Big fans of Fearless Critic we are. And, we're big fans of free. Now the two have come together like PB&J, and we're preparing to enjoy it - milk optional.
Forget those aging multi-million dollar album-selling world-touring pop stars. Houstonist thinks you should support local music. Start tonight by heading to Continental Club to hear The Octanes play. They perform a genre of music that is unique to our part of the country — mixing Rock-a-billy with Gulf Coast Blues. They've opened for Wanda Jackson! And their bassist Nick Gaitan (also of Los Skarnales) is a five-time winner of the Houston Press Music Awards Best Bassist category. Best of all, the event is free, and there will be drink specials.
From Dylan Thomas to William Butler Yeats, from John Donne to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, if you're passionate about dead poets, you should head out to Taft Street Coffee tonight for the Dead Poets Slam. The free event will feature a poetry slam-style competition with a catch: all the poetry recited must have been written by a dead poet:
This is organized as a poetry slam, and competitors are encouraged to have two poems from their chosen dead poet ready. The audience will give scores and we'll discover who is the most slammin' of the deceased bards. And to further encourage you to give your best reading, there are even prizes! Of course, you don't have to participate in order to attend; an audience is needed, too. The Dead Poets Slam will get started at 8:00 p.m., but you'll need to be there at 7:30 p.m. to sign up. And forget about using E. E. Cummings "she being Brand"; that's our bag, and a surefire way to woo the ladies. Dead Poets Slam
ANYONE CAN PARTICIPATE; all you need to do is find TWO poems by a deceased poet and read them passionately on stage to compete for this best selection and best reading score.
Admission: Free!
Date and Time: December 30, 7:30 p.m.
Location: Taft Street Coffee, 2115 Taft Street
If you're anything like Houstonist, you can easily waste two hours of your life on the trailer show on HDNet, watching trailers from movies past and present and exclaiming to no one in particular, "Oh, The Departed. That was a really good movie!" You know the trailer show... Don't look at us like that.
We know it seems like Houstonist talks about the Menil an awful lot, but the plain truth is that we're damn proud to have a jewel like this in our city and you should be, too.
If the intricate and fiery artistry behind hand-blown glass always fascinated you, then you'll love the new exhibit at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. HCCC is currently hosting "Hot Glass, Cool Collections," a show in which some of Houston's finest glass art is on display:
Although there's no snow in the forecast this week, we're still experiencing some true Christmas weather today. And what better way to take advantage of that (while it lasts!) than heading down to Discovery Green and enjoying the ice rink on a chilly night beneath the glittering lights of downtown Houston?
If you're anything like Houstonist, you've put off the majority of your holiday shopping until the very last minute, which means that this weekend is nearly your last opportunity to get out there and get it done. After a long day spent fighting crowds and traffic, what could be better than relaxing with some great music and a glass of wine? Nothing, we tell you.
Gather up the family and your little ninjas-in-training and head down to Miller Outdoor Theatre on Friday and Saturday, September 26 & 27 at 7:30 pm for two nights of high energy Japanese drumming and dancing at the 12th Annual Houston Grand Taiko Festival.
If you're in the Washington Avenue area (or the Heights area, or Midtown, or Montrose...) and are still without power, we have good news courtesy of our friends at Catalan Food & Wine! The restaurant is very generously giving away what ice they have on hand tonight, after 10:00 p.m.
It's hard to believe that it's been ten years since Max Fischer got kicked out of Rushmore and "made a go of it" at Grover Cleveland High. But it has been ten years, so to celebrate, Discovery Green is presenting Screen on the Green - RUSHMORE 10TH CLASS REUNION! A free screening of this indie classic by Houstonian Wes Anderson at the Anheuser-Busch Stage and Fondren Performance Space, otherwise known as the hill.
If you're still mistakenly laboring under the impression that ballet is dry, dusty and boring, the Dominic Walsh Dance Theater would like the chance to persuade you otherwise.
What do you get when you cross the soul of a big band with the attitude of the P-Funk All-Stars? Big Sam's Funky Nation, of course!

We’ve got a busy week on the concert front. Our favorite duo from New York arrives at The Meridian tomorrow night. They Might Be Giants have been making quirky alt/pop songs for grown-ups over 20 years now, and a few albums for the kids that us grown-ups enjoy, too. Wilco’s Friday night show at Verizon Wireless Theater is sold out, but if you’re willing to pay a little, you can still get your hands on some tickets (believe us, it’s worth it). Finally, a great double-bill Monday night with Yo La Tengo opening for My Morning Jacket, also at Verizon. We're in concert heaven!
It's March now; the freakish weather is in full effect and your allergies are making you wish the spring was a figment of your imagination. What better way to celebrate than to go outside?
If you prefer 90’s music over today’s, there are a few shows this week that’ll be right up your alley. Tomorrow night, Matchbook Twenty and Alanis Morisette play a sold out show at Toyota Center (MuteMath opens). For rap fans, check out Too $hort at the Meridian Friday night and Snoop Dogg returns with new material at Warehouse Live Saturday night. Finally, Marilyn Manson gives you an alternative to Sunday night church this weekend.

Tonight, catch Grammy award-winning R&B vocalist, singer/songwriter Jill Scott at Verizon Wireless. Frequent visitor Bob Schneider makes his trip from Austin a little bit shorter tomorrow by playing at the Cypress Saloon in northwest Houston. Local faves Orange Is In is opening, which makes for a great double-bill. Another local act, The Mighty Orq, will be presenting a lot of new material at his CD release show at the Meridian Friday night (you’ll probably hear some new stuff from his opener Tody Castillo, too). Saturday night, be sure to catch a whole slew of local bands at the Free Press’ five year anniversary bash at Super Happy Fun Land.
