand works of art, left this world on Tuesday because of an accident in his Hondo, New Mexico studio. He was working on a commissioned fiberglass piece for the Denver airport. Houstonians may know him best for Vaquero, which is a tribute to cowboys that welcomes visitors to Moody Park. He was also a professor of painting and sculpture at the University of Houston. Born in El Paso, TX,...

Texans coach Gary Kubiak will soon have a familiar face pacing the sidelines when Broncos Assistant GM Rick Smith is introduced as new general manager. Smith has reportedly come to an agreement with owner Bob McNair over the weekend and a formal announcement is expected later today.

Houstonist would be ecstatic if Dave Chappelle came back for another season on Comedy Central and did a Charlie Murphyesque parody of Charley Casserly. Perhaps it could be a True Houston Story about how the Texans came to picking Mario Williams, but we digress. Charley Casserly resigned his position of Texans General Manager yesterday, citing his wish to pursue a position with the NFL’s front office. In the face of rumors that Casserly had been...

Today's Chronicle has more on Lucky Strike, the upscale "bowling lounge" that recently signed on as a tenant in the proposed Houston Pavilions complex downtown. Houstonist has long been a fan of Palace Lanes, so we were interested to hear how Lucky Strike will stack up: Unlike tenpin alleys of the past, Lucky Strike allows people to sip martinis on elegant modern couches. In fact, Lucky Strike calls itself a bowling lounge, not a bowling...

The future Houston Pavilions shopping and enrtertainment complex downtown has a new tenant: Lucky Strike, an upscale Hollywood-based bowling alley and bar. Lucky Strike will join anchor tenant House of Blues in the three-block development at Main and Dallas.
