Daily-ist Thursday: Josh Neufeld Presentation and Book Signing

Tonight at Domy Books illustrator Josh Neufeld will discuss his book A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge. The book is a portrait of 7 New Orleanians as they deal with the decision to stay or evacuate their homes in the face of Hurricane Katrina. Through his work, Neufeld is said to capture the frenzy, sorrow, and hope of New Orleans during those troubled days. A.D.: New Orleans After the Deluge has gotten rave reviews from Cornell West and Dave Eggers, and we'd listen to those guys 'cause they seem to know what they're talking about.

Daily-ist Tuesday: Houston Movies at Domy Books

Domy Books and Cinema Bomar present Our Wonderful Gulf Coast, a grab bag of locally made Houston-themed shorts and promotional films. The screening will begin at dusk with a selection of silent camera positives and working prints from a promotional film made by the Houston Chronicle. Many of the films date to the 1960s and 70s and will offer a look back at the Texas City Disaster, the computerization of the petrochemical industry, San Jacinto State Park, and oil rigs as marine environments. There is also a series of student films from U of H in the 70s and various local commercials from the 50s and 60s. If you go be sure to wear some insect repellent. The skeeters behind Domy are thirsty.

Daily-ist Tuesday: Girls Girls Girls

For the second night in a row, Domy Books plays host to an interesting night of film.

If you're anything like Houstonist, you can easily waste two hours of your life on the trailer show on HDNet, watching trailers from movies past and present and exclaiming to no one in particular, "Oh, The Departed. That was a really good movie!" You know the trailer show... Don't look at us like that.

When the night has come / And the land is dark / And the moon is the only / Light you see / No, I won't be afraid / No, I won't shed a tear / Just as long as you come / To Domy

Here are a few books Houstonist thinks your friends and family won't use for doorstops (that's the fruitcake, right?). Everyone likes a good read, or at least a smart-looking book to sit on the nightstand. Give these a try. And shop at your local independent bookstore -- they can give you even more recommendations, and probably a good cup of coffee as well.

Back in February of this year, Houstonist attended a screening of the 1983 ground-breaking documentary Style Wars, as part of the MFA's "Movies Houstonians Love" series. The film, presented by one half of UGK,Bun B, was screened to a sold out crowd of Houstonians, and was followed by more than an hour's worth of conversation surrounding Houston's underground music and art culture, that was co-led by Style Wars star and DJ legend, Kay Slay....

Free Movie Monday @ Domy Books It's no mystery that we love us some Domy Books. And not in the "we love anything that is next door to Cafe Brasil" kinda way, more like in the way we love perusing the shelves of this quirky book store and entering a world of the weird and unique. And in the fashion of the weird and unique, each Monday night Domy screens off-beat thrillers, cult classics,...

Monday Movie Nights @ Domy Books Presents: The Monster Squad Yeah, yeah, yeah. We're sick of the freaking rain, too. Rethinking that job offer in Seattle? Movie Screening @ Domy Books: Suburbia Join Domy Books tonight, in association with Mike the Flea, as they present the film Suburbia, "a new movie… about a new generation." Based on her observations of teen runaways, Penelope Spheeris wrote and directed this compelling tale about Evan Johnson (Bill Coyne), who finds refuge with a band of malcontents when household conflict and a sense of worthlessness overwhelm him. Through garage hopping, fights, concerts and death, the...

This week, we told you all about the upcoming opening of the much talked about Hotel ZaZa in the Museum District. Seems like the new hotel is on everyone's radar. Including New York Magazine. This week, the popular entertainment and culture magazine's website (www.nymag.com) featured Houston as their Weekend Escape Destination, describing a stay at the "highly theatrical" Hotel ZaZa as a way to earn some street cred in the Bayou City. The article...

Ah, the (triumphant?) return of Fun for a Hamilton. We could tell you a horror story about why your favorite ten dollar bill has been missing from your lives lately, but merely rest assured that Hamilton's back now.
