Nothing says "rodeo" quite like a manufactured Disney pop star, and the Houston Live Stock and Rodeo's organizers know that. That's why they booked Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus for the March 9th slot in the program. The fact that having Hannah Montana on the bill is a sure-fire recipe for making parents' wallets hemorrhage probably played a role, too.

Happy Holidays Houston! If you can stand more excitement after all of the festivities this week, we suggest tuning in for a re-airing of Justice's awesome "performance" on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and a brand spanking new Austin City Limits with Bloc Party and Ghostland Observatory.
When a bye week is one of the highlights of your team's football season simply because no one got hurt, you know that the rest of the season won't be much to write home about. Given that this is exactly the position that Texans fans find themselves in, it's at least comforting that they're coming out of the bye week to face a team almost as disappointing as the Texans. After an inspiring 2006...
This has been making the rounds on the sports blogs this week, and we were a little hesitant to show it here lest we rile up any University of Houston grads. But we're feeling sassy today at Houstonist, so here's a clip from the sidelines at U of H's opener at Oregon:
So, Houston cable subscribers, the much-talked-about day is here: Today, Time Warner cable service in the city officially becomes Comcast cable service. Feel any different yet? You probably won't unless you go looking for the TV Guide Channel or west coast feeds of the Disney Channel and Encore, which have been dropped from the cable lineup. In their place are 20 new channels, some of which KHOU has listed: high-definition versions of Starz, The Golf...
Good morning, Houston. Are you registered to vote in the May 12 special election? If not, you'd better get on it: Harris County residents must deliver their registration applications to a county tax office by 4:45 p.m. today or have them postmarked before midnight tonight. Remember, if you don't vote, you give up your right to complain. And we will enforce that. >> New organs, a new life: Maria Mendez, a 14-year-old girl, is...
Today’s Photo of the Day comes from flickr user and Houstonist photo contributor slight clutter. I'll let the photographer's comment on this image speak for this photo... Beyond Borders Just a little tidbit about the place I call home... Often overlooked as a world-class city, Houston is one of the most culturally-diverse cities in the United States with a demographic in which everyone is part of a population-based minority (37.9% Anglo, 37.8% Hispanic, 17.8%...
Forget pepper spray and guns: In one homeowner's case, all that was required to send home invaders running early this morning was a broomstick. (And no, it wasn't one of those weird Disney broomsticks that came to life and carried buckets of water around — though we admit, that would come in handy sometimes.)
A good week in Houston for jazz lovers. The most popular young jazz trumpeter (and heartthrob, so we hear) Chris Botti visits the Verizon Wireless Theater tonight. You can also catch local jazz singer Kimberly Longstreth tonight at her weekly appearance at The Corkscrew. You can also catch local classic Ezra Charles at the Duck and the newer jazz outfit Skyblue72 at Sansone’s For those with kids, there’s Disney’s Doodlbops this weekend at Toyota...
Come on, you've got ten bucks to spare. Even we have ten bucks to spare, and nobody pays us. Here's how we'll be spending ours.... Saturday, November 11 The Flamenco Poets Society and Casa Ramirez Folk Art Gallery present Lorca: Poetry & Dance, a billingual reading in Spanish and English with a dance component. Houstonist didn't even know we had a Flamenco Poet's Society, but since we do, this is what we're planning to check...
Let's take a look back at a week that raised this Zen koan: if Kevin Federline got into a wrestling ring with a wrestler, who would you root for? Austinist was in an entertainment state of mind as they covered the dickens out of the Austin Film Festival, depicted all the Big 12 football coaches as South Park characters, and interviewed Jose Gonzalez. Chicagoist talked about the passion as they bid adieu to Bell...
Want to take a nostalgic trip into the past and see how your grandparents embraced new technology around the house? Then check out the Designing Domesticity: Industrial Design for Modern Living, 1930 – 1960 exhibit at the University of Houston's College of Architecture.
A more unconventional opening is Idlewild, an original musical starring the members of Grammy-winning group OutKast. Set in a 1930s speakeasy, the movie uses stunningly choreographed dance numbers and original song to tell the story of the speakeasy's pianist and it's manager, each played by one of the two OutKast boys. Its surreal blend of musicals past and present with an old-fashioned story and gorgeous production values has received strong notices from industry publications like Variety, which said that the movie "achieves magic -- something sorely missing from so many movies these days -- and does so via a philosophy of respect, but not reverence, for what's come before it'".......Sigh. Houstonist thought we just had a stupid comedy in the vein of Anchorman and Dodgeball? If you want another, though, there's Beerfest, from the self-proclaimed idiots who brought you Supertroopers. The films promotional materials tells us that ". When American brothers Todd and Jan Wolfhouse (Erik Stolhanske and Paul Soter) are sent to Germany on a mission to spread their grandfather's ashes at Oktoberfest, they stumble upon a super-secret, centuries-old, underground beer games competition-Beerfest-the Olympics of beer drinking." We'll leave it at that......
Is the Scripps National Spelling Bee ready for primetime television? Disney Executives seem to think so, and thus are furiously flexing their media muscle to make sure America tunes in to ABC for the championship rounds. ESPN is all over the event, posting several stories on tonight's competition, and even going so far to predict the top eight to assist those who wish to gamble on the results. According to Darren Rovell at ESPN, the...
Fun with Dick and Jane: Directed by Dean Parisot, starring Tea Leoni, Jim Carrey, Alec Baldwin. Open letter to Jim Carrey: Please stop making these torturing, face-contorting at weird angles, ills of suburban sprawl, silly films and return to the days of your Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Majestic brilliance. Please? Basically this 1970s remake is about a man who looses his job and fears his cushy lifestyle will disappear as well...

Gardening-enthusiasts can find more than 2,000 species of plants, including Texas natives, tropicals and unusual specialty species. • Fotofest International is in Houston through April 23. Co-founders Fredrick Balwin, who photographed Pablo Picasso, and Wendy Watriss bring famous photographers from all over the world to 120 exhibits in museums all over the city. Arbitron, the company that most radio stations use to determine ratings and listenership, announced that Houston will be the first market to use the new electronic survey system, the Portable People Meter (which reminds us of Disney World’s old PeopleMover or even Peter the Meter Reader). For more than 40 years, Arbitron has been sending out paper diaries similar to the one in the picture. The company would randomly flood the market with these...
When Houstonist was little, we took frequent school field trips to NASA's Johnson Space Center. That was before the flashy Disney visitors center — back then, they'd herd us into a circa-1962 wood-paneled conference room and tell us about how space shuttles were going to allow us to kick Soviet butt. Then they'd bring out a tiny fragment of moon rock and make a big deal about how we couldn't touch it. That led to...
