Found Magazine publishes the flotsam and jetsam literature: birthday cards, notes written on receipts, lost love letters, doodles, whatever happens to give a glimpse into other people's lives. The magazine has proved wildly popular and it tours all over the country, giving readings and events, while also collecting said flots/jetsam.
The Houston Museum of Natural Science couldn't have timed the opening of Frogs! A Chorus of Colors any better. With all the rain we've seen this week, it's almost as if Houston's frog population is coming to out lend support.
Metrorail service changes are at a minimum, but keep these in mind:
Few things are going down in Houston this week, but never fear! Our fair citizens are always capable of finding love (and subsequently missing it) in the mundane!
Found magazine is making a stop in Houston with the Cavalcade of Thrills Tour 2006. It's a 33-city tour with the masterminds behind the unique magazine introducing the Found II book, the second compilation of doodles, love notes, shopping lists and whatever else Davy and Peter Rothbart find. In a classic case of bad headline writing, KPRC brings us the story Drug Bust Worth More Than Pickup It Was Found In, about nearly $1 million worth of marijuana that was found in the back of a Ford pickup. The drug bust happened last night near Scarsdale and Beamer when a Harris County deputy pulled over the driver of the pickup and noticed he was acting nervous. Turns out the reason for the nervousness was 683 pounds of pot hidden in two air conditioner crates in the truck's bed.
Today, the Chronicle picks up on Animals Have Problems Too, a local online comic phenomenon from 24-year-old Sam Houston State grad student Zach VandeZande. His drawings — which, as you'd expect, are of animals with problems — are just doodles that VandeZande sketches, scans and computer colorizes. But his non-sequitur captions, which rarely have to do with the animals themselves, are the great part. For example, the Gecko That Uses Words He Doesn't Know the Meanings Of ("These tacos are so Kafka-esque!") and the Grey Fox That Can't Talk to His Friends About Rhetoric ("How was I supposed to know his dad died in a freak debate team accident?"). Um, maybe you have to see them to understand. They're funny.
Have you ever lost something and wondered where it went? If you happened to be at Texas A&M, it might have been sold to someone else in the school's biannual Lost-and-Found Auction, which was held yesterday. The event, sponsored by a campus service group, lets people bid on a variety of items found on campus, from electronics to sporting goods to clothes — even a foosball table. Sure, the stuff might not always have been what buyers were looking for, but one has to be pragmatic about these things:
