The Orange Show for Visionary Art is going to play host to another cross-cultural musical act this Saturday. This mix of very danceable Benga meets American funk or Kenyan-American Indie Rock should be a great time. Extra Golden formed in Nairobi when Ian Eagleson, guitarist, arrived to study benga, or Kenyan pop while earning a master's degree in ethnomusicology. Along with fellow guitarist Alex Minoff joined forces with members of Orchestra Extra Solar Africa and Extra Golden was born. Their debut release received critical acclaim and the band was dealt a devastating blow with the death of lead singer Otieno Jagwasi of AIDS complications. Opiyo Bilongo, benga vocalist, stepped in to help fill the role and Extra Golden pressed on.

Only a few times (a week) does Houstonist gets so excited about an event that we forget about this summer's deluge for a few moments. Weather was the last thing on our minds when our mother told us we found out about this event. More like, "weather" or not we should just go camp out now and wait for the opening. (Please don't let our contrived puns keep you from reading.) Perspectives 157: Xaviera Simmons,...
