Rep. Ellen Cohen is all grown up and getting her legislation passed. The freshman Democrat from Houston proposed a bill that would add a $5 tax to strip club entry fees, and it passed in the Texas House yesterday in a 110-28 vote. The "sin tax" is expected to generate $87 million in revenue, $18 million of which will be used to fund women's crisis centers and sexual assault education. Strip club managers opposed the...

Houston politicians really are men and women of the people. Tonight, State Rep. Ellen Cohen will host a town hall meeting at Rice University to hear from her constituents about education in Texas. There will be two presentations, one by former Lt.-Gov. Bill Ratliff, of Raise Your Hand Texas, and a second by students from Lamar and Bellaire High Schools discussing tuition deregulation. After this, there will of course be time for comments and questions...

There's an interesting legislative battle brewing in Austin over the appropriateness of a tax that would go toward funding sexual assault prevention, response and counseling. No one would oppose a measure supporting that work, would they? Ah, you'd be surprised: There's opposition when the funding is tied to the adult entertainment industry. Houstonist stayed up half the night glued to our television just to bring you the latest election results, locally, state-wide, and nationally. Let's look at how things went down yesterday. This means good things for Houston's libraries, parks, police force, airports, etc. Mayor White is keeping the city moving, literally and figuratively. The Chronicle offers complete election results, but we're going to look at a...

Martha Wong, whose ideas are literally so bad that they get laughed down, is generating some more bad press for herself. First, she was getting busted for covering up the word "Republican" on her campaign signs, then she got busted touting programs she voted against (like children's healthcare), now she's in trouble for using HISD superintendent Abe Saavedra's name as an endorsement without his permission in on of her advertisements.

We here at Houstonist are practically apolitical, but we love Houston Rockets sportscaster Lisa Malosky. Therefore, in a completely bipartisan and apolitical way, we recommend all Lisa Malosky fans to check out the campaign kickoff for Ellen Cohen, where Lisa Malosky is going to be speaking.
